background:

Ahiko Mitsuhara was born in Kasai, the capital of Minkai. Her father, Masa, a samurai bound to the imperial household; her mother, Naniko, a proud and vain woman. Ahiko grew up with her siblings in a quite ordinary way, though her nature was immediately known at birth, her parents accepted her, though they kept her something of a secret. It was easy to do so in the insular society of Kasai.

When the Emperor was sent away 'for his own protection', and rule of Minkai was taken over by the Jade Regent, Masa was one of his many followers who protested the change, not being in the thrall of the Regent himself. He lost his position in the Imperial household and the family found themselves bereft of income and position. The family moved from their own ancestral home in Kasai to a small holding in the mountains where they lived frugally. Naniko, Ahiko's mother, was devastated by the change, and her health soon failed her. She died when Ahiko was five, leaving Masa to raise his children alone.

Ahiko grew a bit wild up in the mountain stronghold and when she was 18, she left the family home and set out with her brother Sho to see the world. Sho, like their father, was an accomplished warrior already when they set out, and proved to be a good defender to the relatively defenseless Ahiko. Together they made a good team, the healer and the warrior. But nothing lasts forever.

During their travels throughout Minkai, Sho met a young woman, daughter of a sword-smith, and fell in love. He found ways of always needing to come back to see Umie, and finally, in the absence of his own father to arrange a marriage for him, he asked her directly and she agreed, with her father's permission. They begged Ahiko to stay and live with them, which she did. But she wasn't really happy staying in one place, having developed a love of travel.

Not far from their new home, Ahiko discovered there was a shrine to Tsukiyo, who she revered above other gods. She made several short pilgrimages to the shrine and this visit was no different from the others. Ahiko spent two days in deep, devoted meditation. When she was ready to leave, she stopped to leave a small offering of jade and flowers at the base of the torii on the grounds of the shrine. Rather than go around the torii, she passed through it on the way out. She had no idea that her offering and mediations had activated the gate and the world shimmered and 'went away'.

When she woke up, she found herself in a field, lying among flowers and grasses. No sign of the torii remained. She was alone. Ahiko got up, and saw a city in the distance. She headed toward it, unsure and shaken. Her odd appearance got her stared at and her inability to speak the language was a great barrier, though she could, due to her innate magical ability, make herself understand them at times.

Over the next months, she learned to speak the local common tongue and discovered that she was in a town called Riddleport in Varisia. But Ahiko never really fit in to the complex society of Riddleport and missed her home terribly. Her healing abilities were welcome in town and she made many friends, but still it wasn't home.

Word filtered in via a trade caravan from Sandpoint that a caravan had left for Brinewall Castle to investigate the place. She studied the history of Brinewall and it intrigued her, the tale of the sudden disappearance of the entire population of the place some years earlier. Perhaps the caravan could use a healer? Ahiko packed a bag and set out to join this caravan, if only she could catch up to it in time...

caravan folk to know:

from Kalistrine: "Over there, that's Koya's wagon. She's the caravan's Fortune Teller and a Priestess of Desna. Sandru there's the owner and operator of the caravan. The Elf there is Shalelu. She's been acting as a scout and outrider for us. Ameiko's the Tian woman with the musical instrument. I use the term loosely. Luckily I'm usually away on patrol when she gets the thing out. That's her brother Takeshi - he's a bit of a swordsman and a mage. The Tian girl is Liu Na."
