![]() I have done on-the-fly GMing many times. This took place in my own campaign setting as a wilderness hex crawl. To me, that was the most freeform experience ever. The PCs liked it. Everything they did helped to co-create my game world. As a result it was really just as much their world as it was one that I brought into being. Fun times! ![]()

1) Paizo has separate pawn packages from the Bestiary and many of the Adventure Paths. 2) There are plastic minis of the iconics and many of the monsters & encounters from various Adventure Paths. 3) The flip mats are not meant to be "stand up". Not everyone likes those. There are other companies that make those, so you can buy from them - or you can make your own. Your complaints are a bit on the harsh side, IMHO. There are no "serious flaws" with the Beginner Box. You just need to check out the things that Paizo sells a bit more thoroughly. ![]()

If the messageboards are any indication of how the Beginner Box has been received, then the payoff for Paizo is in the products they sell aa a result of the BB. I know it has helped me introduce new players to the game and led me to more purchases of regular Pathfinder materials. :) ![]()
![]() I got my first Pathfinder Adventure Path subscription in the mail yesterday... I see there is a somewhat polar reception of this particular module, but it is the reason why I finally got off my butt and subscribed. Things I like:
As a GM that runs fast-paced hack n slash when there are combat encounters (and that is usually often), but also has "plans within plans" running in the background of everything, for me, Council of Thieves #2 just adds to future possibilities as much as it provides an interesting adventure. It is understandable that this will not appeal to everyone, but I think it serves a purpose for many. The Sixfold Trial is part of a whole world and remembering that may take the edge off of the initial reception for those that aren't "grooving" on it as much. Golarion is a great campaign setting. This Adventure Path volume can only add to it in the long run. Just my personal opinion, so I am not stating this to nay-say anyone else, but as I said, The Sixfold Trial is what made me get off of the fence and subscribe and I am 100% pleased with it :) ![]()

![]() I wrote a multi-act play for my old Ptolus campaign that was based on a pantheon and its past mythological happenings. I cannot wait for this to arrive so I can see how this was done! It seems that gaming is like acting in some respects, so I think it is a natural inclination for some GMs to eventually want to include an actual stage play into the game. This is probably so awesome that the author will get a standing ovation from me. *hurry, hurry delivery!* For some reason I have the feeling this will be one my favorite adventures to run, ever. ![]()

![]() I tend to agree with those that wish the populations to remain a bit "nebulous". Every GM has different plans for their campaign.
Common sense or fantastic reasoning both work for me! In my campaign if the Imprimatur population level was all of a sudden jacked up by official sources far beyond/below what I envision it, I would still be altering it anyway. Being of the Andoran faction, you can see why such freedom appeals to me. (hehe) It might be cool for some GMs to have such statistics to get an idea of how each nation or region stacks up in population (human and/or other), so i am not actually against it. However, I don't think Paizo staff has to retroactively "fix" something in the Campaign Setting that was created before the Pathfinder PRG was created, nor should they have to be on the defensive. "Make up something or go with common sense population levels for what you envision the campaign to be like." Maybe there was a recent plague. Maybe good harvests and weather have been happening overall in Golarion for the past 25 years. Maybe areas are still recovering because of war. I think no matter what the official population levels are set at, history and weather and things we just don't totally know yet are going to make that number start at some semi-arbitrary level anyway. I don't think it is a major issue or anything we as a community should get our feathers ruffled about. Let's just talk about the factors and see what may or may not make sense to the various types of players, GMs and staff here :) -Adelwulf ![]()
![]() Since the free PDF is a perk for a somewhat guaranteed purchase of everything come comes down the line for a particular subscription path & shipping postage, I think that Paizo has done a good job of making it worth one's while to get it direct from them. I have and will continue to buy Paizo products from my local hobby shop. I get a 10% discount as a member, which basically takes care of the tax. However, why would I buy direct from Paizo w/o such a perk as the free PDF if I had to pay shipping on top of it, when in 20 minutes I could have the same product from my local game store w/o such shipping costs? Immediate gratification... free PDF... shipping costs... wait time... I think it all balances out and doesn't diminish buying locally, but also helps Paizo get more business from those that might like to commit to a subscription or that do not have a local game shop around. If Paizo can do a scheme with local businesses to get a free PDF with a purchase of a Paizo product, that's cool, but having perks for subscriptions is also worthy, too. I guess if you didn't have a local game store, then subscribing might be the only way to go for those that love Paizo. But it is nice for me to grab the odd product here and there from a local game store or choose to subscribe to a subscription (or several perhaps) and receive a benefit by doing so. I buy hobby material from my local game store, Amazon and Paizo directly. I think I just weigh the benefits and options of what it is I am purchasing from whom. :) ![]()

![]() Fan-based podcasts regarding rpgs and other "cult" phenomenon are easy to do and take the perspective of the fans in mind, too. Savvy fan-based podcasts sometimes have interviews with big shots or celebs from the companies or whatever that they are interested in, so direct Paizo input could happen over time. I would rather see a fan-based podcast, so that fans could have a hand in expressing themselves, too and also so that Paizo has the time to produce games, etc. At the rate that Customer Service gets back to you (I have been waiting 4 days for a return phone call on an incorrect order issue) I think Paizo has enough on its hands and little time to create podcasts LOL Instead of asking someone else to do it, I think the fans should take initiative and do it themselves :) just my 2 cents worth. ![]()

![]() Last night I picked up the Adventure Planner after looking at similar products. I would have to say that it is definitely worth it. Some of the categories in the Adventure Planner are not going to be new to most veteran GM's, but having it all there in a nice format to remind you and to easily fill in with your personalized information is very handy. Some of the categories I would not have remembered or thought of to make any concrete notations about, but the Adventure Planner made me go : "Oh yeah! Don't forget to note that..." ------- I know that no "generic" adventure/campaign planner is perfect, but here are some of my thoughts on the Adventure Planner: 1) The price is nice!
2) The Adventure Planner is geared towards Pathfinder and asks you what official products you are using in the campaign or adventure and also gives you places to note your own specific modifications of anything from character classes to spells to world setting changes, etc 3) It is fairly comprehensive. You can note anything from the year in game to major NPCs to your favorite traps or teverns, etc
4) Typographically is is clean and space is generally well laid out in the forms and page sections of the Adventure Planner. It is visually simple, yet appealing and makes good use of space. I have more praises, but I will end those for now. ------- I only have two minor gripes, but as I said before, no product is perfect, but I think it would be nice to see these added to future revisions: a) The Adventure Planner needs an Index!
b) To take the Adventure planner from a very good 4 star product to a 5 star masterpiece of top-notch professionalism, making it a fillable PDF would clinch it as indespensible to any Pathfinder Gamemaster!
------ If there are revisions to include these suggestions, I hope that prior purchasers would get an updated version gratis. My two minor suggestions/gripes aside, I recommend the Adventure Planner to anyone that wants ideas or forms on how to notate and plan their adventures and Pathfinder campaign.

![]() My Pathfinder-Ptolus hybrid campaign that I just started about a month ago is really fun. I have been watching the ideas here. One thing I am doing is making the Delvers' Guild a local branch of the Pathfinder Society. I have eliminated certain aspects of original Ptolus, such as characters being bound to any area, but I can see still playing that as being fun :) My choice of location for the city makes Ptolus in the midst of some interesting potential politics between other friendly and/or rival cities: Here, I have placed Ptolus North across from Magnimar and West of Riddleport. I did not want to replace any existing cities in Golarion and the bay there looked quite inviting as a place for the City By The Spire! I think that mixing Ptolus with the Golarion campaign setting is a logical choice for Ptolus fans. It does neither Ptolus nor Pathfinder any injustice - they compliment each other well, IMHO. I am so thankful for the PFRG for many reasons, but one is that it allows my beloved city to breathe fresh air once more :) ![]()

A Drawback with some form of "payoff" for a character isn't too bad - I agree. But, for example, I certainly wouldn't want to give a cleric of a faith that is already hardcore against any other faith/worldviews/gods any bonus for choosing the Fanaticism Drawback if that is how they are to be played anyway. However, a smart player could use a Drawback as a secret advantage at times ... and that I think is good, because it shows creativity and versatile role-playing skill. I agree with you that SOME benefit to a Drawback is fine, but not blatant abuse of Drawbacks. As I said before, I have used those in my campaigns as a standard requirement that a character have a drawback, but I like this system, because it also gives a little for what it takes :) ![]()

I find that players tend to go one way or the other almost exclusively many times. I bet in all my years of gaming I have taken a multi-class character 3 x (counting what will be my newly adapted Rogue/Swashbuckler) I would like to add a few more comments about the Character Drawbacks in the Tome of Secrets: 1) Some "Drawbacks" would be boons to certain character types, so I wonder if the Skill Ranks given in exchange should be negated or reduced, depending upon the character. Some Drawbacks definitely warrant the 4 ranks due to their high amount of hindrance to most characters, but I have always made my players take at least one and this seems like a reasonable system I can adapt to my new Pathfinder campaign. 2) The ones listed are a good start, but as a GM, I would definitely make up more if I was going to allow this "rule" in my game. The Tome of Secrets itself recommends that you do that. Better yet, as I stated before, I would solicit & allow players to suggest them for their characters w/ GM approval and appropriate # of Skill Ranks determined. All-in-all, the Tome of Secrets is a good resource to get ideas from and to add some extra flavor to a Campaign, it seems. ![]()

![]() I got the pdf yesterday.
I am not convinced about all of the particular Character Drawbacks listed, and the # of extra Skill Ranks you get for taking one. I think 2 ranks is good enough for many listed, IMHO. However, I think if a GM made up more or allowed the players to suggest them for approval for their characters, the GM could modify the number of Skill Ranks as they deemed fit. I would say the Tome of Secrets is worth checking out for the price.
