Are we in Downtime activities mode? Or the calm before it (ie the time of selling stuff before we go into downtime)? I wouldn’t mind finding a sword instructor and buying a sword… gold makes XP cost cheaper. For that matter, a sword is Basic Melee or some other skill? Edit. It appears it’s basic melee skill… which ain’t cheap xp wise. Soooo, I’ll hold on instruction atm. Buying a sword and short bow wouldn’t hurt. **** Note: Short term ambition. Short term ambition: To make some serious money... magical education is expensive. Once we split up money it’s likely my character will see gold coins for the first time in his life, between that and the book that’s going to be used to pay for his education (assuming he doesn’t get gutted by the Grey Wizards and taken on as an apprentice), would that count as completion of this objective? In which case I’ll make a new one shortly.

Axel seems happy to wait on Lady Zarines pleasure. There was much to do… and he hoped that he would see some of that coin soon. He had much to do… much. Wealth was a tool, it merely provided clothes, food and shelter… and whatever else was needed. And he figured he would need a lot. A sword perhaps? The notion seemed appropriate, and definitely some tutorledge in its use. New clothing better suited to the hard life of wandering and adventuring, stationary and books… all very likely needed. He also considered that soon or later the Lady would somehow make introduction for him with an organisation that both scared and thrilled him. Witch hunters and imperial inquisitors had burned his grandfather teacher at the stake - would they similarly burn him if he failed to impress? On the other hand? They represented a doorway to relative safety and stability, and that he craved with an intense hunger. He knew Magda wanted to get formal recognition in her craft. He would love to see how she handled that so that he made fewer mistakes with whatever petition he would later have to make. He would be happy to support her and even silently accompany her when seeking her credentials.

Was that a mistake, or do you need them for some other reason? It was a mistake, I meant Grey. The secrecy I lived under most of my life seems to fit… they normally do not take apprentices so long in the tooth as Axel but hey, maybe for some reason I am an exception. The grey wind wizards travel, don’t accumulate wealth, and try to stay under the radar. The adventuring lifestyle would fit nicely. As we go along we will hit more chaos stuff… which grey wind wizards take great interest in. It keeps me a) in the party and b) hunting the plot elements of the story line I posted a link to the grey wind video for those who are curious about the lore.

we could have Axel be trained 'in the field' and the training wizard accompanies the group. I've already established something that is believed to be on the Earl of Harwich that the Colleges of Magic would be interested in (alchemical silver--a made-up MacGuffin to get the compass to work) and so they could be motivated that way. The training wizard wouldn't be working under Zarine, so we'd be introducing a shared-power dynamic to the party. This works best for me. Pbp moves very slowly and it’s taken me from start of game till now (nearly 4 years RL time) to get to this point - removing him ‘temporarily’ could be the last time we see him. Yes, it is a shared power dynamic… with an authority figure no less, that is as much a danger to the group as any other outsider. It also is potentially an unbalancing factor having a trained wizard along. Maybe have him crippled in someway and used as both subject matter expert (we could use more literacy) and double up as a trainer. Maybe both the college AND trading company see this as a net win… they can’t afford to send a full able bodied wizard but a broken wizard and a semi trained apprentice? Seems to vaguely equal a full one. Any assessment the college does do of Axel will show I have very good fundamentals, and just lack the formalities that make up the training of an Imperial wizard (IMPORTANT formalities to be sure) - so the broken, damaged, or very old wizard (ie not @100%) and a newbie is not so far fetched… to make up one “functional” wizard. Realistically there is A LOT that Axel has to learn beyond the scope of spell slinging. Imperial history and lore, literacy, politics, social etiquette/diplomacy, law and so on. The college of Wizardry is the power it is for reasons beyond the scope of magic, and in particular my preferred school of magic (Grey wind). Taking an unknown outsider apprentice, uncorrupted by college allegiances and politics might even be seen as a good thing by this college of magic in particular. Elf training could be a good stop gap but we still butt heads against a) My wanting some sort of status to use magic without being burned at the stake b) We would still need to take the character out of play later. Got a link here for my RP guide to Ulgu, the Grey wind. The college also hunts chaos as a secretive side mission… which I think suits the overall game (even though it’s taken us 4 years to get this far)

Ownership of the island… if you go to whatever authority covers that in full finery, well, it wouldn’t hurt. I dare say we will need to trade that book for tutureledge but let’s see how that goes… then I am gonna spend some xp (and some of whatever gold is deemed my share after the book) and look to upskill… that said I only have 40xp and need to get to 100 before I can read/write OR invest in proper and not petty magic. Long is the road of the wizard. As for the river wardens? Basics would likely be best… chaos cults tend to make authorities nervous and they might dig further… and find me if they start digging for additional voices, like our old crew.

As long as Zarine starts making enquires about any college of wizard representatives… and I’m hoping they coincidentally happen to be purple wind, at some point, I’m happy to help everyone deal with their individual projects first. I think Magda is best first in the hard light of day when surgeons etc might be more available

I have 50xp left. Spending 10 to buy 1 pt Lore Magic… I’ve seen enough and the Lady has read me enough that I have SOME inkling now. So 40xp in bank. Hopefully I will earn a bit leading up to the end of the year and be able to buy R/W sooner rather than later. I already have Polearms +5 thanks to spending that money for training earlier, so one less thing I need to worry about. Once I have that I will buy channeling (Grey Wind) and presumably will be an official apprentice then.

Probably need to do some supplies shopping as well. My clothes are basic and WERE neat. Probably need a slight upgrade and switch to grey coloured clothes, though that could probably wait until I am apprenticed. Downtime activity to actually SAVE money this time round (I played fast and loose without realising how dangerous that could have been in terms of not having a safety net beyond M’lady’s joint purse). That will happen after the sales. Spending some money on training might not be a bad idea for those who want to improve and have some XP to spare.

225xp to close out careerwith skills and attributes and another 100 to change careers and 100 more to new class. It would give me a few more skill and attributes. It would be 425xp. OR 300 to just jump now and still leave me 60xp in the bank to go to read write etc… OR I could throw money at it next downtime and pray the dice gods love me (that could get be pricey). It’s cheaper to jump out now… and cross fingers against earning some XP between now and my backside getting to that college. Once you confirm it’s okay I’ll update the character sheet with all the bits.

Aaaaand, reading further… Quote: If you have not completed your current Career, the change costs 100 XP. The time spent on this Endeavour represents making the appropriate introductions, doling out bribes, acquiring permits and licences, advertising, and similar activities. If this is the case, I can just skip for a 100xp. Leaving me enough for read write and another talent like arcane spell learning or aethric channeling… After thinking about a lifetime of hiding? The grey wind and stealth seems the most fitting.
Reiklander Male Fate 3 | Fortune 2 | Resilience 1 | Resolve 1 Wounds 19/(19) Rogue. Career: Witch/Hexer Moving to Apprentice Wizard
Apologies on the delay. Okay, let’s assume I spend 200xp to go wizards apprentice here if possible. BUT pg48… Quote:
So that’s 300xp… which I have BUT not enough XP left over for buying the read and write talent. Forgive me if I’m wrong, you don’t get a talent when you change to the new careeer, correct? Quote:
However, page 196… Quote:
Sooooo. It might be cheaper IF I complete my character minimum requirements, the career and class change could be free if the GM agrees. Let me know. I’ll do the math… which might leave me with enough xp to get the r/w talent. Calcs:
5 pts of attribute advances = 125. Gossip and stealth rural need 5 points of advance combined… = 50. Intimidation needs a full 5 points, so another 50.
Total 225. Leaves me 135xp. 100 for R/W and 35 in the bank… It can be done this way.

The young man is happy to feast on the fruits of the river pirates illgotten gains before moving on. The last week had been… well, restful. He was under no concern of being burned as a witch, and his Lady had been reading the books to him when she could. Thoughts and concepts that were scattered before are drawing together and somebody making sense, at least in abstract terms. He felt he was on the edge of seeing or understanding something that he should have grasped all along. And he felt hope. That book would serve, hopefully, as a way to get into training under a wizard someday soon, and without the need to sell himself into a lifetime of servitude because of crushing debt. By the gods, he could even read a few words. He’d never felt so blessed.

Given we aren’t on a schedule, I’m all for taking a week to help the villagers and bury pirate bodies… makes good fertiliser, and move the villagers from their dock locale to the better village. We might even want to think about bringing in 2-3 new families as “settlers” with the promise of a free house etc, but that’s big picture and probably should be discussed with the villagers before we go giving away land… after that we can flag down a ride. I’m all for taking the crappy flawed stuff to sell living the good stuff for the party and villagers. It won’t be worth much BUT coin is coin. Speaking of which, is anyone writing down the metric crap load of coins we found? Axel never has seen that many coins in the one place before

Assuming Zarine tells me what the books are That such a thing exists? This book is a treasure above all to one such as I who wishes to study the ’Mysteries’! I wish I could read! It’s so frustrating! He pauses and thinks. I don’t know how to put this M’lady. I have not the words so I will just speak the words in my heart. Such a treasure might buy my entry into one of the Empires magical academies, otherwise I hear the favours needed and funds needed are punishingly expensive and heavy to be bourne. I know the others also get a voice, and I respect such but…. When the time comes, could we trade that book for my training?

I’m hip deep in a work roster rework exercise for my local union so I’m not ready to do a re-write of goals etc… at this point. THAT SAID? I definitely want to do so SOON. Axel is starting to grow towards that goal he started with when this campaign kicked off whenever ago that was. With the books, and dresses? We are talking REAL wealth. This is one of the things I used to like about my early games of DnD. You find weird stuff as loot, and part of the fun was trying to work out just what the heck it was worth, who wanted it… and possibly who was looking for it in the first place :) Excellent stuff. Can’t wait for the xp and our landfall back at civilisation… It’s gonna cost 50 in advances for skills. Buuuut 125 for stats advances. Then it’s 100 to jump professions. Ooooor 200 to skip now. I have 60 in hand. Assuming RP ect goes my way? I foresee a career leap in my future.

Firstly, ignore my last comment. I thought it was for my other whfrp game. I’m either looking to Wizards apprentice or Witch pt 2, the sequel, that said? I really want to apprentice. Okay… this game? In a penny economy? 400 ain’t bad!! Very good as far as my poor arse is concerned… the noble may beg to differ :) Those books are a real boon and are likely worth gold. As a purely out of character aside, I’m hoping for ownership of the magic book… for no other reason than this would POSSIBLY get me entry to wizard training without punative fee’s, debts and favours as a trade. Less strings equals more narrative freedom. It’s just a pity I can’t actually read it. I figure at this point I need to calculate how much XP I need to prematurely exit vs how much I need to spend to meet required advances THEN exit. Not sure what to do with those locked chest. But let’s break that locked door open.

Axel breathes a sad sigh of relief in the aftermath. In a real way, despite not having used magic in the affair, he had seen it, albeit of a dark and vengeful sort. He would remember the power of necromancy until the day he died. He was saddened by the lack of other survivors. It was the futility of it all that drove him to nearly weep. They’d risked much, lost their earlier passage and still the only thing gained was the peace of those who were kept briefly from Morr. M’lady we still need a boat to stop by here for passage down river. And I’m afraid that will require money. Dare we search the now empty pirate camp in the light of day for some coin and such? I don’t really care that much for money but I believe we are going to need it… and maybe this small outpost will as well. A 50-50 split will help us both.
