Yeah. I'm calling time of death, folks. I'm sorry to see it go because this story had lots of fodder for good story and because you guys are terrific players.

Because he was sprinting ahead, Aurengil should be closer to the village than the others. However, he'd certainly stop and not enter the village without the others, so the map positions are okay with me.

A curious elven balance of calm prudence and rash impulsiveness define Aurengil's character, and now the elf explodes into motion, moving at an astonishing speed towards the halfling, calling for him to take heed of the dangers Aurengil knows lay ahead.

"Master halfling! Wait!" he hisses in a loud whisper, easily keeping pace with the diminutive escapee. "We mean you no harm! Petra was merely trying to warn you not to make a great noise because of the dangers that lay ahead! You have to stop running and talk to us!"

Aurengil chuckles when Petra calls someone "short stuff."

He then whispers his instructions to Calithil, launching the hawk back into the air, where it flies swiftly along the treetops, staying low to avoid detection and tries to get a look at what Aurengil suspects is a nearby battlefield.

Deng, I think you ought to consider the spell sanctuary. It's great for getting around the battlefield so you can cure people. Otherwise, you might consider bless.

As for feat, Selective Channeling. It's not just about Jon; it's also about not healing enemies and not all our enemies are going to be undead.

Jon, you're too low a level to really benefit from Improved Familiar. I recommend that you save it for 7th level. Craft Wondrous Item can wait for 3rd. I recommend Precise Shot, but the truth is I'm not clear on what class you are, so it's hard to make recommendations that will still be good in the future.

Aurengil's mind races through his options. His most powerful offensive spell is depleted and he is out of healing potions, having used his only one on Petra earlier in the day. He weighs the utility of a spell that never misses against one capable of doing slightly more damage. He makes his choice. Stepping forward, he conjures a pinhole-sized portal to the positive material plane, unleashing a focused beam of life energy at one of the zombies looming over Karmuk.

Aurengil leads the way, with Calathil high overhead, looking for trouble. As soon as they are out of earshot of the town, the elf speaks his mind.

"Those men are nothing but marauders. They don't want to form a defense; they want to live off the misery of the weak. We can't head back toward the lake until we're sure they're not following us. Sooner or later they'll find White Keep, but I'd rather it be later. Let's head toward Old Ghis for now and decide what to do when we're free of the dead."

Aurengil shouts an elvish war chant, hoping to attract as many of the dead to the gate as possible before using his spell.

When he judges that he's got as many within 15' as he's going to get, he unleashes a burning hands spell into the pack.

"That would be fine,"says Aurengil, hiding his suspicion. "But first we have a whole route planned through the area, looking for more stores. In two or three days time, we'll come back here before returning to the Keep. They can join us then."

Aurengil listens to the dwarf carefully. The inquisitor's intuition was usually reliable.

The elf reasons that Baeric and his people are bandits and likely ejected the villagers from Sunshine Crag. Having consumed all they had, the bandits are now looking for easy pickings. Like White Keep.

"The keep has many mouths to feed," he says. "Soldiers eat a lot of food. That's why we've come scavenging."

He hopes that talk of soldiers will convince Baeric and his men to look elsewhere.

"It's time to look for an exit," Aurengil whispers to Petra.

Aurengil readies himself to invoke deadly flames if provoked.

"We are alive. All of us. We bleed, eat and breathe just like you."

Seeing them staring at Jon, Aurengil continues to speak. "Relax. You are safe. His condition lets him sense the presence of undead creatures nearby. That is all."

Aurengil turns to Jon. "What did you learn?" he asks with quiet urgency.

Aurengil nods in response to Karmuk's suggestion, but keeps his eyes on Baeric. "Possibly. We are in their power for the moment," he whispers back. "Make no hasty moves. We need to learn more. But keep your axe ready."

Aurengil's thoughts run in parallel to Jon's. Why had Lord Lovthorn sent the team to this place if he could communicate so easily with birds? What was Baeric's connection to Lord Lovthorn?

"What was your plan, Baeric?" Aurengil asks. "What was so terrible the villagers chose the deadly road over the other option?"

Spell-like abilities involve some sort of concentration, as they provoke attacks of opportunity and take up a standard action, but they are not spells and so have no verbal, somatic, focus, or material components.

So it's evident that he is using such an ability, even though he is not speaking or waving his arms.

Aurengil bristles at the questioning of his friend. "Jon is a good man," he says, "And may be the key to our salvation. Somehow, his body found a way to stop what killed all those villager. If we can discover what, there may yet be hope for all of us. In any case, we have all lived with Jon for many months and as you see, we are quite healthy."

Aurengil helps the stronger party party members shut the gates, enclosing themselves in the killing ground. Then he looks back up at the men on the wall. "Will you now permit us entry?" he asks.

He has many questions about why the original inhabitants are outside and who it is that now rules this town, but he remains silent, eager to leave the dangerous position in which he finds himself.
