Hi guys. Sorry I haven't been posting daily - things have gotten a little hairy for me since last week, and don't look like they're going to settle down until next week at the earliest. Until then I won't be able to check the game postings or post reliably - I can only beg forgiveness and ask that the GM run my character as an NPC until then. :(

Aziza takes a step forward and looses her crossbow at the nearest aberration, then tries to reload as quick as she can. "I've no energy left for slinging spells..." she grumbles to herself.

Aziza looks both disgruntled and frustrated after spending time trying to discern the nature of the magics behind the orange pool. Replying to Miri and Barek, she says "I may have to drag Master Quink or Father Zantus down here, since I can't make any sense of the thaumic energies underpinning this pool. There has to be a way of breaking the spells, but what they may be I've no idea as of yet." She pauses and looks at the spiky runes that cover the wall again. "I'm guessing that this is Thassilonian magic, and that makes it roughly ten thousand years old, so it's not really surprising I can't understand it..."

Just a reminder - Aziza does read and speak Thassilonian, if that makes any difference to her Linguistics roll

The gnome sorceress scuttles over to stand next to Barek, peering into the now dimly glowing pool from whence the aberrations spawned. "I think that quasit was summoning those things using this pool. I'm not trying to state the obvious, but the question is how does this pool allow that to happen, and how do we make sure it doesn't do it again?"

Aziza will cast detect magic and carefully examine the pool, the bodies or the quasit and the monsters, and the entire room. She will recast and keep examining the area for as long as it takes her to search the entire place. She will also be pondering the significance of the pool and the aberrations which seem to spawn from it.

Our characters walked into the Lamashtan 'cathedral' under Sandpoint on the 7th of September - almost a month later on the 6th of October we finally finish the fight with the quasit and her minions. %)

@ Doc Evil:
Sorry and hello. Busy day for me and I didn't get a chance to respond to your invite until right now. Will roll a healer and get it up on a profile page within the next hour... if it's not already too late.

Realising that her spells and rays will have a limited effect on the quasit even while it's unconscious, thanks to it's damage resistance and fast healing, Aziza instead moves towards the stairs on the other side of the cathedral to get herself closer to the fight. Once at the foot of the stairs, she raises the crossbow and - aim carefully - tries to impale the little demon with a cold-iron tipped bolt...

Dammit, it's resistant to magic! curses the little gnome to herself, wishing that she had tried to hit the hulking aberration attacking Barek after all. With that thought in mind, she flicks her hand forward once again, looking as though she's trying to shoo away a particularly vexatious fly, this time sending the actinic blue arc of electrical energy surging towards the red monster...

The gnome sorceress, seeing the monster rise out of the glowing pool, arcs a bolt of electrical energy at it. The bolt stikes the thing dead center and it emits a low moan, curls of smoke rising from the strikepoint on it's chest.

Doc, Aziza specifically aimed at the grappled quasit, not the new aberration which appeared. Please reread my last post. :)

Aziza cries out to the warriors who have been mucking about with the fountain when the new aberration emerges from it's glowing surface. "See? I said playing around with that stuff was a bad idea." Now that Barek has the little demon in his meaty grasp, she moves towards the dais, then takes one hand off her crossbow and flicks it towards the grappled quasit, sending a sizzling bolt of electrical energy towards it.

"Um... I'm not so sure that you should be dumping things into that pool. Messing around with evil fountains when we have no idea of how they work is NOT a good idea." yells Aziza at Barek and Thorn once she realizes what the two warriors have been doing. "Now put the dismembered body parts down and back away from the font of the Mother of Monsters slowly, like good boys, please?" She probably sounds a little hysterical thanks to being shaken by the quasit's scream of a few moments ago.

As to what Aziza has left in her bag of tricks? The answer is nil, zip, nada, zilch, nuthin' and not a whole lot.

She readies her crossbow to loose another bolt at the quasit once it reappears...

Frankly I have no idea what Aziza should do at the moment...

"If you were able to destroy us, you already would have, so don't bother with more stupid threats." says the gnome in response to the quasit's gibbering. "You're protecting this place, and I think you've been down here a very long time, long enough to go barking mad. If you want me to believe otherwise and convince us to leave you alone, then tell us who you are and who your master is! What was this place?" Aziza still has her crossbow ready to shoot at the little demon - her only option since she has exhausted her ability to cast spells for now - but she holds off loosing the bolt at the quasit, hoping that it may be desperate enough to reveal things about this dungeon...

Aziza fumbles with her scroll case and removes the parchment she purchased from the cathedral before entering these tunnels. Reading the spell aloud she then steps forward and touches Thorn, placing the protection from evil spell on the elven warrior.

Thorn got the spell rather than Tunder due to the fact that the elf has lower current hit points than the dwarf - they're both wounded, but I only had one scroll of protection from evil. Moral of the story is, if you want extra spells, buy the scrolls and give them to your friendly neighborhood sorceress...

Looking at Miri, she shrugs a little uncomfortably. "I don't like it much down here either, despite the fact that I'd love to find out more about who built the place and what it was for, but now that we're here let's finish what we started. I don't want to have to come back here a second time while it's still haunted with monsters..."

Pouting due to again being frustrated in trying to read the glowing runes before they fade into the wall, Aziza thinks for a few moments before replying to Thorn. "No, I've no good ideas as to what that writing or those howls are, your theories are as good as mine. The writing is obviously magical in nature, but if this place is as old as I think, the magic is fading along with the writing." She looks down at the stones of the floor, as if trying to peer below them and see what lies beneath. "As for those howls, they could be an illusion linked to the fading runes, some sort of alarm as you suggest. Or... it could be some creature trapped elsewhere in here, just like those vargouilles or that weird thing we killed earlier."

When the party reaches the room with the stern-looking statue, Aziza spends the time waiting for Miri to inspect the door by taking a closer look at the statue. As she's doing that, her gaze returns to the passageway through which they entered the dungeon, and another thought occurs to her. "Um, what about that other corridor we skipped by to get to this room? Shouldn't we check that out as well? I'd hate to have another monster of some kind sneak up behind us without warning. We could jam this door with some rubble or something, go check out that passageway, then once we know it's empty we can come back this way, maybe?"

"Seldon, perhaps you should see what can be done about Tunder's wounds before we go any farther? As I recall, vargouille bites can be very difficult to heal properly, even if the victim doesn't succumb to the poison." Even as she speaks, Aziza is very careful not to step anywhere near the remains of the two ugly heads now smashed on the floor of the fountain chamber. "We don't know what else is ahead, and it would be best to make sure that our warriors are fully fit, do you agree?"

@Seldon - I think you'll have to make a heal check to cure any of the wounds caused by a vargouille, but that's up to Doc Evil, of course. Even if Seldon doesn't want to use any CLW spells at the moment, he is still carrying the two CLW potions from the very first combat at the start of the AP.

"Well, I don't know about the construction of the dungeon itself, but the divine magic used to enchant that fountain looks to me to be ancient even by elven standards. Logically then the construction of these chambers must be even older, as whoever built and enchanted the fountain couldn't have put it in here before there was a dungeon to put it in, if you see what I mean." Aziza is glad that at least the elven warrior is showing some interest.

"I can't tell you exactly how old this place - or even this fountain - really is, but it certainly pre-dates the founding of Sandpoint, probably by at least several thousand years. In fact, I'm wondering if this dungeon is as ancient as the Old Light itself. If so these chambers were built by the Thassilonians about ten thousand years ago." The gnome sorceress looks a little awed by the thought. "But what they were for originally, and what purpose they have been used for since, and by whom - I've not the slightest idea at the moment."

Aziza mutters mostly to herself while the others busy themselves with the door to the east. "This dungeon couldn't have been here as long as that. Could it?" She looks up and realizes that no-one else is actually worried by the fountain at the moment, then shrugs her narrow shoulders before resuming her spot in front of Thorn, waiting for the rest of the party to start moving again.

Hearing Miri and Barek's comments about the fountain, but having been too far back to see the change herself, Aziza moves up to where Miri is peering into it's waters. "Hmm... so you say it just changed by itself from murky to clear? Let's have a look at this." The sorceress incants a cantrip under her breath and presses her fingers to her temples. "I don't actually have to look for magic with my fingers next to my eyes like this, but I think it makes me look sort of mystical, doesn't it?" she says to the Varisian as her gaze focuses on the fountain.

The little sorceress starts lecturing Seldon and Tunder on the reproduction of the horrible extra-planar monsters the party just slew. "Once so infected, the victim can only be cured by powerful divine healing magic, but the transformation into a new vargouille can also be slowed - temporarily - by exposure to sunlight."

As Thorn groans and begins to come back to his rightful senses, Aziza smiles and cocks her head at Tunder. As the Vargouille is destroyed by Seldon's arrow, Aziza pushes past him back towards the still paralyzed Thorn. Using her staff to reach up and gently poke him several times, she then mutters something and snaps her fingers, and the narrow corridor is filled with the acrid tang of smelling salts. "Oi! Meeting with no response from the still horror-stricken warrior, she looks around at the others then suddenly slaps her forehead in distress. "Tunder was bitten by one of those things. If I remember my lore correctly, we need to get him outside and into sunlight as quickly as possible if the vargouille kissed him too. It didn't kiss you, did it?" she asks the dwarf ranger.

Don't question it Seldon - that usually causes the luck to get embarrassed and leave the party early...

Seeing Tunder now grappling with the hideous flying skull, Aziza grabs the opportunity to step into the room behind Barek. Although she's now closer to the melee than she'd like, at least she can clearly see the vargouilles to target them. The sorceress incants a spell - "שטעלן פאַסערס צו טייטן!" - and sends a bolt of pure arcane force into the vargouille held by Tunder.

Damage, magic missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Arcane incantation:
"Set phasers to kill!" - no-one else knows what this mystic phrase originally meant either...

Aziza skips forward so that she can see the horrible things assailing her comrades - darting past Seldon to get close enough to be able to see one of the vargouilles clearly. But since Tunder, Miri and Barek are all engaged in combat with the beasts, she has to take care to avoid hitting anything but the vargouilles with her magics...

If Aziza can in fact see one of the vargs from the space indicated by the purple arrow on the map, she will throw an elemental ray at it. Unfortunately any closer than that and she will risk not only melee combat, but provoking attacks-of-opportunity if she tries casting spells or spell-like-abilities.

Ranged touch attack, elemental ray, into melee: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 4 = 3
Damage, elemental ray: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Ohhh! Second Darkness, so tempting... I'm gonna pop over and look at the recruitment thread.

On other news, I'll be away this weekend celebrating my wedding anniversary, so I won't be able to post until Sunday night. Feel free to act for Mirela in my absence.

Happy anniversary!

We'll let Miri deal with the vargouilles solo then, shall we? :)

Oh dear... dwarf on gnome dalliances. That's a mental image I really didn't want. :)

A calistrian/varisian dancer could be awesome but might step on Aziza's toes a bit (or not, I'm not sure!).

Um? What makes you think that would step on my toes? The character I submitted for consideration is a cleric of Shelyn, not a Calistrian or a Varisian, and besides which if Barek did make a Calistrian then Vris would be able to claim an association with him or her. It's all moot unless the Doc decides he wants to include me in yet another of his campaigns anyway; I don't take that for granted. :)

Hey, whatever floats your boat, Barek; it's your character, not mine. But if you want an opinion to help decide between many options that you like, then a Dwarven spellbreaker sounds like a good idea to me.

I saw the characters posted over in Second Darkness, just haven't had a chance to really tear into them. I figure Aziza/Rodan/Vris has about 3 more iterations before she's final anyway...

Yeah, guilty as charged, m'lud - I'm a compulsive tinkerer. But in my own defense, Aziza's progression is now firmly in the pure sorcery category, I'm pretty happy with Vris as is, and with Rodan I just screwed it up (sorry). :(
