Aki tries to cast another shocking grasp.
But she has to dodge aside as the creature starts to turn. Swiftly she slashes at the air with her blade and then jumps forward... ...landing thirty feet away, in the cave, after which she darts a bit further back in. "Get away from here!" she shouts to the others. "I can distract it and then escape!"
The lack of a frontline character hurts, but we probably could have done a lot better in this fight if we'd been able to hold the range open instead of immediately getting into a melee. Ah, well. Hindsight and all that.
As soon as the entangling plant growth vanishes, Aki darts forwards, hoping the lobster is too busy with Nathan to strike her. She chants a quick spell and reaches out with an electrically-charged hand.
"Get rid of those vines!" Aki shouts, hoping it was one of them and not something else in the area. "They're doing more harm than good!"
Aki says something very unladylike in Tien as she tries to break out of the entangling vines.
She manages to slip out and hastily backs out of the area of grasping greenery.
Aki casts mage armor on herself and steps to one side, hoping to lure the creature out to where it can be flanked.
Aki darts back out of the cave, yipping a warning. Once outside she shifts back to her true form. "There's a giant lobster in there," she says, drawing Yin and turning back towards the cave entrance.
"Remember, I'll be looking ahead," Aki says before shifting into fox form. She slowly creeps up to the cave entrance and looks around, doing her best to stay hidden.
"We were heading for the cave, which is near the volcano," Aki reminds everyone.

Aki frowns slightly and cocks her head to one side. "It may simply be a beast native to the jungle. Still, it wouldn't hurt to look it over on the off chance there's something odd on it."
Aki steps back now that it's entangled, allowing those with better ranged attacks to finish it off.
Aki backs up slightly and chants an incantation. She thrusts her hands out in front of her, and flames shoot from them, fanning over the creature.
"I think we can tell pretty easily that we need to stay away from those claws!" Aki exclaims. She moves to the side and casts mage armor on herself, watching for an opening.
Aki will take first or last, depending on which is needed.
Aki frowns slightly. "I could scout it out. Carefully."
Aki hangs back, close enough to overhear but out of sight for the moment.
It just seems unlikely that doing that would be *easier* than taking on a single shaman.
Yeah, I feel like fighting against these cannibals has become our main goal. We've thrown some ideas out there--what would be good now is some indications as to what might or might not be possible. For example, it sounds like we're leaning towards trying to ambush, capture, and interrogate one of their shaman. How possible would that be?
Aki shakes her head slightly. "I might be able to snoop around in fox form, but without understanding their language it wouldn't be much help. There's no way the whole group of us would go unseen. An ambush would seem a better approach, if we could arrange one."
Aki barks a short laugh of disbelief. "Without any idea of how dangerous it is? What if steel doesn't penetrate its hide? What if, say, fire doesn't work on it?" She shakes her head. "Before we can plan, we need information. Information..." She frowns slightly. "...information that can probably only be acquired from their shaman. Capturing and interrogating one may be a necessary step."
Aki tries to swim around the thrashing eel, but catches a wave in the face, breathing in water and leaving her choking and sputtering.
Aki watches the eel carefully, ready to strike when it returns.
None of her spells would be particularly wise to use at present, and so Aki tries to swim over while drawing Yang, then stab at the eel.
Aki follows the others, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious.
"I'd rather we took a look around the shore for a bit before swimming," Aki comments drily, though she makes certain to ward herself, as well.
Aki nods. "We should spend time building our strength and bleeding theirs, yes."
"Or at least the bridge," Aki suggests. "Depending on how it is constructed, of course."
Once she's feeling more comfortable with the language and more familiar with the jungle, Aki suggests to the others that they speak with the Grippli about how to stirke at the Gengar.
Aki proves to be a ready student of the grippli tongue, picking it up with an ease that borders on supernatural. Before long she is speaking with their hosts, if not fluently, then at least comfortably. She has more trouble learning the ways of the jungle, but through dogged persistence she becomes at least somewhat competant in finding her way around and hunting. Perhaps most importantly, she manages to find something to use as an ink to add new spells to her spellbook.
Aki gives Garounda another bow. "My thanks, Garounda. I would learn your tongue, if there are those patient enough to teach me."
Hmmm, spells... I'm actually still stuck with 1st-level spells, due to my multi-classing (I'm planning on going straight Arcanist from here out, though, so I'll catch up mostly). I'll have to think it over...
As soon as Pharithstilis translates, Aki snarls. "We do not. Many of us here killed those who would enslave other thinking beings. To eat them is an even worse evil."
Aki gives the grippli leader an elegant bow. "I am Aki," she says.
Aki gives them a polite bow, hoping that will translate better then words, then follows the others up the ladder.
Aki carefully gets to her feet. "I'm willing to give it the chance," she says, watching it warily.
Aki looks at the others. "I suppose we should keep our same watch schedule," she says.
Aki gives them a bow, then follows the one leading them away. As she does, she comments to the others, "Perhaps there is to be a cost for their generosity."
Aki looks around and, guessing at a direction, gives the jungle a deep bow. "Thank you," she says aloud. She does, however, wait for Pharithstilis and Echo to confirm that there's no magic in the area before partaking of the gifts.
"I'm voting we give that creature a lot of space and go around it," Aki quietly says, watching it warily.
Aki keeps a wary eye out as she follows Echo's lead.
"A pity we can't speak with them," Aki notes. She's again in human form--it's just more comfortable for tromping through the jungle. "They might be willing to help us if we could communicate."
Figuring she's seen about all she's going to see, Aki slips around the Grippli and rejoins the group. A fox steps out of the forest and shifts into the form of a familiar Tien woman. "We'd better be on our best behavior," she says as she walks over to the others. "There are still a couple of those grippli watching."
Aki trails the grippli trailing the group for now.
Aki stays in fox form and keeps watching until the rest of the group leaves.
