The Horn Level 2

Aurex responds to Clyde, "These elves tasted rather earthy and muscular, I'd wager they are not living soft lives in Farholde".

He looks at Grumble, "Are you eating the rest or shall I partake?"

The Horn Level 2

Aurex removes the armor and the weapons from the two kills closest to him and feasts on the remains of the elves, "Succulent morsels..."

Havelyn sheathes his blade and turns to Aurex, "Tell me Wyrm, do we believe that winged creature was the culprit behind the recent spying on our activities here at the Horn?"

Aurex shrugs, "It would make sense".

Havelyn turns to Mal, "I should like to question the Mitran first, thereafter, you may do with her as you will, agreed?"

Aurex enters the rom and attacks the nearest elf!

Melee Bite 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
2 Claws 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 Damage - 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 Damage - 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

The elf screams out in agony as Aurex's claws rend the life from the foolish female elf...

The Horn Level 2

"Hello, what's this..." Havelyn grins at Aurex as the others charge forward.

Aurex grins wickedly as the former Paladin finds a secret door in the hallway.

The Wyrm slides into the room, and opens the door to his immediate left, assuming it is the back-door into the Temple, he assumes that Havelyn will guar his flank if need be!

WHOOOOSSHHHH!

Aurex releases his breath weapon on the two hapless, elves? he can see. He cares not what they are so long as they burn!

Breath Weapon Fire 3d8 ⇒ (6, 2, 2) = 10

I assume that you will be flying back on Aurex in the dead of night correct? :)

During the day that'd be quite the sight!

Round 4

Aurex remains silent, swoops into a dive and attacks!

Flyby Attack Bite - 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 - 2 = 24 - Damage 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Aurex's powerful bite packs a stinging puncture on your left shoulder.

His dive is so fast and skillful that you are unable to swing at him.

However, as his speed is 40', that only puts him 10' away from you, so your next attack can be javelin of melee!

Round 5 - FIGHT!
Grumble - GO!
Aurex.

I'm having way too much fun with this.

Aurex is sad he's going to lose....

Round 3

Aurex's eyes narrow but his slits widen, you can tell he is feeling the effects of your jawing and prowess!

Aurex is shaken for 3 rounds!

In response he circles around and opens his maw, spewing forth the Dragon fire which most mortals fear!

Breath Weapon 3d8 ⇒ (2, 8, 7) = 17 Reflex Save DC 15.

2 Rounds of Shaken condition remain.

Round 4- FIGHT!
Grumble - GO!
Aurex.

Round 2

Aurex flips over to face you, snapping his jaws at you while summoning fire from the back of his throat!

Dazzling Display (Intimidate - Demoralize Opponent DC 10 + Grumble Hit Dice + Grumble WIS Bonus = 15) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17

Despite your confidence, you realize this is still a Wyrm, not an ancient or an adult, but a dragon nonetheless. Grumble is shaken for one round, –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Aurex is still 30' above you, not directly above but close to it. Was hoping for a better roll on that check...

Round 3 - FIGHT!
Grumble - GO!
Aurex.

Yeah, no way he's fighting you on the ground!

Round 1

The dragon does not respond verbally. Aurex leaps into the air, using his hind legs and his tail to give him a boost! He flies and begins turning away from you, seeking to gain altitude.

For his tough talk, it seems he is wisely avoiding a ground exchange with you...

He is now 30' up in the air.

---

Round 2 - FIGHT!
Grumble - GO!
Aurex.

The young Dragon snorts in response.

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

---

Round 1 - FIGHT!
Grumble - GO!
Aurex.

Aurex is currently on the ground 60' from your current position at the base of the Horn.

OK, the battle begins tomorrow, that was a 90 minute post to get Gameplay up and running, too damned late for me to focus on that Aurex build.

I'll finalize Aurex tonight and then wear Grumble as a nice necklace tomorrow :-)

I wonder what your new character will look like! :-)

This fight should be a humbling experience for our little Wyrm, but at least you'll have a bad ass Cohort afterwards.

Also, for a secondary cohort, take a look at Morana. I realized as I was re-reading the thread last weekend that she left before the Horn was entered. That's why I have her back at Farholde with Soren. I think she would be a good cohort to move about towns with plus she is already a Knot member who signed a pact and can be trusted.

The dragon chuckles and nods in agreement, "With your dangerous blade wrapped, I'll keep my breath under wraps. So be it, it was long overdue..."

Getting late, tomorrow I'll settle on Aurex's final form and we shall settle the debate by combat!

After a few hours the Dragon returns, Nate's corpse is nowhere in sight.

He lands some distance away from you, about 60', showing he has a healthy respect for your prowess.

"So, you await me outside eh Ogrekin? We have been butting heads for some time now haven't we? With the death of the rest of the active members of the Knot, we both know Lord Havelyn wishes to keep his hands clean and Soren and Morana seem content to let the rest of us do the work.

So long as Nathaniel was alive I was content to be a mere steed as it were. Now I must consider my proper place in this pecking order the Cardinal is creating.

Were I more mature I would abandon this petty quest altogether and fly far from Talingarde, but at my age there is only so far even I can fly without rest and I do not know what is beyond these shores or how close such a land may be. However, I am no fool. The Mitrans would see me as a grave threat and hunt me down were I to simply set up my own lair in the south. To the north I would be subject to the whims of older more powerful members of my kind, something I do not relish, which is why I accepted the bargain with Nathaniel in the first place. For me to truly roam free in this land unimpeded, it would behoove me to remain and assist the Cardinal with this gambit.

But what am I to do with you Ogrekin? Shall I suffer your taunts as good natured ribbing as if we were equals? Shall I simply cook you brains and eat you for dinner?"

The Dragons eyes narrow to slits, and they drift to the sword you now wear at your waist, "You were formidable, with that blade you may be downright deadly. Of course, your arms are only so long, aren't they?" He looks up to the open sky and back at you and grins, smoke rising from his nostrils.

IF you manage to overcome Aurex, any interest in dipping into that Dragon Rider class that Nate had?

I don't think I'm doing anymore class dips until after 9th level. Currently I'm planning on going into Hellknight.

I have a free Trait I haven't picked. I'm thinking I might take the one that lets my Cohort be 1 level behind me, and taking Vile Leadership. Aurex seems like he'd make a great Cohort. What do you think?

That certainly makes sense!

Alright, I shuffled things around. I dropped a couple of Sphere abilities to take the Leadership Sphere (cohort package), and the Advanced Cohorts talent (it's a Legendary talent, so it requires GM approval, but it does exactly what we're talking about so I figured you'd be fine with it).

Here's the gist-

Aurex becomes my Cohort (assuming I beat him). He'd be a 6 Hit Dice dragon that would always act on my initiative, and would gain a couple bonus feats and stat increases. I'm happy to re-stat him, but I'd kinda prefer to have you keep running him as an NPC. I like the way you do his personality, and I'm already juggling Grumble and Raaven.

6 HD Red Dragons are usually Small size, so we'd need to come up with some reason he's larger, but still so weak. Not sure how it was explained by his connection to Nate. Is he cursed? Did losing Nate weaken him?

Grumble now counts as having Leadership, but only has a Cohort. He won't get Followers unless I spend another Sphere talent in it. The upside is that I can switch out my Cohorts by spending 8 hours in a population center (or near Aurex's den) and Recruiting.

I don't know if it will come up often, but having a small stable of rotating Cohorts that I can draw on when Aurex isn't ideal to have around is pretty cool.

I'll check out your version, but I'll probably allow him to retain some of his previous abilities despite losing Nate. I am ok with him retaining his large size.

Changes approved.

The Dragon narrows its eyes at you and does not respond.

As Nate's body is unceremoniously tossed back up he takes Nate into his jaws and places his body on his back. "Have a care Ogrekin. When next we meet, these slim tunnels may not protect you from my full abilities.

I shall return and then we shall speak..." Aurex exits the cavern.

Brian grimaces as you throw the bodies back up, "I think we might wish to hide the rest of the bodies Mr. Jack. With the Dragon gone and the rest of your Knot perished, we don't wish to create the illusions that we are severely weakened before the Boggards.

It is now just you, me, and Lord Havelyn present".
