Hey, guys. I wanted to apologize for dropping out last year without warning; things started to change at work, and I just didn't have time for RPG's for months. I thought I had remembered to tell you this, but I guess I was wrong. I'm glad to see that the campaign is still running, though; I had my doubts about the longevity of PbP's, but this group certainly proved capable of making it work.

Although ultimately unsurprised at his failure to halt a legion of demons through sheer will, during the skirmish, Argos couldn't quite suppress his disappointment; he shouldn't have expected anything to happen, given the dubious information that prompted his action, but Argos had a hard time accepting his seeming inability to help. The episode had brought painful, unresolved issues from the man's youth bubbling to the surface of his mind, taunting Argos with his own impotency in providing assistance in ways that were needed most. For a few gnawing moments, Argos had begun to slide down a path of self-resentment, but he eventually started to shake it off, considering himself foolish for giving such weight to events that transpired over half of a century ago. Despite his reassurance, though, Argos's distress had swelled to its highest intensity when the man observed Alyssa's suicidal decision to confront the infernal threat. Argos had wanted to stop her; every fiber of his insubstantial being had screamed for the writer to intervene, to throw himself into the young woman's way, but he could only stand motionless, paralyzed by the knowledge that his efforts would be as ineffectual as all of his other attempts at interacting with this strange world. He was thus greatly relieved when the Vulture King managed to stop the girl's course of action, Nevertheless, Argos's concerns were once again stoked when the warrior Zaidel was stricken down by the wrath of a wounded marilith, but the intensity of Argos's emotions were dampened by the sudden and quite distracting appearance of the Nameless Warrior in his full glory. The figure had left Argos feeling profoundly amazed and slightly insulted; whether his surroundings were a dream, some form of afterlife, or truly a different world, Argos had started developing suspicions that some higher power had taken morbid pleasure in designing the scenario that now played out before Argos's eyes. However, Argos's feelings soon began to lighten, as he quickly spotted a glimmer of hope in the whole situation; if he continued to encounter such oddly familiar happenings, maybe he could stumble upon some favorable encounters as well...maybe he would have a chance to see her again... By that point, Argos had no intention of parting ways with the party, thinking it convenient to accompany them to their common destination and feeling tethered by by his desire to see whether his predictions would turn out to be true. Furthermore, Argos recognized that he seemed to care enough for the group's well-being to attempt to defy all logic to aid them. Thus, Argos had rationalized, he might as well finish his commitment It was with such reasoning in mind that Argos had decided to once again shadow the others, placing a safe distance between himself and the others in case anything went wrong along the way.

Oof; looks like I've missed a fair bit of the campaign again. As Joseph made his second wish, Argos had little time to process its contents before he was swept away by the magic and transported to the presence of a trio of religious warriors. In watching the behavior of the three, Argos noted the woman's capriciousness and the familiar relationship between the men, which reminded Argos of that between his younger brother and his sibling's son, whose skull had nearly caved in following a blow by an irritable mule. However, Argos's analysis was interrupted by the appearance of three great fiends and their declaration of animosity toward the party. As battle ensued around him and the monstrous newcomers proved themselves able to shrug off attacks of the kind that had effortlessly felled the group's previous threats, an alarmed Argos racked his mind in search of a way for him to assist the defenders, but his plans were stymied either by the incorporeality he had discovered near the hydra's den, or by the absence of the sole person Argos thought to be able to hear him. On a whim, the writer's thoughts drifted to the concepts discussed in the court of Lady of the Wood. He didn't trust the faerie, but if her "prison" theory had even the slightest veracity, Argos doubted that his current state, alone, would warrant his incarceration. "Perhaps there's something hidden in this form of mine," he thought, quickly glancing at himself; "something that can put a stop to this assault." With this in mind, Argos began to focus intently on the attacking demons, half-heartedly trying to somehow activate some latent power to halt their offense. Using Wish as an SLA (DC 25 for any relevant effect) and modifying it with the Conceal Spell feat (DC 28 to see through the ruse; onlookers gain a +9 untyped bonus to this roll)

Sticking to his initial plan, Argos had shadowed the party during their travels. He had watched Kamii's paper avatar appear in search of an artifact, only to burn away when confronted with the might of Bage's flames. Sneaking into the fae court, he had heard the Lady's...creative explanation for the group's appearance in this world—the veracity of which Argos heavily doubted—and observed both the metamorphosis of Liriestil and the arrival of Kanzen—of whom Argos found himself strongly distrustful. Finally, as a fitting topper to the fantastic happenings in which Cherry found himself involved, a lumbering gang of monsters continually reduced Joseph to a mutilated corpse, only for the young man to regenerate himself after each blow. Although at first shocked by these Argos's distress diminished with each astounding occurrence, until, at last, he was surprised to find himself oddly comfortable with the world around himself. If nothing else, he felt mundane. Joyfully mundane. Now, more than ever, Argos was determined to find a concrete explanation for his presence in this realm. Maybe if I can find a settlement...one with an archive... he thought. However, he was reluctant to move just yet, as he noticed that his fellow "prisoners" seemed to attract dangers of every variety, and he didn't want to be caught off-guard when he attempted to depart. Thus, he lingered by the party's side, once more attempting to shield himself from their attention. Stealth: 1d20 + 58 ⇒ (16) + 58 = 74

Hey, guys. I am sorry for my absence over the past couple of weeks; I had to deal with a bit of family business that became more enveloping than I first thought. I'm busy working at the moment, but I should be able to catch up on what's happened and post in the gameplay thread in a couple of hours.

Oops; it looks like you're right about the dice, Lucas. I'll fix that. Stealth: 1d20 + 38 ⇒ (20) + 38 = 58 Argos is pulled away from his questioning by the abrupt death of the hydra and—more strikingly—the actions that killed it. Well...I'm stuck in a monster-ridden forest with a fairy, two shape-shifters, and a rifle maven. And I'm incorporeal. What kind of place is this? He then notices the sudden interest the rest of the group develops in the hydra's lair. Curious, Argos cautiously pushes through the trees and inches closer to the den, keeping his distance as he attempts to catch a glimpse of any future happenings in that area. Perception: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (6) + 19 = 25

Argos had followed the group into the woods, figuring that they might be able to lead him to the answers behind his appearance in this realm. To his discomfort, one member had earlier seemed to direct a question towards him; Argos wasn't proud that he withdrew himself and ignored her, but he wasn't yet sure that he could trust any of the others and he doubted that anyone else had noticed him, so he decided that his best course of action was to lay low, working to disguise his presence while he lurked behind. When the hydra appeared, Argos was overwhelmed by surprise and fear and instinctively leapt away from the beast, overshooting his movement and falling through the tree behind him. Shocked, Argos rights himself and quickly casts a glance about his body, noticing for the first time that the grass beneath himself is passing through his feet; How did I...what's happening? What am I? he asks himself, shaking almost imperceptibly in terror. [dice=Stealth]1d20 + 38[/hide]

"Please...not too late...survive!...the Seal...destroy ...can't die! The words ring through Cherry's head as he awakens amidst the commotion unfolding in the meadow, of which he seems oddly ignorant. ...Where am I? he ponders, trying to make sense of his surroundings as more thoughts rush through his head; A dream? It seems too vivid...Well, what did I do last night?...Could I be... Quickly sitting up and giving his head a brief shake in an attempt to suppress his last idea, Cherry becomes aware of the somewhat-deadened sounds of the others' argument, which quickly roar to life as Argos focuses his attention on the event. Figuring that he could glean some information about his current state from these figures, Cherry rises fully and moves toward the scene. "You, there. What's happening here?" he asks in a tinny, distant voice.

Hey, people. Sorry for not posting before now; I wasn't exactly able to maintain a reliable internet connection over the last few days, but that appears to be changing. I'm glad to be a part of this!

All right. Thinking about it, I don't want to stack too many abilities on a character that also has access to unlimited Wishes, and I've already given my submission the only ghost power I think would fit his backstory, so I'll just follow the advice of your first idea and choose only deathly delusions, which would make Argos's effective CR 3 (and, ignoring the Wish SLA, I'd say this isn't unrealistically low for a creature leveling in an NPC class without attacks or equipment). Thanks for your time!
Well, now that the bustle of the holidays has passed, I'm glad to say that I was able to (mostly) complete my submission's backstory, and that I will be active in this thread until recruitment closes (or longer, if my character is approved ;)). While I'm here, I'd like to go over a couple things I meant to mention earlier: -I don't really care whether we start together or apart, as I don't think the story's quality would suffer from either choice.
Also, I would like to mention that I find the prologue intriguing. I'm also a person who adores Greek mythology, so I'm quite interested in seeing how those elements will affect the way the campaign unfolds.
Hey, everyone. This is Pennate posting his character sheet for this campaign. I would have done this earlier, but I'm afraid that the holiday season is hitting me quite hard this year; another result of this delay if that I haven't had time to complete the character's backstory, but I think I'll be able to update this profile with the finished product over the next day or two. |
