Skyler Malik wrote:
Haste is the best spell in the game

Why?

I certainly agree it's good, but the +1 AC/Ref/Att is negligible, and the extra move speed is only situationally useful (basically only when the enemy is more than 1 move away AND there's no charge lane). That leaves the extra attack, which only happens on a full-attack. That means it only benefits martials, and only once or twice per combat. That means the value of it depends on the result of one attack per martial per round being stronger than anything else I could have done with my first action.

How many new attacks does that spell have to produce to be more powerful than other things I could have spent my turn on? Say there's one martial in the party. That means that for every full-attack he makes, my action has been worth one attack from him. That means that my haste is really just a blasting spell that deals damage equal to the martial's damage-per-attack times the number of extra attacks I give him, minus his chance of missing. How many attacks do I need to generate before the damage becomes worth the slot and the action?

Silver Crusade

Re: Haste

It's definitely on my short-list. Thing is, there's this sort of circular phenomenon: you don't know who you'll be at a table with, so your haste's biggest benefit (the extra attack) could be helping as few as 1 PC. As a result, usually a wizard might prep 1 slot for when it looks like an especially good fight for it, and spontaneous casters don't learn it (except bards, who seem rare locally). And then the martials, since they have no guarantee they'll be sitting with a wizard, and even if they do they might get just 1 haste that day, they just go ahead and buy boots of speed. Which in turn means even less incentive for me to learn haste, which means more incentive for them to get the boots, etc. So where does that leave me?

Re: DDoor

Also on my short-list. :)

Hello! I just hit 8th level in PFS, so I need to pick my first 4th-level spell. And since I'm a human taking the alternate FCB, I also need to pick a 3rd-level spell. Bloodline is Elemental (Primal [electricity]) and my CHA is currently 26.

Going from memory on existing spells known:

3rd level
Protection from Energy (bloodline)
Lightning Bolt
Hold Person

2nd level
Scorching Ray (bloodline, electricity only)
Burst of Radiance
Blindness/Deafness
Glitterdust
Pilfering Hand
See Invisibility

1st level
Burning Hands (bloodline, electricity only)
Mage Armor
Shield
Magic Missile
Silent Image
Liberating Command
Vanish
????? (can't remember)

So I need a 3rd- and 4th-level spell. I see several juicy options, so I'm a bit indecisive. Also, since I'm hitting an even level, should I make a swap somewhere?

Silver Crusade 2/5

I wonder how I stack up as a 6th-level sorceress.

My melee attack bonus is currently +1, ranged is +4. Of course, I don't have Precise Shot, so those scorching shocking rays are usually just blank d20 rolls. Good thing I don't rely on them!

My main thing is spells, and right now my save DCs are 16 + spell level, or 19 for my highest-level (3rd) spells. Oh, except my only 3rd-level spell is lightning bolt and I have Spell Focus (evocation), so it's actually DC 20.

Let's see... at CR 8, a good save is +11, so they're succeeding on a 9 or better. That's kind of depressing, actually. :(

As for my own saves, my highest is Will at +6, against a primary save DC of 18, so I need a 12 to save. Man, I should have been an empyreal-blooded sorceress!

"Hero"? Hehe, that'd be a first for me! I joined up so I could travel the world and meet interesting people. Mom always said I was really talented and that I'd go far if I left home, and the Society seemed like a good way to make that happen. Turns out there's lots of messy situations in the world though, so I try to help out the best I can when someone's in trouble. But I don't think I'd say "hero".

At first Valais was a little scary, but the paladin said she wasn't evil. I thought back to what my friend Thomas told me about racism and judging people by appearances, and so I decided I'd give her the benefit of the doubt. Turns out she's had a really rough life, but I think she's managed to stay really sweet, all things considered. She just needs a friend! So I decided I'm going to take care of her.

I knew she'd get some looks from people when we brought her back out into the world, and I knew that would hurt her. Plus, Thomas says that if enough people treat you like you're already a monster, it makes it really hard not to become one, and I didn't want that to happen to my friend. So I walked next to her, in my best dress, and made it very clear to everyone that she was with me. I had to glare at a few people, but overall I think it went okay.

The healers at the Grand Lodge said it would take a while for her to recover from everything she's been through, so I'm letting her crash at my place for as long as she needs. I introduced my new roomie to Thomas, and he's totally sympathetic to her situation. He's even offered to help with the restorative magic at his own expense!

Someday, when she's feeling better and is a little more at peace, I'll help her find a new job and get back on her feet. I guess that means she'll eventually move out on her own; I'll be sad to have her leave, but it would probably be best for her and that's what's important to me.

But I'm getting ahead of myself! Right now, what matters is helping her get better. She's looking healthier each day, and she's really starting to brighten up a bit. She has such a beautiful laugh! She has some hard days sometimes, especially when people are mean to her when we go out. But it's getting better! Most of her face looks normal now, and the rest can be mostly hidden by her clothes. She's still a little scared to go out by herself, I can still see her confidence growing day by day.

I know she'll get all better someday. :)

Silver Crusade 2/5

@Keht:
Well if it were me, first I'd prefer not to be down and bleeding in the first place; that's scary! But if it happened... Well, I'd feel pretty icky about it afterwards, but they did just save my life. I don't like the idea of being saved by that spell instead of normal cures, but it sure beats dying!

As for using it on someone else, that's why I learned to use a wand of cure light wounds! Sure, it took some work to master it, but to me it's worth it. And if that ran out and I someone was bleeding out with nothing around to save them with but their own wand of icky healing, well... I guess I'd probably do it. But I'd try really really hard not to get into that situation, though!

Swap Burst of Radiance for Glitterdust.

Pfft, no way. 1d4/level untyped damage that doesn't get reduced on a save and can't accidentally damage my allies, in a long-range AoE, and that can blind people to boot? I think I'll keep that!

Quote:
And Haste is still one of the absolute best 3rd level spells. Unless you see yourself playing with that wizard often, you should definitely pick it up.

Dunno how often I'll play with him, but that wasn't the point: the point was that I was at a table where the haste wasn't that useful. Sometimes you're at a table with a bunch of casters and one martial. If that happens, then I more or less don't have any 3rd-level spells. Now, I might take it as my *second* 3rd-level spell, so I can use it when it's good and use something else when it's not. But as my only 3rd-level spell? Sorry, not reliable enough.

Silver Crusade

To all the "depending on party makeup" folks, this is for PFS. I don't know who I'll be teamed up with for any given session. As an example, my most recent scenario was alongside a wizard whose bonded object was a wand of haste. He used it every fight, and we got almost no value out of it because we only had a couple of martials and even they didn't get to do full-attacks very often.

I need something that doesn't depend as much on having the right kind of party.

Oh! Also, this being an even-numbered level, I can swap out an existing spell known. Any suggestions there, or should I keep what I have? Again, click my name to see my current list. Thanks!

Silver Crusade

Hello!
I just hit 6th level, and have a couple of decisions to make. I'm getting my first 3rd-level spell, and I'm also spending my human FCB on another 2nd-level spell.

I don't really know what I want to do with the 2nd-level spell. For the 3rd, I'm considering eventually having fly, lightning bolt (I get a damage bonus on electricity), dispel magic, maybe stinking cloud and/or slow, maybe haste. But I don't know what to pick *first*.

If you click my name you can see what I already have (also my stats). In case it makes a difference for people's suggestions, I'm a friendly-and-casual NG sort of character.

Thanks!

That's actually pretty close to how I start most adventures, gear-wise. I have some jewelry (some of it magical), a spell component pouch, and everything else is in a pathfinder pouch. Oh, and I keep a few coins in the actual mundane pouch, just in case I need to say "See? Just my coin purse is all!"

Meh, more interested in conditions/debuffing/control than direct damage, at least with my non-SR stuff. But yes, a very good spell. :)

Does anyone have/know of a list, or have some good individual suggestions?

Thanks!

The title of this thread seems like an apt description of what I'm going for. Well, except the "Sage" part.

I took the Elemental(Primal) bloodline for a damage boost on electricity spells, and my first two bloodline spells are automatically converted to that element. I also took Spell Focus and Varisian Tattoo for +1 DC and +1 CL on my evocations. That seems to be enough for "casual blasting".

As a human, I'm using my FCB for extra spells known on lower-level spells. So at my highest spell level, I've got something I'm cool with spamming, then at lower spell levels I have more options.

This is without all those drawbacks of being Crossblooded.

I'm only 5th level, but so far so good. :)

Silver Crusade

Ew, nasty. No thanks.

I'm not spending a spell known on meatshield hand-holding. If they can't do their job without help and I can't take down the enemies myself with my spells, that's when I'll be using silent image to cover my retreat and leaving Darwin to his work.

Silver Crusade

Hrm, I might take pilfering hand after all, if for no other reason than to give myself more time to think of other spells. ;)

I would recommend See Invisibility and then Darkvision.

I hope this helps

Wouldn't those be better as consumables? I already carry a potion of darkvision, and was about to buy a scroll of see invisibility (and I already have a scroll of glitterdust). I mean, we're talking a measly 150gp a pop here. That seems like a better deal than spending a spell known on see invis.

...doesn't it?

I'll probably end up taking either mirror image or blur at some point, but now seems a bit early. Those are spells meant to keep me alive long enough to let my big bad spells do their work, but first I need to pick up said big bad spells. ;)

Since I already have an AoE blind effect in burst of radiance, I'm planning to skip it and just carry scrolls for anti-invisibility.
And web... yeah, web is looking like an option. :)

Pilfering Hand (and later Chain of Perdition) is a solid choice, since it will work with the CL boost to evocation.

Like I said, taking that one is a given, I just wonder if I should take it later and pick up something a little less situational first.

Quote:
Blindness/Deafness is a good save-or-suck for second level, if you've got good DCs.

Like I said, I already have a blindness effect, so I'm not so sure about doubling up. And yes, I have good DCs. That would be why I pointed out my current CHA score.

Quote:
Or maybe False Life if you want more survivability.

Shouldn't I be learning offensive spells before I worry about buffs?

Silver Crusade

Hello all, I've just hit 5th level as a sorceress in PFS, and I'm not sure what new 2nd-level spell to learn. For context, here's a quick rundown of some key details:

CHA 23 (including headband)
Human
Wildblooded archetype, Elemental (Primal [Electricity]) bloodline
Spell Focus/Varisian Tattoo (Evocation)
Planning on Eldritch Heritage (Arcane) at 7th (using a bloodline feat to qualify)

Spells known as of 4th level:
Level 1:
Magic missile
Silent image
Protection from evil
Mage armor
Burning hands (bloodline, always deals electrical damage)

Level 2:
Burst of radiance (from Champions of Purity)

So now that I'm hitting 5th level, I get two 1st-level spells (one from the Spells Known chart, one from FCB), my 2nd-level bloodline spell (scorching ray, but electric), and one 2nd-level spell of my choice. I plan to spend all FCBs from here on out on spells known.

I'm having trouble deciding on my 2nd-level spell. I already have damage and blindness capability, so something a little different seems good. I've been thinking of pilfering hand (which I know I'll take at some point, I just don't know if I want a different spell first). I'm also wondering about web, pyrotechnics, and hideous laughter. Before you say it, I'm staying away from pit spells for thematic reasons (and because I'm a little tired of them).

So, suggestions/reasonings/arguments/cautions? Thanks!

Bonded items are generally bad because if you lose it you screw up your ability to cast spells. Weapons and other things that can disarmed are a particular weakness.

A familiar meanwhile can give you +4 initiative at the start and later on could be upgraded to something capable of activating buff wands so you save on your own actions.

I agree on the weapon, but that won't be an issue for me. And a staff, well, I wouldn't be able to half-price enchant it until 11th level, so it's not really worth getting. Everything else seems reasonably safe, especially since random NPCs wouldn't know what item was bonded.

Silver Crusade

Man, how come I never see PFS wizards with bonded wands? I can think of several 3rd-level spells (for example) that I'd be happy to pay ~5k for 50 charges of.

Silver Crusade

@Crosswind: I've never liked familiars, though a bonded object could be nice; an extra spell per day at my highest spell level, plus the ability to get a half-price ring or staff or whatever sounds fantastic. :D I might just go that route...

Silver Crusade

Hello, all! I'm playing a sorceress in PFS and just hit 3rd level. I'm not quite sure what feat to take. Here's some basic info, to get started:

Human Sorcerer 3
Bloodline: Elemental (Primal [electricity])
STR 07
DEX 12
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 10
CHA 20
Traits: Reactionary, World Traveler (diplomacy)
Feats: Toughness, Improved Initiative
1st-level Spells Known: silent image, sleep (to be swapped out at 4th), burning hands (bloodline spell; always deals electricity damage), mage armor (at least probably)

I'm going for something of a generalist; I picked the Primal bloodline largely because it doesn't force me into a specific niche and it boosts the viability of the handful of blasting spells I'd want to have on hand anyway.

So for my 3rd-level feat, I've had some folks recommend Spell Focus (evocation), to be followed at 5th with Varisian Tattoo. However, I get the feeling that this suggestions is born of an erroneous assumption that I'm trying to be a focused blaster, so I'm having trouble judging if that's a good idea for the generalist I'm trying to make. (Speaking of which, starting at 4th I'll be spending my FCBs on extra spells known, for extra versatility.)

I'm thinking of doing Spell Penetration at some point, and possibly Greater. I was also thinking maybe some basic metamagic, like maybe Silent and/or Still to cover potentially sticky situations later.

Any suggestions (that don't involve starting over with a new PC, or trashing my generalist goal) are appreciated. Thanks!
