Ugh, another long delay. RL issues are progressing forward but I am not out of the woods yet, bear with me as my posting rate will rebound once skies are more clear. Thanks guys.

Haskin shakes his head, "If we ride hard south, we could maybe catch that caravan three days ride. If we follow these Goblins, the caravan could already be attacked by then.

The true question is, do we ride to the caravan and try to protect it or do we ride around it and trail it to look for where an ambush may come from?

We must decide and decide quickly, our window is closing as we stand here idle".

Loren:
He seems of full health. You vaguely remember a strange light emanating from near him during the combat but that may have been the effects of magic resulting from spells cast by Theo or Eldren. Certainly, this man has the correct name you are seeking and he is human!

"Aye, I am Haskin. I am the organizer of this group. Leader would be a stretch, we are a combination of concerned citizens and mercenaries looking to ensure that lawlessness does not spread.

Unfortunately, the city guard of Tarsis will not address these wrongs so we must take matters into our own hands. I'll let the group introduce themselves. Hop on, we've still hard riding south if we are to arrive in a timely manner".

Haskin shakes his head, "I am afraid Pilgrim that we head south and with some haste to turn back now would create far too long of a delay. There are others on the road we believe to be in danger.

Behind us we encountered no troubles and the city is but a few hours away by foot, you should reach there safely by nightfall. If you wish our protection, you will have to ride south with us, we could certainly use the help".

The two monks wave off the suggestion of a trip south,, "We are late already".

One turns to Lotani, "As you did not start this journey with us Brother, feel free to follow another path should you so choose. Majere sets our course north for Tarsis".

Gaurm's strike brings the Goblin right down as the worg continues to flee and Brogg cuts down the worg with a brutal strike.

Zsar's fire singes but does not slay one of the fleeing Goblins.

Haskin comes up in the rear at a trot. "Well met travelers. Tarsis is but a half day walk to the north.

I too am glad that my companions were here to aid you. With my spyglass I see they are headed to the east. Strange that these Goblins and Worgs are here at all. Generally these lands can be patrolled by human but rarely humanoid ones...

I wonder if there presence here has something to do with our goals out here".

The other Pilgrims nod their thanks as well, "Lotani, shall we continue?"

Lotani:
One of the mounted humans looks similar to the one you are seeking. Could be a coincidence.

Between the magic and the losses already sustained, I would think the Goblins would flee.

Plus with the long delay, I wanted to get the group a chance to RP with Lotani!

Brogg rushes forward farther now almost in striking distance!

From Eddie issues forth a burst of energy the Goblin is blasted off of his mount and hits the ground instantly dead.

Eldren & Theo Spellcraft DC 20:
That was unlike any spell either of you have seen. It's energy signature was... unique.

Theo's spell goes off striking the worg left under the Goblin that Eddie struck down. Theo Ranged Touch - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6. Unfortunately, the spell is wide of its intended target.

Eldren's spell is as effective as his words can make it, the Goblin rides off on his worg in a panic from the dancing lights.

Astinus' Study:

Gaurm's shield bash misses as the worg pulls back.

The Pilgrims pull closer as Lotani casts his spell.

The Goblins seeing that their quarry is no longer "easy pickings" and seeing one of their own dead while another fled, break ranks and also speed off!

Gaurm, Eddie, and Brogg may all take AoO's against the foes currently nearby them on the map!

OK thanks Eddie, with a long gap between updates I may have just missed your Round 1 action.

I'll likely be updating this thread again post Holidays. I am looking to next year to get back to heavy duty posting. It's not been a great few years, here's hoping next year will be! :-)

Theo casts a spell and a circle of grease appears beneath a group of the Goblins. Two of the three Worgs immediately slide onto their bellies (light blue & white) while one remains upright (purple).

The Goblins strike!

Three charge on their worgs at Gaurm and Eddie. The area around Gaurm appears to throw one of the worgs off balance, the others rider manages to slice at Gaurm cutting open his forearm with a dogslicer 4 damage. Eddie as well is struck by one of the worg riding Goblins 2 damage.

Three others move into position to keep the Pilgrims surrounded.

The last three fire their bows at the three Pilgrims. Whatever force was holding them back does so no longer! The arrows fly, though none find their mark.

Round 1

Brogg continues to rush forward as he is more lumbering than his "cousin".

The Pilgrims appear rather calm as you close in and their demeanor does not change much with your appearance.

The Goblins and their worgs farthest away try to fire arrows at the Pilgrims, all three appear frustrated and are curing in Goblin as they seem unable to let fly!

It is likely the Pilgrims are under Sanctuary spells but for how long can they last!?

Theo. you were 30' away at the end of last round. You can move now or simply cast a spell from your current location. Proceed with your action as it may effect what the Goblins are about to do.

While the Revered Daughter does not answer one way or another, as the rest of the group departs south so too does Draven follow them with her hesitantly behind.

The group though presses forward hard with Haskin in the lead driving the mounts down the road at lightning quick pace!

Everyone make a Ride check DC 10 to push your mount and keep up the pace Haskin is setting. You may take 10 so long as you don't have negative modifiers.

As the group thunders down the road, Gaurm is the first to spot trouble after several miles ride, Goblins, and a lot of them in the road ahead attacking a small group of pilgrims all wearing hoods. The pilgrims are outnumbered 4 to 1.

12 Goblins and 3 Pilgrims. The Goblins are all riding Worgs while the Pilgrims are on foot.

Focused as they are on surrounding the Pilgrims they have yet to notice your group riding towards them.

You are all just coming over a rise in the road and are 140' away. Your group has surprise.

Haskin shakes his head at Eddie, "I am saying we should either ride hard south to join the caravan or ride hard south and tail the caravan from afar.

I mean, it's kind of your idea my friend as it had not occurred to me before this... of course, you are also a much more potent band than the previous ones I hired out so I feel better about this trek. I've wasted good coin and found nothing but dirt and grass for months before this".

Eldren:
You'd bet that these Bandits have a Wizard with them, using magic to keep the group invisible.

Theo:
Hmmmm, magical horseshoes! That's how they leave no tracks!

Haskin shakes his head, "That's the confounding thing. It's never in the same place twice. For some time I thought the bandits were in yon woods" He points to the woods where Zsar initially arrived, "but there's no evidence of that. The survivors claim that they appear from nowhere! When they leave, there are no tracks. Yet they attack on horseback! I've tried to track them myself a time or two but there's nothing left to track. Mind you, the road leadig borth to south has no forests. A few rises to hide behind but no true impediments to vision as a guard while on the road".

Indeed, Eldren does opne the floodgates to several stories from Rin about magical forests moving. Despite Zsar's protests that these are indeed Ents, the Kender won't hear of it as Uncle Trapspringer would never lie!

"At first Brogg, yes that was my goal, now I worry less about my employers gold and more about where those weapons are going to!"

He looks slightly uncomfortable at the Revered Daughter's statement but makes no comment.

Haskin nods to Eddie, "Yes quite... hmmm. Damn. They must know somehow but how. Now that you mention it, they've never hit a shipment that did not contain contraband.

We don't need to find the bandits, we need to get to the next shipment!

It's on the trade road now, far south of here. At least four days ride away now".

Draven frowns, "Are you saying we need to ride to meet this shipment?"

Rin grins at Theo then looks at Eldren, "Uh what did he say Eldren? Did you know that sometimes Forests can just get up and move all on their own? I saw it once, I swear I did".

Red accompanies Aristal who refuses to let the would be assassin out of her sight despite Caleb's protests. A situation your group leaves behind as Haskin leads you all to the stables near the eastern gate.

The stable hand, Toby, greets him. His eyes are wide as he takes in the sight of Brogg and Gaurm. Even the appearance of the elves does not catch his eyes with the two larger than life warriors so near.

Haskin drops silver into the teen-aged boys' hand, mounts and motions to all of you to follow to the gate. A pony holds both Theo and Rin who of course, will not stop talking. The guards at the gate seem quite happy to see your group go. The eastern road runs for a half mile due east where it splits south, east and north.

Haskin turns to you all, "Now that we are outside of the city proper and away from potential spies we can speak freely. I have been employed by a select segment of merchants whose shipments have been targeted both by land and sea. However, the nature of what they sell is... sensitive. They are weapon manufacturers. Outside of the standing army and guards of the cities of the Kingdom of Kharolis, such goods are not supposed to be sold.

However, nobles with their own private armies and less savory characters seek to acquire such items and so the black market is rich with them. Or it was until their shipments began to be raided by sea and land by these Bandits.

As there is no discernible pattern to what shipments are attacked, it appears that such attacks are "random". Thus, the city guards of Tarsis believe that this is nothing more than "normal" banditry which while a problem, is not specific enough to assign a special force to pursue and stamp out. However, it is not random, all weapon shipments being sent to Tarsis are attacked and the weapons stolen.

The guards slain are those who are aware of the contraband. Those who survive the attacks are put to sleep and so long as they are not those with knowledge of the goods are simply robbed as is any currency being transported. So it appears that theft of the currency and nothing else is the goal.

The female cleric turns to Eddie, "The last time I let the guard handle it, two of my friends were murdered and it was declared that the case was closed.

Now two assassins, with a very similar set of strange magics, have attempted to slay myself or there elven dignitaries or both! This must be addressed by the clergy as well as the guard".

Red who is still lingering chimes in with his massive minotaur frame and voice, "If the Captain will allow me, I will attend to the assassin's questioning while the rest of you leave the city. Thereafter, as I wish to meet with the clerics anyway, I can report what I have heard back to all of you".

As Caleb and his men begin to lead the surviving assassin away, Huru, Draven, and another female cleric exit the Inn now teeming with guards, and approach.

The female cleric states, "Captain, I and my companions were the targets of this man and we would have involvement with his questioning".

Caleb sighs, "Revered Daughter Aristal, it is a criminal matter for the Guard to handle. If we need a Cleric we shall request one through the proper channels".

She shakes her head, "No, I insist!"

Haskin turns to the rest of you, "We are loisng daylight my friends, it's nearly 10 am as is. If your Cleric is not coming are the rest of you?"

Now you are all near enough each other and the NPCs to decide what to do next. Stya and interrogate, if the Guard let's you OR head out of the city to follow whatever lead Haskin claims he has regarding these "bandits".

Caleb listens to Eldren's and Theo's explanations and Gaurm's question and grunts, "We have no policy as such occurrences are exceedingly rare. For now, keep them as a token of the good faith of the city for your quick action.

If we have need to inspect these items further I will leave word with you at your temporary residence.

For now, we will take the assassin into custody and question him".

Zsar:
The potion is unlike anything you have ever smelled before. However, a heavy whiff of brimstone is prominent...

Haskin grins, "Good, we could use such weapon against what we'll be facing. Once Eddie exits the building I'd like to get going".

Draven nods to Huru, "I shall certainly do so, I wonder who the target was and why so we can start there".

Aristal peers out the window and turns to Huru and Draven, "We'd best follow Eddie. The city guard has the assassin and if we wish to question him we should be there to exert our influence, what little we have".

Unless anyone wishes to delay the reunion further, I am going to say you are all outside as the guard begins to lead the assassin away. Another contingent of guards is hovering in the area where the other died to keep people away. Still a third set of city guards are now posted on the stairs of the Cathedral. All told, there are 20+ present, not counting further guards who accompanied the emissaries from other lands. This was a bold assassination attempt indeed!

Draven gives a slight bow to Huru and turns to address Eddie in a gruff voice, "Thank for making the effort to come up here".

"The council will not break, even for this. Shall we question the last one or let the guards do so Revered Daughter? I can see arguments for either one making sense", states Aristal.

Eldren and Theo stare at the items as Gaurm collects them.

Eldren & Theo:
A shortbow, crossbow, short sword, and longsword all have magical properties (transmutation). Faint but magical. Two of the potions have a blue hue and have faint auras (conjuration). The third potion has a red hue and radiates strong magic (necromancy and evocation). Odd for a potion to be so potent!

Caleb opens his mouth and shuts it once more as the half-Ogre turns around with them already on his person. The guards take custody of the still living assassin from Brogg.

The Kender still stares at the spot where the assassin blew into several million pieces.

Haskin shrugs, "Come my friends, let's head out of town now before we lose too much of this day, collect your friends from upstairs and let's head out".

Red approaches having held back as the "fight" took place. "I think I will stay here. The Clerics must know the danger and to race off to find bandits when war looms is not the best use of my time".

Haskin frowns, "I am sorry to hear that".

Aristal places her hand on Huru's shoulder, "Revered Daughter Huru, I do not believe this was a coincidence".

Draven smiles at Huru, "I am glad you are unhurt Revered Daughter, it was your quick thinking as opposed to my blade that saved our lives. It seems I owe you two times now for saving me when I a supposed to be saving you..."

Eldren casts his spell and discovers much of interest. The 3 vials along with the dagger and a few items still in the bushes all glow with the tell take sign of magic.

Caleb nods to Eldren, "If they are magic, can you tell us what kind?"

Eldren:
I'll give more info when I get home on the specifics as I assume you will keep on concentrating on the items.

Eddie races upstairs to the top floor and finds Huru and Draven along with a human female he does not recognize all in the room. The woman is injured but casts a spell to heal her injuries. With the window and the door open, the smoke from the room is clearing out quickly.

Draven raises his blade at Eddie in challenge but only for a moment as he recognizes the man from the prior day.

Draven turns to Huru, "Revered Daughter, are you all right?" Huru is unhurt, her dive took her behind the bed in the room. However, a quarter of the room is filled in the gore that the assassin left behind...

Zsar finds a dagger and three potions in the man's belt. He also finds a coin pouch that appears to have a decent amount of coin within. In the bushes lies the man's weapon.

He glares at Zsar and up at Brogg, "They despise you, why would you help them!" He hisses.

The guards arrive right at that moment.

Haskin grabs Caleb's shoulder, "I bet this is connected!"

Caleb frowns, "More conspiracies? Once we question this one we'll soon see what this is all about. Men, secure the Inn, make sure no one goes in or out!"

At that the man clams up.

If the Cathedral across the way is aware of these events so close by cannot be known. The personal guards for each contingent who were on the stairs though move closer to the majestic front doors and draw weapons more on edge now than they were with the large crowd that had gathered earlier in the morning.

He struggles at bit and attempts to reach into his pocket once more but between his injuries and Brogg's overwhelming strength he gets nowhere fast.

The man laughs at the Cleric, "I would sooner die and take you with me!"

From his pocket he grabs a potion and begins to imbibe it. His body begins to shake and then explodes in a shower of gore!

Huru, Reflex saving throw or take [dice]2d6 damage, 1/2 from flying body parts bludgeon and 1/2 acidic energy.

Aristal takes injuries but not enough to slay her while Draven manages to dive out of the way.

Those rushing towards the building see the man dangling out of the window explode in a shower of gore to the horror of the citizens of Tarsis who have witnessed his spectacular death!

In the meantime, the one engulfed in branches is now engulfed in flames. He too attempts to reach into his pocket but has to fight the pain and the spell to get there...

Combat Over! The man is held fast by Zsar's spell for now at any rate. Actions? Eddie and Brogg, you can reach in and get the man in the bushes as he is unarmed having dropped his weapon in the fall, well, his visible weapon anyway.

The guards are even stunned by the manner of the climbing man's death allowing the heroes to act first.

Huru, you are unable to see anything but you are not entirely sure the Assassin has entered the room. It is clear though that your allies have seen the foes attacking your window as you believe that one of the half-Ogres called out - "Guards! Criminals at the Winged Victory!"

The Kender blinks and looks at Eddie, "More elves! How interesting we should go there!"

Gaurm's sling misses the mark by a wide margin.

One of the Assassins is trapped by Zsar's writhing bushes! The other clings to the side of the building.

The group is currently 50' away from the Winged Victory and the Assassin clings to the building approximately 35' up in the air on the side of the building.

The guards begin to stir to the threat but you all have reacted first.

Caleb looks up, "Yeah, no". He runs towards a cluster of guards shouting for them to look up.

Haskin looks up as well, "Well I'll be damned..."

The Wizards rush towards the building and begin to cast spells at the men.

The first of the men retains his grip on the building but yelps in surprise when a flash of flame shoots towards him and he spins away form the window.

The second falls into the now writing bushes below the window!

As the Revered Daughter suggests the window as an option the glass is shattered by an item thrown in!

Instantaneously, a thick billowing smoke, fog like, begins to rush forth from it.

Smokestick - Creates a Fog Cloud as per the spell, no save, all within have full concealment if more than 5' away.

However, the stick being thrown is followed by the sounds of two screams, one falling away from the widow and one that appears to be right outside the window!

Aristal sighs, "You did well Revered Daughter. Putting that door between us and them was swift thinking! Perhaps because we thwarted their surprise they have left? Still, I'd not like to open that door and find out..."

As the splinter groups return from having broken off, and Red announces his intentions to stay near the Cathedral before Eldren can introduce Rin her ears perk up.

"Hey, I think I hear someone shout assassins, weird thing to shout right! I mean who says that in the middle of a crowd".

Haskin and Caleb look at the Kender as if she has two heads, "What are you on about little one?" Asks Haskin.

As the Companions begin to look (it appears only the sharp eared Kender heard the cry for help with all teh street level noise) around they see on the roof of the Winged Victory Inn two cloaked figures climbing down towards a window...

Caleb snorts, "Haskin is pure mercenary through and through. We do stop the ones we can but these tales of pirates and Khans of the east are just that, tales! No one has ever seen them that can verify the stories except criminals of the city who seek rewards for what they know. Head out of the city and seek out a fight if that is your wish but all you'll find is grass and dirt as that's all we found".

Red frowns, "I've a mission to accomplish here, to want these cleric of light about the War, if this is a chase, I'll not take part in it. I'd rather stay here... Look there, Eddie and Theo exit the Cathedral!"

Indeed, Eddie and Theo even now head down the stairs.

Zsar remains quiet contemplating... he looks back and still sees Eldren though out of shouting distance speaking with the Kender as the crowds have thinned out somewhat from the welcoming ceremony at the cathedral and normal street traffic in this bustling part of the city returns to normal.

Haskin grunts, "Daylight is wasting, gather your fellows and I will show you the dangers the Guard and Soldiers have chosen to ignore".

Caleb shakes his head, "Yes, it's all one grand conspiracy... or maybe it's just bandits and pirates. Been around forever, we'll never fully stamp them out".

As you stand near the door watching you hear nothing from the hall. Then suddenly, the head of an axe pokes through the door!

Aristal casts a spell on Draven, "Branchala, heal this brave elven warrior!" the effect heals some of his wounds.

The axe head is removed and an arrow comes through the door, streaking at Aristal! At the same time, her spiritual weapon attacks the hole in the door. Both attacks miss their mark.

Kara's eyes go wide at the statement by Eddie, "True war..." she whispers. "You are right to tell me of this, while I cannot interrupt the ceremony, I will let the Revered Father know. I am sure that he will wish to speak with you and your friends at some point soon. I shall contact you when I know". She gives you a light kiss on the cheek and begins to walk both you ad Theo towards the doors.

As you and Draven exit the room with Revered Daughter Aristal a door fro down the hall is flung open causing you all to crouch awaiting some horrific attack. You are not disappointed as the hooded man stepping out aims a crossbow at your group.

From above another falls upon Draven, the man came through the ceiling! The sound of the ceiling breaking is muffled by some sort of magical silence.

As he dives at Draven, the elven warrior is able to twist out of the way and avoid the strike.

Undeterred, the assassin seeks to stab at Draven once more. This time, the assassin stabs into your elven protectors left arm.

Revered Daughter Aristal rushes back into the room, "Huru, to me!" It seems the silence cannot extend all the way into your room.

She casts a spell a magical short sword appears next to the assassin down the hall and strikes but misses the man's wildly. With nerves of steel his fires the bolt and it strikes Draven in the neck causing him to rock backwards if he cries out in pain you are unable to hear it. He begins to draw his blade....

Eddie distracts the guard by pointing to one of the friezes on the wall depicting Branchala as a Bard.

Eddie and Theo see Kara stiffens, "War what.." She stands, leans down to Remy's ear and heads in your direction, leaving Remy to turn his headed and look backwards.

He sees Eddie and scowls...

As she reaches you she speaks to the guard, "Greetings Holy Warrior, I shall take them from here".

"Are they supp..."

"Yes, yes they are", she replies.

He bows and begins to make his exit through the Cathedral.

She smiles but you can see a hint of anger behind it, "Nice to see you once more friends, why are you here? This may be the most important meeting among Clergy the world has ever known and you are causing me to miss it..."

The guard raises an eyebrow as the two of you whisper but he says nothing further as the speech by Father Dent begins to attract his attention.

Eddie give me a Bluff check DC 13 to distract the guard as he is already half distracted by the speech. Theo, give me a Stealth check DC 12 to reach Kara without attracting too much attention. Clergy and their Acolytes are moving about as are Guards so movement alone won't cause a ruckus.EDIT: OR the Message spell would do nicely!

Red sees Eldren rush into the crowd and stop, as the people move along he can see that the Wizard is speaking to, of all beings, a female kender!

Caleb grins, "You are by far one the most interesting people, if I can call you people, that I have ever met. One does not realize their own prejudices until they come face to face with them I suppose.

If you stick around and your words match your deeds perhaps you'll change some minds of people who would judge you on your appearance alone. And maybe from that..."

His voice trails off as from the crowds a man approaches your small group, it is Haskin Deacon. Deacon scowls at Caleb and addresses all of you, "Ah er.. fellows. I was under the impression we would be out of the city by now ranging for bandits".

Caleb's eyes narrow, "You looking to start trouble Haskin?"
