When Moon and Histya stalk forward, Maidie flies a bit higher among the treetops, making sure she’s close enough to quickly come to their aid if needed.

At the sound of combat, she dives forward through the foliage. Seeing the relatively minor threat, she reaches the same conclusion as Moon and selects a non-lethal option to enable the capture of a live prisoner.

She gestures and the ground beneath the goblins is suddenly very slick.

Grease under as many gobbos as possible.

Emerald gives Betzolte a glare when she brings up the spiders.

"Just you wait, Betzolte. Dragons have long memories and I will remember this," she growls. "Maybe I'll convince some fey to steal all your left shoes and boots or one out of every pair of socks."

Betzolte chuckles a bit. "I'm complimenting you, Emerald!" she replies. "Guess I'll have to work on getting myself some cold-iron-toed boots!"

At the battle, she rumbles after Moon and Histya roaring a battle-cry.

Moon and Histya take the trio by surprise, badly mauling two of them, but these goblins are made of sterner stuff than your average goblins, and their eyes light with joy and rage in equal measure as the rest of the Heroes of Kassen stumble onto the scene.

Erigga and Maidie are up!

"Good gear indeed!" Betzolte comments, turning over one of the battleaxes and admiring its craftsmanship. "Either the hag's supplying them well or these are older spoils of battle for them. They'll be much better served in our hands."

Kassen Battle Maps

Moon doesn't find anything written down, given that goblins think writing will steal the thoughts from their heads. She does find that the leader of the small band does have a map with the Manylegs' camp marked on it.

While the gear is indeed far better than what's found on most goblins, it's of gnomish or dwarven make and pretty old based on the wear and tear. More importantly, it's all sized for smaller folks, like halflings, gnomes, and goblins.

A closer inspection of the goblins reveals wolfish fangs and furry patches on their hides. The apparent leader has a wooden trinket carved to look like a full moon that is painted red and hangs from a leather thong around its neck.

Moon is disappointed they couldn't take one of the creatures alive. The information they had was likely more valuable than their gear.

Moon hides the corpses before they continue on.

With confirmation that they have made contact with the Bloodmoon tribe, Maidie rechecks her alchemical supplies to make sure they have a way to overcome their natural damage resistance.

I know that Maidie has prepared at least two doses of silver weapon blanch, as mentioned in THIS POST and one of us should have the mithril dagger. But I can't seem to find it on any of our character sheets. Maidie has her portable alchemy set, so she can churn out more weapon blanch in less than a day if needed.

As I would with undead, I offer them the sword’s redemption – nothing else. If we find Meep with them – and afflicted – I’ll try to save her. But for the rest…” she shakes her head decisively, ”I give no quarter, so don’t ask for it.”

Not sure what kind of K check (if any) let’s you know about Lycanthropy. I’m hoping that roll is good enough to get the basics.

We gathered significant intel on werewolves and other lycanthropes earlier in the campaign. Maidie also has a special interest in this topic for...reasons.

What Olmira taught Grob about were-beasts:

Olmira was unusually forthright when it came to discussing the various were-beasts and their traits. Thinking back on it, she probably knew something about the Bloodmoon tribe.
Were-beasts are hardy and can shrug off most attacks, however, silver causes them harm. Some have more control over their transformations than others, being able to shift at anytime and not just on the nights of a full moon. Those tend to be were-beasts that were born that way. Those that can only transform on the nights of a full moon tend to be those afflicted with the were-beasts' curse.

Were-beasts can pass on their curse by biting or sometimes by clawing their victims. Wolfsbane can help someone break it before it sets in, but it has to be administered before the night of the next full moon. Curing someone after that usually requires powerful magic or even divine intervention, something that your mentor wasn't too pleased to admit.

As you recall all of this, you also remember that Olmira started haring off somewhere ever month around the time of the full moon about a year ago. How strange.

Night falls as you all talk. The clouds cover the sky, but before the winter snows came, the moon wasn't quite half-full. Those versed in the basics of the lunar cycle realize that there's only five days before the next full moon.

The real question is...how long until the full moon?

Male Half Orc Druid 5 (HP: 38/38; AC 19, (t11, ff17); F+5,R+2,W+7; init +1/Per +13)

Grobradon nods "Okay." He sighs a bit "I sure hope Meep ISN't infected. I still worry about her too."

Kassen Battle Maps

"Let's hope they aren't feeling that spiteful. It might be kinder to kill her than let her suffer through that," Emerald says.

Moon, you know pretty much what Maidie put in the spoiler. I'm assuming that she'll tell you whatever it is you don't know.

So, where to? Continue on to the Blood Moon camp? See if you can capture one of them alive? Do the Fangwood Boogie?

Betzolte and Grobradon find the trail leading to the Bloodmoon camp, and they also notice that something appears to be stalking them as the Heroes move through the Fangwood. Goblin and wolf tracks, well hidden and showing atypical care and caution for goblins, cross the path the party follows.

Disturbingly, some of the wolf tracks appear to be much larger than any normal wolf's

Male Half Orc Druid 5 (HP: 38/38; AC 19, (t11, ff17); F+5,R+2,W+7; init +1/Per +13)

"Wolf tracks should not be that damn big, some of them anyway are immense. We're being stalked... goblin and wolf tracks. Maybe one turns to the other even if the moon isn't with us, maybe it's just riding wolves of unusual sized." He grumbles.

”Possibly a warg, a dire wolf, or a werewolf that can control its curse… In any case, I don’t like being stalked. Let’s proceed a bit then double-back and set an ambush.”

I’m thinking we move along the trail looking reasonably good (for hiding) thicketed area. We continue past it for about 20 yards then move off trail and double-back to the thicket. Then we hunker down and wait to see if we can catch the baddies. I’d rather fight these guys here, not as a surprise at our backs when we get to the enemy camp. Alternatively, we can try to track them right now and fight them where we find them.

If we go with the ambush plan…

If we decide to track these guys…
Survival (Track): 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 2 = 26 (+2 vs Undead, +4 vs Human ; +2 in forests)

If one of these guys is a human, that’s another +4 to PER and Tracking

Kassen Battle Maps

Or it might be a whole week. Yeesh. I am sorry folks.
New map is up!

It soon becomes clear to Moon that they will need to find and prepare a battlefield soon. Howls can be heard in the distance as the would be hunters seek to make the Heroes of Kassen the hunted. As swiftly as the ranger is able, she finds what looks like a good enough spot, a place where two game trails merge by a frozen stream as it wends its way through a gully.

The howls are closer now, maybe a minute away at best.

Place yourselves where you want to be when the fighting starts. I'll let y'all have two rounds to cast spells.

Female fairy conjurer 5 | HP 40/40 | AC 18/18/14 (22/18/14 w/ mage armor), CMD:13 | Fort: +4, Ref:+6, Will: +8 | Perc: +8 , Init:+10 | (Shift (10 ft) 7/7) | Hero Points: 3 | Status: N/A

Already protected by her mage armor spell, Maidie's first priority is to bolster the group with additional warriors.

As she launces into the summoning spell, she reflects on how much she has learned in a few short week. By now, her summoned allies are both stronger and arrive in greater numbers.

Casting Summon Monster III to call 1d3+1 small earth elementals

Number of elementals summoned (Augmented + Superior Summoning): 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

The familiar shape of Cragg-el rises from the ground, accompanied by two similar elemental warriors.

"We're exposed here and our enemies approach from all directions. Our earth-born allies here will help us secure the bottlenecks and give us time to assess the strength of our enemies. I'll post one at each trail, to act as our forward defense. "

Maidie gestures towards the three trails leading into the clearing and gives a few short instructions in Terran. They each salute and move to their assigned posts.

Turning to Grobradon and Betzolte, she adds:

"Don't cast your strongest spells before we see what we're up against. We likely won't have time to rest before we assault the Bloodmoon camp. If these enemies are very strong, I can make you all faster, but only if you stay close together."

"Grob, your entangle spell should be our first line of escalation if there are many of them or they have powerful allies like a winter wolf or werewolf. Use it to slow melee fighters, wolfpacks or spellcasters. Save Call lightning for the camp."

"Betz, use low-power spells like grease or color spray to stop charges and control groups of weaker enemies."

Her spells cast, she rises into the air and readies her wand, prepared to quickly assess the threat and adjust her tactics if needed.

I'll add elemental tokens to the map later. Best-case, we expend only minor spells and chew through the ambush with elementals, physical attacks and Inspire Courage. If it’s a heavy strike force, we escalate, but only after confirming the threat warrants high-level resources.

Magic fang gives one natural weapon or unarmed strike of the subject a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls. The spell can affect a slam attack, fist, bite, or other natural weapon. The spell does not change an unarmed strike’s damage from nonlethal damage to lethal damage.

When Betzoltes does not appear to cast any defensive spells, Maidie realizes that she may have overdone her warning to conserve resourses.

”A single protective spell is probably wise, Betz. We need to conserve the good stuff, but we won’t make it to the camp if you get mauled here,” she says, pointing to Grob casting barkskin on Moon.

I’d suggest that Betz use Mirror Image on herself. She has two of those prepped.
