Nat 20s on three different dice!

That was a fun slot, and your spell usage made you MVP as far as I'm concerned. The way that last fight went down in an argument in favor spontaneous casting if I've ever seen one. What wizard would memorize 5 hungry pits?

Also, thanks for the shout out. I enjoyed playing with you, and would be more than happy to be seated with you again next year.

On the atrocious litany return...It is actually more like:

1d8+1d6(acid)+2d6(holy) +14 (x FOUR ATTACKS) (x double damage)
so more like (for 1 round):
8d8+24d6+112 (assuming they all hit..etc..but against ogres, they are all going to hit.)

Ok, but unless you are using 25 point buy or this guy has like a 7 con, those numbers are with Judgement, Bane, and Litany up... so this isn't happening before round 3 because they are all swift action activations. What where the ogres doing in the first 2 rounds? They can take cover or disarm the archer before he ramps everything up. Also, even if this does all go off, he has blown 2 of his 8 rounds of bane, 1 of his 3 judgements, and 1 of his 3 level 3 spells (assuming 16 wis). Also, with the double damage, he might have killed the one enemy that was affected by the litany in less than a full attack and not even gotten a full round of benefit out of that spell, especially if it isn't happening until the 3rd round of the combat (if there is still an undamaged enemy on the 3rd round, sounds like that's good for you giving them a challenge). Again, the full trick is limited to 3 rounds per day against 3 specific enemies and leaves him unable to use judgement in other combats that day and only 2 other rounds worth of bane damage.

And, by my back of the envelope math...
6 BAB + 6 Dex + 3 Enhancement (2 from bane) + 2 sacred (judgement) + 1 PBS -2 rapid shot -2deadly aim = +14... after TWO rounds of buffing with limited use abilities

He's looking at about +14 (two arrows) / +14 (one arrow)/ +9 (one arrow) with judgement, bane, deadly aim, rapid shot, and point blank shot in play, given the weapon you described and assuming 22 dex. If the ogres have cover, he is shooting against 21 AC... hardly automatic, but why waste that much power on a CR3... if they are hill giants with cover, then that is AC25... an even 50/50 to hit.

The rest of those combats he is +12 (2arrows) / +12 / +7 for 1d8+1d6+12.... not awful for a level 9 character, but not that good either.

The rest of the day he is +10 (2arrows) / +10 / +5 for 1d8+1d6+9.... frankly, that is not so great for a level 9 character.

I missed that BOTH litany and bane were swifts. But I think the rest of his numbers seem to stack.

They will stack, he just has to use bane a round before using the litany and pay 2 rounds worth of usage... and have the foresight to select the correct bane type for what he wants to shoot at the following round.

Obviously, without seeing the full character sheet, these are back of the envelop estimations, but the point remains. I think this character is pretty manageable from a GM standpoint. Good Luck.

I have a sorcerer in RoTRL. I think we have about 1 session remaining. I have gotten great mileage out of prismatic spray, although I have spell focus and greater spell focus to up the DC. It may not be the best choice mechanically, but it has unquestionably been fun, which is why we play in the first place.

He has saved up his money and before he left Magnimar he purchased a +1 Adaptive Corrosive Composite longbow (9400 gp)

Ok, but he is potentially pretty MAD... STR, DEX, CON, and WIS are all needed. I assume strength, since you mention an adaptable bow. I assume CON since he wants to live... if not, pummel his modest REF save (I know he has high dex, but clr1 inq7 is only 2 base) with fireballs, or a few goblin alchemist 5s as henchmen for the big fellas.

So, also, crappy BAB... at level 8, only 5 base attack (unless you are allowing house-ruled partial base attack/saves?)... no iterative or many shot until level 9. So, with only 5 BAB and a +1 enhancement bonus, not to mention -2 for rapid shot, -2 for deadly aim, and effectively -4 for frequent cover... it doesn't seem like you need to do very much to get your monster's AC high enough to put a dent in his damage. Large chain shirts are cheap and effective for an army of ogres and hill giants.

Kildaere wrote:
the archer will be doing about 50 - 70) in another level he will be doing about 140 round due to manyshot + iterative and he has taken a level of cleric to take advantage of Litany of Righteousness to burst for 1 round to around 280)

Ok, given the MAD discussed above, I'll generously assume he has 16 wisdom... even then, that's only 3 instances of Litany of Righteousness per day at 9th level... that only covers three enemies for the whole day. It is strong, but not all day strong. Add a few more enemies and that overkill spell will seem wasteful. If he tries to save it for the BBEG or casters... mirror image is your friend, and then he isn't outshining the rest of the party the rest of the day either.

Also, mind his action economy. Bane, Judgement, and Litany of X are all swift actions. It takes a couple of rounds to juice up. Also, he only has 7 rounds of bane per day... very limited at this point. Adding a little more fodder will make that resource feel less powerful.

You could also consider house-ruling the Litany of Righteousness to apply like a critical multiplier... not multiplying bonus dice, only base damage mod, and not doubling an entire critical hit, but just adding another +100%... effectively making the bow a x4 crit instead of x3 for crits against that enemy.

Lastly, you said you won't sunder... how about disarm? Picking that bow up is a move action that provokes. You can limit the full attack and bring a little extra hurt.

Good luck. Tell us how it goes.

I would use the Armor for Unusual Creatures table in the core rulebook, equipment chapter... non-humanoid column...

Can a spell cast from a scroll that otherwise fits the criteria.. like say, see invisibility, benefit from the ability of the ring of continuation?

It seems clear that spells triggered from wands and staves would not apply, since they are not cast at the time of activation, but merely triggered. However, as spell completion items, the activation involves completing the casting of the spell with the final verbal components and entails provoking an AoO as normal for spellcasting. Would this activity constitute casting to satisfy the wording of the ring and have it extend the duration?

The ring...
http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ultimateEquipment/ringsRodsStaves/rings. html#_ring-of-continuation

I just wanted to add a further reference on spell completion which reinforces the idea that spell completion involves finishing the spell cast (ie... casting the spell)... from the PRD:

Spell Completion: This is the activation method for scrolls. A scroll is a spell that is mostly finished. The preparation is done for the caster, so no preparation time is needed beforehand as with normal spellcasting. All that's left to do is perform the finishing parts of the spellcasting (the final gestures, words, and so on). To use a spell completion item safely, a character must be of high enough level in the right class to cast the spell already. If he can't already cast the spell, there's a chance he'll make a mistake. Activating a spell completion item is a standard action (or the spell's casting time, whichever is longer) and provokes attacks of opportunity exactly as casting a spell does.

4,000gp for a page of spell knowledge of a 2nd level spell... now you know and can cast a 2nd level spell.

Hello PFS,

...stuff...

Well, I don't know you, but it's obvious you are pretty dissatisfied with your PFS experiences so far. Perhaps telling my PFS tale as a sort of counter-example will give you a different perspective.

I've been playing PFS since last November. I had played other role-playing games off and on since 1986 or so. I played for 5 of the 8 years of LG, and the first 3 years of LFR. So, I was not a newbie to organized play.

In my time playing PFS, I have been to 4 conventions, 2 local, and 2 national. We have 3 stores in my area that run games. I regularly attend two of them, often playing twice a week.

I have 6 characters now at levels 16, 11, 7, 7, 3, and 1.

When I first started playing in my area, there was a lack of high level tables. There was a core of people here who had been playing since season 0 and had a number of characters stuck in the 7-9 range. I joined the campaign with a couple of friends from the LG days and we came on a regular basis, sticking with the same characters and that enabled the VC to start scheduling some 5-9s and then 7-11s. Some of the people in the core group were excited to be able to bring out their old characters who had been stuck, and we pushed a number through to retirement. All you really have to do is find 3 or 4 people who want to level up with you and show up regularly.

So, there are usually 3-4 tables each Wed and Fri night here in my town, and yes, most of the tables are 1-5, and always will be. However, 1 of the tables is a 5-9 or 7-11 when we need it, and I have not yet had a character get stuck.

Through GMing and mentoring of new players I've helped reduce the number of 10con melee characters around here. I've killed some and scared the crap out of others. Also, there are the times when other players have asked why my character isn't dead yet, so they get a vivid example of how buying a decent con score and a con belt can improve your survivability. Basically, not everyone is a natural tactical wargamer. Some have to be taught, and some don't care to learn. Most players do want to contribute to the table though, and can be taught to do the basic things like flank, not block charge paths, and buy enough con to not be paste after the first NPC drops a fireball.

The key is following the prime directive of PFS, "Don't be a jerk."

In my experience, when I display the right attitude, most less experienced, less tactical, or less in-character, players will approach me for advice in improving their own experience at the table. Similarly, when someone else displays a great character concept, table tent, painted mini, or mechanically interesting character, I can learn something from him/her.

Best wishes for your future PFS endeavors.

I think it would be nice to add a short section about the new inventory tracking sheet that explains a few things.

1. Is it mandatory (I assume so, and I like it, but might be nice to be 100% explicit on this point)

2. Detail a procedure for making existing PCs conform to it.

For example, is it OK to take everything that a PC currently has and list it on the sheet marking off used wand charges, etc... or must we go back to chronicle #1 for each PC and add items to the inventory tracking sheet as if we had been using it all along? Can any PF GM sign it, or does it have to be the GM at our next session after Aug 15?

I am thinking back to the 3.0 to 3.5 conversions in LG, and the switch from the first set of splat books to the Complete series of splat books, both of which prompted the LG campaign to do rebuilds and the introduction of the Magic Item Logsheets. Those transitions were handled pretty well.

I like this new sheet and think it is a great idea, but I suggest a definitive section on how to deploy it for existing characters.

I failed to buy a ticket when they were on sale, and I have heard that generic tickets will not be accepted for this event, so I am looking to purchase one.

If anyone bought one and isn't sure they can make it, or just wants to turn a little profit, I will pay $35 for it.

Reply here or PM please.

Apologies if this post is against any message board rules, I didn't notice a specific prohibition.

In marginally related news...

I'm looking for a ticket for the special. I'm refreshing the site looking for cancellations all through the day, but if anyone would like to make it easy on me by converting his or her ticket into $35, please send me a message.

Rather than a synopsis, just put at the very top under the scenario name something like 'A Pathfinder Society scenario set in The Worldwound' or something like that. Much like the old LG ARs.

+1 for this

Even just getting the primary location of the adventure in the title area would do wonders for helping us remember what happened.

Well, let me add my vote for GM audit.... but also, what are you guys fighting that he can hit? A minimum attack bonus for a decent melee character at level 7 should be around +12 if you ask me, and +15 is very doable. At +9 on his best attacks, he should be doing well to hit 50% of the time vs CR 7 - CR 10 monsters. Personally, I like to hit more than that =).
