Alaric is not opposed to taxes and wholeheartedly backs Kae's compromise. ;-)

Alaric approves of the name of Praxis. :-)

Some laws I've been working on. Hopefully the GM will give us some leeway with wording. Let me know what you think and also add your own.

Laws of Saravale:

The laws of Saravale are herein put forth.

First, there shall be no commission of, nor conspiracy to commit, the murder of another sentient being, except in instances where the killing is justified. Killings are justified in the following instances: When in the defense of oneself, ones family, or ones nation. This defense is put forth in instances where there is a clear and imminent threat to the life of oneself or family. In the case of defense of the nation killing is justified in the event of invasion, or in the prevention of greater loss of life.

Second, there shall be no violence done to one another except in defense of oneself, ones family, ones property, or ones nation.

Third, there shall be no theft or misappropriation of property belonging to another.

Fourth, Taxes, as set forth by the crown and council, shall be paid for the use and upkeep of common areas such as roads, docks, sanitation, and defense of the kingdom.

Fifth, there shall be no defacing of public or private property without the owners consent.

Sixth, all those brought up on charges have the right to counsel. If counsel cannot be afforded, the Crown will make every attempt to make arrangements suitable for those involved to appoint counsel for the accused. The arrangements can include reparations to be made at a later date as agreed upon by the parties involved.

Though I am definitely partial to Winterfell it is taken lol. I have a few ideas though.

Riftwalk Hold
Frostfell Keep
Winter Ridge Hold/Keep

As far as laws go are we writing out each and every one? We can write some of the basic ones and go from there using the resources that I put up and I can certainly come up with some myself. Maybe that is the best way to go about this is for everyone to think of some laws their characters would want implemented.

I really like Ry's idea of posting summaries on the discussion thread. I think that would help a ton and would allow people who miss a few days to catch up quickly without their eyes bleeding lol.

Please ignore for now:
This is for a concept I am working on that has some random die rolls needed within the concept. 1d100 ⇒ 861d100 ⇒ 91d100 ⇒ 36

Here are some resources for when the laws are put down.

Thank for all the birthday wishes. Welcome aboard Kolgrym!

Hey everyone. I just wanted to put up a quick post to let you all know that I'm going to need to take a break from the game for a few weeks. As some of you know I have been dealing with some pretty crazy stuff irl. As such I need to focus on that stuff for a while. I am not quitting and I love the game but I need to take care of this stuff in order to proceed. Dain knows more details if you want to know more. I will be reading and enjoying in the meantime. :-)

Just fyi although it doesnt really matter now but for the future, invisible creatures do not cast a shadow. You are correct though that the silent image wall would not block the light so I would give them another save to disbelieve it. They would not automatically know its not real. A silent image would also not cast a shadow unless it was included in the illusion (which it would be in almost every case where a shadow would be warranted because no illusionist worth his salt would make a mistake like that more than once lol)

There is some info on the discussion thread to look at concerning illusion spells and invisibility.

Alaric realizing that his friends are outside as well rushes back up the stairs after the bald man.

Saravale...and welcome! Love the avatar pic btw.

Alaric heads back down the stairs and looks through the wall. he is invisible for 2 more rds. What does he see?

They still need to make a save albeit at a +4

Yeah go Ry! :-)

The wall is at the bottom of the stairs. Everyone on the stairs can see it and everyone in the room can see it. Alaric would not be able to cast and maintain the illusion if he could not see it so everyone can see it. I placed it at the bottom of the stairs going from floor to ceiling as if the stairs suddenly ended at a wall. Sorry if there was confusion but both parties should be able to see the wall even though they can't see each other.

My Glaive has 5 hardness, and 10 hp, So the 9 damage reduced by hardness deals 4, and it has 6hp left.
But there was that nat 20 that you have yet to confirm (loath am I to tell you, but I'd like the same treatment, so I'll eat that bullet today)

Objects are immune to critical hits.

Don't forget to subtract 5 from the damage to the glaive for its hardness. And a two handed hafted weapon has 10 hp unless its masterwork and then its higher.

The wall is right at the bottom of the stairs so he should be able to see it (especially since I need line of sight in order to maintain the illusion and I wouldn't be able to maintain it if I cant see it.)

It still applies in the sense that you can't end your turn in an enemies space so they can't actually attack anyone beyond mak or kae.

Point of note: you can't end your charge in an enemies space. Quote from D20pfsrd "You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). You must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can't charge." So they can't actually attack me as the stairs are 10' wide and they don't have a clear path. They can only attack Kae and Mak.

Also this rule prevents them from charging anyone. "If you don't have line of sight to the opponent at the start of your turn, you can't charge that opponent." They didn't have line of sight at the start of their turn for both the fact that we were too far up the stairs for them to see us and there was an illusory wall blocking their line of sight.

Alaric Initiative1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Bron Initiative (I dont know his modifier)1d20 ⇒ 13

Ok slight change in plans then since I didn't get to move when the guy first saw me.

Alaric will move up the stairs saying the same thing he said before before stopping and casting an illusory wall of stone in front of the stairs. Silent Image

Now time for bed. If Waiph is still on take over for me please.

Alaric immediately heads up the stairs to his waiting friends and says while still invisible Trouble! Six men with the heads of jackals are coming and a spell user leader. Set for a charge. and he continues, stopping and turning back around behind the main fighters, Kae and Bron.

Alaric stops and holds everyone for a moment. He then quietly casts his spell and disappears. Alaric immediately descends the last couple of steps while invisible and looks at the chanting figures. He will look around for about 15 seconds before returning up the stairs to the group.

Cast Vanish

BTW, Sorry Waiph about before I got confused at which section of stairs we were on and such. Didn't mean to skip over what you said.

Also...WELCOME NEW PEEPS!

Alaric nods and moves forward and readies the spell. It lasts 4 rounds, if necessary on the last round he can cast it again if he needs to get back undetected. I'm heading to bed so if you need to npc me go ahead.

Alaric looks at the dwarf for a moment before saying Fair enough....and he promptly walks past the dwarf and heads down towards the chanting.

Stealth, Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 211d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Well let's be about it then. Once we get closer to the chanting I can go invisible and get a closer look. With that he motions whoever is in front to proceed.

Alaric looks at the group and says We go. I do not wish to give whomever is in here the time to prepare or escape.

Retconning a bit per a convo with Dain.

Alaric waited for the report from the advanced group with trepidation. This foe could potentially be a deadly one and as such had Alaric worried.
We should have heard something. I don't like this brother. We need to see what is going on. Henry. Ryul. Stay with Hobbs and the horses. Mak Morn if you would come with us it would be appreciated. The expertise of dwarves in caves could be very helpful. Anuk-su, please keep an eye on the group here from the sky and if anything happens inform those of us in the cave. With that Alaric heads off towards the cave entrance on foot.

Alaric, Bron, and Mak Morn should arrive at around this time in the conversation according to Dain. So we should arrive at you immediately following Kae's last post.

Dain I'd like to be as close as possible to wherever Kae, Ry, and Brett are. So you let us know where we can be and that's where we will be, heading to them.

*Smacks ring* Get back in yer hole! I said git!

Definitely didn't know that because Kae referred to us as if we were there a few posts back. I'd definitely like to be there. I didn't realize that you guys played it out on skype. I thought it was being done on the boards and nothing happened for a couple of hours until around 1am and I had gone to bed because there wasn't anything going on that I could see.

I thought we had come up with ry and kae.

Alaric looks back at his brother and whispers: It is definitely a possibility that a transformation is occurring. Any of those ideas are possible as a matter of fact. That is one of the great things, and in this case terrible things, about magic...anything is possible. Perhaps the best thing is to keep an open mind and see what we find.

Hi Heaven's Agent!

I'm Alaric and I am your resident ruler and sorcerer. What I would suggest if you want to go negative energy channeling is to take versatile channeller and channel both positive AND negative energy. That with selective channel could be an awesome combination.

Alaric smiles at Brett's threat to Hobbs to keep his mouth shut. It is good to have friends who care. Alaric muses.

Perhaps we should slowly move ourselves after the tracks while Anuk-su and Dior are looking from the skies.

Will be on sporadically tonight. If you need to npc me to move things if I haven't gone feel free. I am still working on finishing a 40 page background check for the police academy.

Alaric breathes the fresh clean air. It's been too long since they were on the road together.

Mr. Hobbs? Where from here?

cleric or oracle, definitely.

I think that may help Ry if there are some men like that available. Whatever we do it should probably be as soon as possible, I have no wish to see another hurt. Shall we adjourn and meet back in a few hours to head out? Of course Master Hobbs you will come with us, we shall need you to guide us to the exact spot. Alaric says smiling.

Alaric has been watching the back and forth, trying to get a handle on what actually happened. If you wouldn't mind Master Hobbs, could you start from the beginning and tell us again what you saw, leave nothing out, not matter how small every detail may matter. Alaric gives him an encouraging smile and motions for him to proceed.

Diplomacy1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35

Hell Yeah! 35!

Alaric looks at the others and says I'm with you also. We cannot let whatever this creature is kill our people. It needs to be put down.

BTW There is space for offices/apartments for everyone in the fortress. Let me know what you would like in them and I will add them to the maps.

I've already started working on a "real" village map based upon what we've been doing. I would like input on how everyone would like it to look though. So suggestions on things people would like to see, places they would like to live and so on just let me know and I will incorporate them.

It's a zip file you have to extract it. Right click the file that you downloaded and hit extract.

Alaric smiles as Bronwyn enters. The progress his adopted brother has shown over the past months has been extraordinary and Alaric could not be more proud of him.

Returning to the topic at hand Alaric adds If these creatures are susceptible to fire then I had better come as well. The fiery breath spell could be useful and we should have every advantage we can when we face these creatures. Perhaps Selendria might have or be willing to brew a potion such that we could breath under water. That would help to negate a large method of their attacks.

Alaric returns the stare without pause. Brett I didn't say you had to run to me for everything and if that is how you took it then I'd say you don't know me very well. Now I do ask that if you are heading off into a potentially dangerous situation you let me know. I didn't say you had to come to me yourself to ask permission but that at least send someone with word as to what is going on. As you say there is a lot to get done and if you, he looks at Ariarh at this or anyone else are going to go off into a dangerous situation such as exploring the swamp, then it needs to be known. As it is three members of the high council went in, which is fine, but when a third of our council is going off into a dangerous area, then the others should know. Alaric finishes in the same even tone that Brett spoke with but it is obvious that Brett's response to what Alaric thought was an easy request was not what he anticipated from the halfling and especially not the flat stares and even tone which spoke volumes.

Alaric returns his gaze to the room at large and says Now as to what we need to do now. That has been well laid out in terms of getting our buildings set. We need to set some patrols heading around the periphery of the village on the swamp side so as to keep an eye on any incursions. If anyone else has any ideas on things they would like to get accomplished let's hear them and see what we can do.

Alaric looks at Brett over steepled fingers as he goes through his report. When he is finished Alaric responds with a tense voice. Well it seems we have no choice then. Though I had hoped to be able to get the economy moving we cannot leave the people undefended from a potential undead hoard. So it looks like the plan should be getting our Town Hall set up, building a barracks, having Khrovin oversee the building of a shrine, and then we should make sure that we have a designated area for refuse.

He looks to the rest of the assembled group to see if they agree. If so then he will proceed to another question.

Alaric gets a somewhat stern look on his face before saying I am glad you were able to get this information Brett...however in the future I would appreciate it if someone at least sent word that you were heading out into potential danger. I only found out after seeing Ryul stabling Konur and asking where Kae was. Again, I am glad for the information about potential danger but as we move forward we need to make sure our communication is better. I heard that Billy took wounds. I'll have to make a stop over to the Banks's and tell him thanks for accompanying you.

Kae I'll second that then. Hopefully Drake and Selendria (if she accepts) can boost our Economy score.

So my vote is Kae's set up plus the shrine.

Waiph, I love the ideas and your set up looks really good. I had the -7 unrest up there just as a reminder for where we start. It'll be 0 when we actually get going.

As for the tenements in the fortress, those can be upgraded to houses if we need to for 2 BP each.

Also Dain, did you decide about the Jail? I put it in the map because you had put it in the email you sent to me. Are you putting that as a building we have or is it something we need to build and its kind of just there right now?

Also, the castle...Dain and I talked about putting it on the other side on the top across where the dam was and bridged to the rest of the fortress. What do you think?

Alaric smiles at the embrace, some of the tension that he has been carrying throughout the winter releases from his shoulders. Thank you Ry. I'm sorry for keeping you at arms length. he whispers back. Pulling back Alaric holds Ry by her arms and says I was foolish to hold back like this with you. I just didn't want anyone else to have to worry about me when there were much more important things to do. You are an incredible woman Ry and a true friend. I hope Khrovin understands just how amazingly lucky he is to have you. Alaric winks at her a bit before laughing My only real regret is that that letter didn't come two weeks earlier. But alas the fates conspired against me. Alaric smiles again at his joke before giving Ry another hug and saying. Thank you for pushing me Ry. You seem to know just when to do that with me.

About Pyry Lemminkäinen

Before you stands a slender young man. His porcelain skin is unblemished by the rigours of this fastfrozen faerie freehold. His eyes are the blue of the icebergs floating outside the harbor. Thick platinum tresses ensconced in a circlet of ivory set with three blue onyx frame his face and flow in waves past his shoulders to float in the slight arctic breeze. Billowing out from his spare frame, loose silken robes gleam so bright as to make the surrounding snow and ice appear dingy and gray. He speaks, and though his words are brief and without humor, you smile because the priest's sermons back home about the beauty of angelic choirs finally makes sense; and yet an ephemeral chill runs down your spine. Clasping your hand in greeting, his frigid grasp almost stings your skin. It is sometime later as you stand speaking with the other members of the party, the steam rising from their mouths into the cold air as they converse, you start in realization that his words did not effervesce, as if he lacked any warmth whatsoever.

Background:
Pyry knew he wasn’t supposed to be out amongst the trees at night. Grandmother told him not all were friendly, but he couldn’t help himself. For weeks the sounds had haunted his dreams. The past few nights the melodies came to him even while he was lying awake in bed.

His grandparents had chided Pyry for playing pranks. No one else heard it. Certainly there was no music. Even so, the refrains strained to penetrate the logs of the longhouse as Pyry lay shivering in the dark. He hated the cold and no matter how many logs were on the fire it was never warm. Winter in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings was nearly a year round season and poor Pyry dreamed… had used to dream, about far off lands basking under a sun that burned big and hot; not a wan light that never seemed to stretch its fiery fingers all the way to earth.

Well, as long as I’m going to be cold and miserable, I will find these minstrels in the night, thought Pyry. I am not afraid of old tales meant to frighten small children. I am nearly eight! I will show grandmother proof – I will bring back one of their instruments.

Pulling on his fur boots and grabbing up his heavy cloak, Pyry quietly slipped out into the cold, dark night. Once outside, the music seemed to reach out, veritably dragging him forward. He could see the notes as they skirled wildly through the air like flakes of snow blowing in the wind. So entranced by the call of the music, Pyry didn’t even notice his chattering teeth. All that mattered was finding the source of the melody floating on the breeze.

Flitting through the trees pursuing the dulcet tones of flutes and fiddles, Pyry nearly ran head long into the glade. Icicles sharp enough to pierce a heart hang down from the barren boughs of surrounding birch and elm. Snow blanketed the ground like a clean linen shroud and there in the clearing were his quarry.

A squat carpetbagger with a bulbous nose stood tapping his foot, fiddle tucked into his fat neck as he sawed a jig out of the cat’s gut. A small woman, all spindly limbs, held a drum in the crook of each elbow and another between her knees. Pyry couldn’t see how she managed it but all three drums were beating out a tempo. A sprightly old dodger, his halo of stark white hair flying around his head, sat on a stump playing a great set of pipes, their keening twining together the sounds of the other musicians into a complete harmony.

As amazing as the sight of this trio was, it was the two graceful figures dancing on the ice of the small pond in the center of the grove that drew his eye. They shone as if with an inner light, motes of light swirling around them as they swung around in each others arms. Elongated ears poked through their hair of fine gold and silver. Their skin was marble, no ruddy cheeks from their exposure.

Then suddenly a high clear note rang out. A voice so pure, so innocent; poured out a slow dirge in counterpoint to the gaiety of the music. There, apart from the others, was a young girl. She wore only a long shift of gossamer thread that glimmered in the light of the low moon. She was the fount of his longing. The sorrow of her heart bore through the lively notes of her accompaniment which somehow accentuated the tale of star-crossed lovers. It was high, resonating notes of her song that he had seen on the wind.

He didn’t know how long ago the music stopped. He missed when all of them turned to regard him with curiosity. He didn’t even realize the ballad had died on her lips. He started when the silence became too loud to be ignored. They all smiled at his discomfiture. The young girl strode towards him and reached out her hand. Pyry didn’t remember taking any steps yet there was his hand, firmly nestled in hers. He looked up to see a smile that reached all the way to eyes the color of storm clouds set above high cheekbones on an angular face framed by curls of spun silver so white as to almost have hints of blue.

They danced. For hours, for days; they danced. She had grown, leaving the light girl behind, however; she never lost her blush of youth. Pyry remembered how they had looked eye-to-eye that first time they turned across the ice. Now she would look up to him whenever they waltzed. The trio still played, the lovers still danced. Sometimes, when the steps demanded, they would switch partners. Other times, their dance was for them alone. She sang as she danced, songs of love and light; the dirge long forgotten.

They danced into a clearing. The musicians stopped playing. The other dancers stopped dancing. Pyry only noticed when her eyes went wide, her mouth forming a small ‘o”. Turning, he noticed a new couple had joined them. They, too, were tall, slender of frame and lithe in movement. They shared features with the lord and lady of dance. Whereas the dancers had angular faces warmed by smiles and eyes twinkling with merriment, the newcomers’ coldly beautiful angles were sharp, eyes brittle with frost.

The original dancers bowed deeply to their newly arrived counterparts. The bows were returned, albeit stiffly. Pyry felt her latch onto his arms. He looked to her and saw tears welling up in her eyes. Frowning, he shook his head, confusion sown onto his face. His companions in dance stepped forward, gently taking her out of his arms and into their own. He felt new hands close upon him as those recently arrived turned him away from the clearing and onto a path leading through the forest. He managed to look back only once to see her reaching out to him as the dancers encouraged her to return to the reel.

Months have passed. His grandparents, so they have claimed to be, do not pay him much attention anymore. At first it had amused them to play him off against each other by revealing tidbits about his past and parentage. They called him a bastard, son to one of their countless offspring who had run off with a Viking from the Land of the Linnorm Kings. They told him how the fae were still beholden to their line and had been geased to find him and return him home. Over time he had come to learn that he was a mere pawn in their successive fête champêtre and refused to play. They then just used him for petty amusements until something new caught their attention.

It is deepest winter here. He no longer feels the cold on his skin. He had thought there to be no warmth left in him. Of late, he has been haunted by a soulful melody blowing faint on the wind. It invades his nightmares and pervades the daymare that is his life. Making the mistake of telling this to his grandparents, they have been conjuring ghost sounds and singing at all hours. Still, the lamentation has been steadily increasing in pitch and volume. It is again a starry night when he can no longer stand the sound. He races up to the highest parapet screaming out into the night for release. Release from the torments of these hateful gaolers, freedom from the anguish of his torn and bleeding heart.

His grandmother takes petty delight in mocking him for his outburst last night. Pyry walks out of the castle and into the trees. He remembers them calling this the Hoarwood. He wanders aimlessly through the forest.

From a trail he steps into a glen. There is a pool in its center. Oddly, there is no ice covering the water. He sees a glimmer of light upon the water. Moving closer he notes a silver and white film which resolves itself into the form of a body floating on the water. Pyry rushes into the pool grasping at the figure and dragging it to shore. He pushes aside hair, fine and white, from the face to reveal his lover. Her countenance is one of heartbreak. The water trails down her eyes as if she were still crying before freezing on her cheeks. Protruding from her breast is a small dagger.

His heart drops from his chest as the memories of the past weeks come rushing back. The strange song whispered on the wind, the relentless pull on his soul through his sleep into his waking hours; the pain that lodged in his heart every time he heard the music. She had been calling him out, singing her sorrow at her loss to draw him back to her. His cry into the night for surcease had been heard. She heard it as his refusal to rejoin her. Her heart broken, she had sought to finish what his words began.

Pyry sobbed over her cold body. He cried out once more, screaming the words that he held in his own dying heart. His words took shape, the chill in his spine reflecting into the world around him, freezing the water of the pool. Sparks of light arc away from him as he pours out his soul to her deaf ears.

The refrain stirs him. He lifts up his head to see the dancers spinning upon the ice. The band plays on. He calls out to them and they stop their reeling with twin looks of surprise. Imploring them to help, he holds up her cold body. They step forward, taking her into the arms once more, with reproachful looks. He pulls the dagger from her heart, laying it at Pyry’s feet. He begs them to return her to him. They sadly shake their heads, turning away to return to the dance. Swinging her in their arms as they dance, the reel continues; all the while the band plays on.

They are gone. Pyry picks up the knife, her blood frozen upon the blade. He rips a strip from his clothing tying it to the tiny dagger and placES it around his neck. The cold of the iron stings his skin.
