"You picked the wrong band to owe a debt to, my friend." Mateo says with a soft chuckle, heading deeper into the dark as Coronus's shield began to come to light.

The tunnel descends into the earth. Out of the darkness rises a stench worse than anything you have ever known. The shrieking sound from deep within the caves suddenly ceases.

The path here is about 10' wide, and extends into the darkness. You can barely make out an opening in the wall about 30' down on your right. It is dark, wet, and stinky in here.

Marching order? Special preparations?

As the party sprang into action there was good news, more good news a little unfortunate news.

First Aristeides and Lysander were able to easily shrug off the odor of the Troglodytes, and weren't surprised by their appearance. Then more good news Aristeides is able to immediately send one of the enemies into a deep slumber which he probably won't awake from knowing the party history... then the not so good news. Lysander swung his mighty blade at one of the Troglodytes, only to see him fall into a slumber before his eyes. Unable to stop the blow his Makhaira glanced off the wall and he felt something loosen in the handle. With two ones I've got to make something happen. The blade is damaged until you have a chance to have someone fix it. No mechanical effect, but if you roll another one to hit the blade flies off the handle.

Deimus hesitates. The whole place had so suddenly turned into madness and raw brutality.

And the smell!

He wondered about his course of action, not clear what fire would do to stinking flesh, but then again, the Troglodytes were cutting down those who risked their necks for him, just a waterfall ago.

Deimus tilts his head left, stretching his neck. Now that he was decided... Reaching with his hands, he pulls raw power from the earth and lets it build in his hands, then wills the primal energy into fire, sending it across the room at the Troglodytes.

Aiming at Trog 2, then switch to 3 if he drops.

Mateo's eyes water profusely and he nearly gags as the stench of the troglodytes grow unbearable. He can taste them on his tongue, his breath was hard to catch, and he couldn't keep too focused on them. He falls back with his bow in hand, dodging and weaving out of the claws of the troglodytes. He kicks at the enemy closest to Coronus, trying to help him as he fights to catch his breath.

I'm using Disengage as a bonus action to move away from any of the troglodytes. I will use my standard action to Help Coronus, giving him Advantage on his next attack roll against that enemy. I will use the rest of my move to put me someplace safe from their claws and teeth.

@Demius>>: Still need the CON Save. I'll make it for you to save time. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 CON vs. Poison Stench... Sorry you'd need to roll disadvantage on those attacks due to the Poisoned condition... but they all missed anyway. Also, the damage is only 2d6 as you don't have 3rd level slots yet, unless there is something I'm missing.
Demius prepares to lash the troglodytes with mighty threads of fire, but just as he prepares to loose the bolts the might smell causes him to retch a bit, throwing off his aim.

@Mateo>>: Taking this one a bit out of order as some explanation is required. Disengage is a bonus action, but it doesn't include any movement. So you used disengage disengage (Bonus action) then moved to assist Coronus (Move Action), then assisted him (Action). While you still have movement left you would have to disengage again to move from the threatened area without AoO. This would require an additional bonus action, and even rogues are limited to (1) bonus action per turn... they can just use this bonus action for things others cant. Disengage is an action for everyone else etc... so if you move again after assisting, it will evoke an AoO. I'll let you make the call. (BTW I researched this and it's Jeremy Crawfords ruling.

Mateo gaging and retching spins quickly away from the Trog closest to him, and tries to distract the attention of the ones attacking Coronus... should he stay nearby and try to fight, or flee???

@Coronus>> The gagging and retching continues onto the robust Centaur, and he call forth the power of Chriron to fight alongside him. Sorry but this is still an attack roll you have to roll for disadvantage for subsequent actions, as the "Help" action only applies to the next ability check. I'll let it go this time, and pretend your longsword attack was first, but keep this in mind going forward.

The might spiritual sword seemingly without a sense of smell, cleaves deeply into one of the attacking Trogs almost knocking it from it's feet, but it's hunger continues on unabated, and it resumes it relentless attack.

End of Round 1. Aristiedes and Lysander up.

I'm back. Sorry about the delay.

@Lysander>>: Lysander is able to react quickly as one of the Trogs turns to consider what the ghostly swords is all about. He realizes that the spritiual weapon is able to do real damage, and turns into Lysanders quick movement, ending his existence upon this planet.
He then turns to Trog 4, and lunges to attack, his loose handle betraying his well planned strike.

@Aristiedes>>: Aristeides, somewhat angry at Trog #1 attempting to undo his handywork sends some magical darts of force at the offending miscreant, almost bringing him to his knees... but his resolve keeps him up... for the moment. , and he turns his angry gaze on the mage.

Trog #1 Moves slowly to close in on Aristeides.

So (4) Points of piercing damage from Trog Bite

Trog #2 Takes the time to rise from his slumber and assess the situation. - Normally Lysander would get an AoO on the beast as it stands, but I'm ruling he had to move more than 5' away to strike at Trog #4.

Trog #3 Continues to bleed out in the passage way DEAD

Trog #4 Looks with disgust at Lysanders intrusion upon his procurement of a viable food source, but continues to slash and bite at the delicious Centaur. He scoops out a tender hunk from the Centaurs flank, and slings it in his mouth with a look of triumph.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 Claw 1

8-points of slashing damage from the two claws, with the second hitting a vital region and inflicting an additional 2-points of damage TOTAL: 10 points slashing. Also, you'll need to make a CON Check DC10 to keep your spiritual weapon up.

1d20 ⇒ 11 WIS (Insight vs. Mateo's trick) DC10

The Troglodytes almost fall for Mateo's trick, but at the last minute pull out of their panicked dodge.

@Demius>>: Demius continues to loudly illuminate the cavern, but is thwarted by the walls resistance to catching fire.

@Lysander>>: The stalwart soldier, swings twice at the Trog busy munching on Coronus, and though both strike true, the beast is tougher than he looks, and keeps his bib on for more snacking

@Aristiedes: Aristiedes backs nervously against the cavern wall, and lets forth a flurry of magical nodes that zoom unerringly into the creatures bulk, sending him to an eternal slumber. He falls against his companion that he just woke up almost sending him sprawling again.

Trog #1 is down.

@Coronus>>: Coronus screeches in pain as the Troglodyte tears into his mortal flesh, but keeps trying to attack the newly arrisen Troglodyte with his spiritual Sword, and the newly awakened beast takes a rough blow to the torso which seems to balance him from his mate falling against his legs. NOTE: Trog 3 is already dead, so I switched the attack to Trog2 . Hard to believe this isn't a concentration spell...

He then kicks free of the dining troglodyte enough to call forth the blessings of Chiron, and small dark grey storm clouds gather around his wounds, pelting the open wounds with thunder, and sealing the worst of them.

@Mateo>>As the Trog that had been rending Coronus tried to reach out again, Mateo came storming out of the darkness, and ended the beasts mealtime with a vicious strike, opening his throat, and spilling a torrent of blood onto the worn cavern floor. Trog 4 has joined 3 of his kin in paying the final price.

Trog 2>> Mumbles something that sounds like a battle cry, and turns to gesture his friends to attack... then realizes the situation, and bellows at the top of his lungs, and heads down the passageway deeper into the cavern.

Attacks of opportunity from Lysander, Mateo, Coronus... and if Aristiedes has a weapon ready him as well.

BTW what is the light source you guys that can't see in the dark are using?

Deimus has a light spell on, yes.

"My- That! That smell! How can one think, let alone control mystical energy in this filth!? I'm glad at least my fire did not kill any of us... That would have been terrible! Well, the Troglodytes have been dispatched, so there's that."

Then Deimus falls silent as he realizes the group means to continue deeper into the nauseating tunnels.

Mateo wipes the blood off of his spear's tip, looking back towards the others. Deimus's comments make a grim smile spread across his face as he shook his head.

"Not all of them. Not yet. Coronus, how do you fare?" The centaur had taken the blunt of the damage this fight and he worried slightly looking at the bloody haunch of the warrior.

Once the group was ready, Mateo took the lead once more heading into the darkness. He stayed approximately 20ft ahead of the party, just out of the bright light of Deimus's spell but within the dim light it cast. He kept his eyes peeled for any dangers, quietly moving forward.

I will roll a Stealth, if it become required.

Lysander gives his old squadmate a good-natured fist bump after they cut down the last Trog. "Like old times, 'Teo."

He looks to Coronus who received the worst of the combat's wounds with hopes that he could be healed before they dive deeper into the darkness after Mateo.

"Shhhh. Look ahead of us on the left side of the tunnel, there's an opening with faint light flickering from it. I can hear rough laughter, some mumbling, and smell cooking meat as the breeze carries towards where you entered." Coronus whispers to everyone.

"Give me a few seconds." The centaur asks while cures himself.

Mateo moves forward, but as he does so he accidently kicks over a metal can, which makes a noise as he goes along.

DM Rolls

Spoiler:

1d20 ⇒ 15

Suddenly the voices from the side tunnel cease... Except for one...

"Help me". A gruff voice calls from the tunnel. Mateo can now clearly see the tunnel branching off and down to his left. The passageway continues on ahead, and seems to widen, and branch off in different directions. The odor from further down the tunnel intensifies.

Coronus looks up from the small storm clouds repairing the worst of his wounds as Mateo draws to a stop.

Actions? Special Preparations?

The tunnel to the left slopes downward, and the flickering light, and smell of roasting meet emit from there.

I'll try to post again this evening, or Saturday morning. Probably won't start the true encounter until Monday... depending upon your actions.

Mateo mentally curses as he hits the bronze can, the bit of metal slapping against the walls with an uncomfortable amount of noise. He grimaces and looks back at the party with an apologetic look before whispering to them.

"If there is any preparations to be done, we should do them now." His grin returns as he looks to his friend, nodding for Lysander to join him. "Let's take them."

My goal is to have Lysander join me up front and then move forward after letting any of the spellcasters buff as needed. Then we go forward into combat goodness!

Lysander grins, drawing his shield up to the front of the line. He eyes his damaged makhaira with a shrug. Might as well get the most use out of the weapon before it goes. Just in case, he loosens the silvered dory in the harness strapped to his back.

"Ready when you are." he mutters in low tones to everyone, and no one.

"Preparation?!" asks Deimus, then realizes and takes a short moment to ask the gods not to give him too much trouble when they take him into the afterlife.

"Ok, preparations made... Wait... Coronus, I would like you to have my stick, and Lysander, you can have my shoes. Right. That's about it." he finally says and nods, staff in hand, looking ill-fitted for cave fighting.

There's not much Aris needs to do beforehand, other than open his eyes and be ready for anything.

Mateo gives the others the nod before stepping deeper into the passageway along with Lysander, his spear ready for combat.

Lysander and Mateo enter the sloping passageway, and walk into a gruesome scene. Aristeides and Demius follow them hesitantly, and Coronus brings up the rear, slowed by waiting for his Spiritual weapon.

Coronus... mark off 2 more rounds of it's use.

A natural stair descends into a cavern lit by the flickering fire of a roasting pit. The partially-burnt body of a centaur is spitted over the pit. Across the room is a prison pen fashioned out of petrified timber. It is currently holding a centaur that is being tormented by a half-dozen loathsome lizard people. The creatures poke at the centaur with sharpened sticks and croak with delight when he cries out in pain.

Range is Near for everyone but Coronus, and Medium for him. There is no surprise as they heard you coming.

So in order The whole party... Then the bad guys. To be more specific if it matters...

Lysander, Aristeides, Mateo, Coronus, Deimus, Bad Trogs.

I'm guessing we're still disadvantaged from the stench, yes?

Suffocating from the stench, Deimus, in the hope that it will slow their opponent and perhaps a fair measure of friendly fire, covers the middle of the room (ending about 5 feet from the frontliners) with a thick, impenetrable fog.

Casting fog cloud.

Other question: does Deimus have any hint that the Troglodytes speak Common or Goblin?

Good question. You save at the first of every round, and when you succeed you're good for 24 hours... so if you failed take one for each of the last three rounds.

Troglodytes speak only Troglodyte...

Mateo steps in closer alongside with Lysander, his spear in both hands as he moves to strike at the same one his brave companion attacked. Capitalizing upon the sudden strength that Lysander showed, he aimed for the juicy, less armored sections of the troglodyte.
