Cardinal A. Thorn
The guard soon dies, the blood drain too much for his weakened state to keep him alive any longer.
The other guard dying beside Seltyiel means the wall is now completely yours. You don't hear anyone approaching. Whatever trap they tried to set for you while you were in the tower has been defeated.
Sarela Falrin
"I believe the next plan was to head for the gatehouse, yes? Shall we go, trying to avoid being seen by the guards on top of it?"
Demian.
Snapping out of it, Demian nods to Sarela and begins sneaking along the wall to the north.
Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Morthos "the Malevolent"
"Yes, to the gatehouse it is. Let us not waste another moment. And if we are able then let us avoid any and all guards; but if not then so be it. Escaping is our number one priority. I would prefer we accomplish our task with as little 'fanfare' attached to it as possible."
Hopefully we can make it there without being seen. We're on top of the wall now, correct?
Sarela Falrin
Sarela tries sneaking quietly along the wall.
Stealth: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
Cardinal A. Thorn
Take 10 on stealth is allowed out of combat/distractions/etc.
Eowithe Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Seltyiel Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Guards: 2d20 ⇒ (6, 7) = 13
Carefully sneaking along the west wall of the prison, you make it past each wall tower and even to the wall of the gatehouse, right below the guards without being noticed, evading the light of their lanterns as the searched the grounds and walls for you from their vantage point.
The gatehouse roof is 10ft. above you, but the crenelations force you to climb 15ft. to get over them onto the roof. How do you get up?
Surprise Round?
Battle Map
You don't know exactly where the other 3 guards on the roof are.
Sarela Falrin
Sarela looks to Demian and whispers, "Shall we disable those two for a bit so that someone can tie a rope up there and we can ascend?"
Demian.
Demian scrunches his face in thought for a moment. "Without being able to see them I can't disable anyone. I've got one illusion left and would prefer only using it to give cover if things go sour. But..." he trails off as if getting an idea. He then reaches into his exquisite pants and pulls out a scroll gathered from the tower.
"I can make someone invisible and then enlarge them to about twice their size to make getting up easier as they could just reach up and place a looped rope around the crenellation. Thoughts?"
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Looking to Sarela, "If we must disable them - or eliminate them, whichever - then let us."
He then turns his attention to Demian. "A sound plan but not one without its flaws. Whoever you enlarge becomes nothing more than an oversized target for their arrows when the invisibility wears off. That is not something I desire to be. They may all be fools but even a 'blind squirrel can find a nut' if you will," he states candidly.
Demian.
"Then I will do it," Demian replies simply. "Be ready to climb. I will support how I can."
Demian will do these things next.
*gather two ropes
*pre-tie knots so that they can be looped around a crenelation with the excess dropping down
*cast invisibility on himself
*enlarge himself with his 'size alteration' ability*
*place the first rope on the nearby crenelation
*climb up onto the roof while the enlarge is still in effect, north of the placed rope as I should be able to reach.
all of which will be done as quietly as he can manage
Stealth: 1d20 + 5 - 1 - 4 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 5 - 1 - 4 + 20 = 37
Cardinal A. Thorn
As it is a scroll at CL3 the invisibility can last up to 3 mins.
As the others step back a little to give him space, Demian knots the rope from the veil. Then you see him and the rope disappear as it is put into place.
Climb DC 5 to get up.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
"I heard something over here."
Round 1
Initiative is you guys first
Battle Map
Demian.
The invisible Demian releases hold of the rope, moves 20ft north, and then climbs up onto the roof.
Climb, accelerated: 1d20 + 1 - 5 ⇒ (9) + 1 - 5 = 5
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Oh. Cool. Well let's see if we can manage it this time...
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5 Lol! Doesn't get any closer than that now, does it? :) You know, some people just aren't made for climbing. :P
Cardinal A. Thorn
Demian climbs, still invisible. All you see is the waving of the rope. Then Morthos climbs, visible. The 2 nearest guards were looking that way after thinking they heard something and look surprised.
Still need everyone else to post before the guards turn.
Battle Map
Sarela Falrin
Sarela climbs the rope.
Climb: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (1) - 3 = -2
Climb: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (2) - 3 = -1
Sarela tries and fails to climb the rope before she says, "Someone else give it a try!" in frustration.
Cardinal A. Thorn
Barnabus Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Eowithe Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Eowithe Climb again: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
With a little struggle, everyone manages to climb the rope to the roof except Sarela. The guards near you call out, "They're here!" The two across the roof, near the other corner get their bows ready and move a little closer. The two near you draw their longswords and advance, one guard already close enough to attack and wound Barnabus. The wound closes and he appears unharmed thanks to the blood he drained before. yaya for temp hp
longsword @ Barnabus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Round 2
Battle Map
Sarela Falrin
Climb: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (15) - 3 = 12
Sarela finally manages to climb up the rope, drawing her scimitar and focusing her gaze on the one who attacked Barnabas.
Move action to climb, move action to draw scimitar, and the painful stare and hypnotic stare on the guard who attacked Barnabas. +1 damage to the first successful attack against that guard, and -2 to his Will saves.
Eowithe Mourngrym
Round 2
Eowithe moves to engage the nearest guard!
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
But the strain of the climb had sapped the strength from her arms, her swing was ineffectual
GM don't forget about Eowithe's fear aura, DC 10
Demian.
Demian shrinks back to his normal size as the magic wears off. (Into the top right corner of his squares) He then smiles, incants, and raises his hand in a sweeping motion. (Casting Silent Image Will DC 15, if interacted with)
From nowhere a thick wall of fog blankets across the top of roof, obscuring the far guards' views. (60ft x 10ft x 10ft; bisecting the roof and 10ft behind the nearby guards.)
Still invisible, Demian moves toward the northern part, in front of the gatehouse. (diagonal [up-right] two, right two, diagonal [up-right] one)
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Morthos will step up while drawing his sword and strike at the guard threatening him.
With Demian going 'normal' into the top right square, I'm guessing that leaves the square directly above Barnabas vacant? Let me know if not. Ultimately though, he wants to attack the north guard one way or another.
Longsword w/PA: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
AC 21(25 vs. ranged); Hp's 8/21
Barnabas Wright
Sorry, didn't check for a bit. Climb speed is 1/4 movement. It takes 60 feet of base move to climb 15 feet of rope. Barnabas had to move to the rope and then tried to do an accelerated climb to move at 1/2 speed to climb the rope and not block it for other people. I used two move actions and was out of movement for that turn. In the interest of not having to retcon, happy to just carry on with the DM fiat.
Barnabas steps forward 5' step to the east, working towards setting up a flanking buddy and tries to grapple the guard to the north.
Grapple?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Cardinal A. Thorn
Demian creates an illusion of fog, cutting off vision of the far guards.
The rest of you engage the guards, joined finally by Sarela.
Barnabus succeeds on grappling a guard, giving Morthos an easy target to strike.
Seltyiel claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Seltyiel claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Eowithe and Seltyiel attack the other guard.
Break Grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
"Let go of me scum!" They fight back, breaking Barnabus' grapple and the other attacking Seltyiel.
longsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
miss chance: 2d100 ⇒ (29, 12) = 41
Arrows fly through the fog, fired blindly by the archers at the other end of the roof.
Round 3
Battle Map
Demian.
Demian continues concentrating to maintain the illusory fog and sneaks through the fog a little farther to the north. (north 3) As he does so he pulls out the other knotted rope.
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Morthos steps to his left and strikes at the guard again, hoping to hit something other than air.
5' step one square to the right where Morthos is directly above the guard.
Longsword w/PA: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 BOOM! YES! FINALLY! I swear it's like pulling teeth to hit a guard around here. :P
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Crit confirm
Longsword w/PA: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Aw man. That would've been cool if I could've pulled that crit out. Max out on damage TWICE! I do believe I can honestly say that that's never happened. Ah well. At least I hit! :)
AC 21(25 vs. ranged); Hp's 8/21
Barnabas Wright
Hissing at foe escaping and seeing Morthos cut him down, Barnabus turns his attention to the other guard.
Tentacle: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
Flurry: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 2 = 18 Damage?: 1d6 - 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) - 1 + (5) = 10
Sarela Falrin
Sarela moves towards the remaining guard, focusing her gaze on him as she draws her scimitar and strikes at him with the blade.
If I can move to a flank without provoking an AoO, I will.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 +2 if flanking.
Damage, Painful Stare: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7
If I miss, next successful attack against him deals +1 damage.
Cardinal A. Thorn
Morthos takes down one of the guards while Barnabus and Sarela take down the other. You can't see what the other guards across the roof through the fog are doing but no more arrows are fired.
Round 4
Battle Map
Sarela Falrin
Sarela stares at the wall of mist, studying it.
Will, towering ego: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
"I do hope he lets us know where our exit is."
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Morthos takes a moment in an attempt to pierce through the illusion of the mist.
Will: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 HO! Just barely.
Just managing to do so, "It is this way, Sarela. Let us go. We are so close to freedom, I can feel it."
AC 21(25 vs. ranged); Hp's 8/21
Barnabas Wright
Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Barnabas is foiled by the illusion.
So what was the plan? Are we just going over the wall and making a run for it, or going into the gatehouse to take out Blackerly?
Cardinal A. Thorn
Those who have seen through the illusion can see the guards at the other end of the roof holding their position, bows drawn and ready to shoot at anything that comes at them.
Round 5
Battle Map
Demian.
Demian continues concentrating on the illusory fog as he creeps back toward the rest of the group.
"I set up a rope on the crenellation at the north edge of the fog. I'd suggest killing those guards with bows first, but you do you," Demian whispers.
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Raising an eyebrow at the invisible voice, "The guards are the least of my concerns as of this moment. Hopefully they will remain as such. Escape is my main concern at this point. Freedom is close at hand. I say we find our way to it." He then looks to those he can see, "For those of you who are willing, follow me and I will lead you to the rope and to our freedom." He then proceeds to do just that. Once Morthos gets to where the rope is anchored, he looks over the side to see if there are enemies awaiting them at the bottom.
Man I really want to get out of here. It just feels like we are SOOOOOO stinking close.
Sarela Falrin
Sarela further studies the fog, trying to see through the illusion.
Will, towering ego, told it’s an illusion: 1d20 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 4 = 20
Morthos pointed it out, so now she could see through the illusion. Pulling out her bow, she whispered, ”The guards can shoot us while we climb - that illusion doesn’t cover the wall. Let’s kill them now.”
I don’t see the two archers on the map. How far away are they?
Barnabas Wright
Will save: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 4 = 10
Unable to pierce the veil of the illusion, but grasping the general plan, Barnabas move towards the edge of the outer wall.
Someone is going to have to lead me to that rope.
Sarela Falrin
With the guards about 100 feet away, Sarela decided shooting them wasn't worth it. Instead, she followed Morthos to where the rope was, saying, "Let's get out of here quickly."
She keeps an eye on where the guards are in case they decide to get brave and approach them.
Eowithe Mourngrym
Eowithe, with escape at hand, agrees, "Yes, though I'd like to kill each of these guards and burn this place to the ground, I like living! "
Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
She blinks and can see the wall and guards through the cripple's phantasm.
She moves forward and grasps Barnabas' arm, "This way..." and leads him to where the rope is tied.
Morthos "the Malevolent"
Once the others draw near, Morthos stows his shield and immediately begins the descent toward the ground, and hopefully... to freedom.
Climb: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 Boy o boy I do like to live dangerously.
Cardinal A. Thorn
Demian has set up a rope that will get you past the gatehouse without having to fight past any more guards. You all group up together and Morthos is the first one to climb down. The smooth gatehouse wall gives way to rough, steep rocks before you make it to the smooth path. The path leads down the cliff towards the bridge that takes you to the mainland where a gate and a checkpoint waits.
The guards look keenly at the mist until one of them gives the other a command. "They might be sneaking below. Check the hatch!" The other guard moves over to look below and sees nothing. "No one down here."
"What are they doing?"
