Dr. Davaulus does miss a beat as Marcus looms, just as Yazi is preparing to leave. He sniffs and pushes his chair back, adjusting his sleeves and shirt as he does so. He’s certainly put out.
The two Grey Maidens put their hands on their longswords. Davaulus coughs, ”I am here with the authority of the Queen herself, at her behest. Move your body away from me quickly, young man.” When Marcus does not do so immediately, he runs his hand through his hair, muttering, ”it’s hard to find good help in the colonies, isn’t it.”
He taps the place where he put the notebook, ”I was merely observing that most of the origin of the sickness is in Old Korvosa - and as it is my job to keep tabs on things, I know of all the establishments in every district.” If this were true it would be a staggering amount of data to learn.
He stands up, shaken but having at least something of a spine, ”it seems that you won’t help - fine, but I insist you leave. Unless you wish to be immediately arrested.”

"Mhmm. Didn't mean to scare you. Nothing I can do about what I look like." He lowers his voice, quiet and intentional. "And don't worry doc. I never make empty threats." He stands there a moment longer, letting the tension linger, Davaulus standing at his full height still significantly shorter than Marcus. Then he turns and heads for the exit, jerking his head to indicate for his companions to exit first.
Olenna Tucca
Olenna's eyes are wide and her jaw slightly slack as things almost escalate to blows. She puts her left hand surreptitiously within the folds of her cloak, holding her breath until Marcus goes for the door after Yazi. She remains seated but withdraws her hand from her cloak and blinks several times in clear discomfort. This reminds me of the old days. Not in a good way.
"I'm sorry to trouble you, Dr. Davaulus. I'll be sure to include this incident in my report." She stands up and bows her head respectfully to the doctor and the two Grey Maidens. "And I'll speak with Field Marshall Kroft about possible future collaborations. At the very least, you're right that we should look into this suspected Cult of Ghulander. If we have the resources to spare. Thank you for the tip."
It was mostly true. But Olenna wasn't going to let on how much she suspected that this Hospice was involved in something untoward. She couldn't put her finger on what exactly. But there was enough for her not to want to stay here on her own, that was certain.
"Trosker ep Styrk," she says with a salute, quoting the town's archaic Taldane motto as she leaves. Fidelity and Strength. It was taking on a new meaning these days, it seemed.
Vera Esmeranda
Vera has to grip the sides of her dress, filed with shock and then rage at the prick who was playing at being a doctor. If what Olenna said was right, he was running a death chamber for Varisians! She was going to put a stop to Doctor Davalus and his corrupt team of doctors. Somehow. Even if he had somehow gained the Queen's favor.
As the others move to leave, Vera follows along--assuming that Magda does as well. She signals to Magda that time was running out on her magics.
Magda "Magpie" Vasiliu
Mags grabs Vera's hand and whispers "I need speed now!" her voice begs Vera to trust her. Then she is rushing toward the double doors the grey walls are guarding.
"THEY'LL DIE IF WE LEAVE!" a voice yells desperately. Mags voice, begging them all to stay.

Rows of white-sheeted beds line the walls of this room. Each bed holds a patient restrained by leather straps that bind the figure to the sturdy metal frame. At the room’s center stretch simple wooden worktables, each covered in fluidfilled beakers, intricate glass tubes, small burners, and other alchemical instruments.
The table at the center of the room has neatly organized alchemical and surgical tools, as well as neatly organized clipboards with notes.
Each bed appears to have an unconscious person of Varisian descent. Davaulus holds up his hands, ”yes, that is exactly what it looks like. We are experimenting on these people - it’s for the greater good. You see? None are dead. They are safe - they’re just resting. They show unnatural resistance to blood veil; we just want to know why. Yaziyah trusted Magda. If she said these people would die, the Shoanti would much rather take her word over the doctor's, who had already lied to them at least once. So it is with no small measure of relief (and a little glee) that she releases the tight control she's been keeping on her rage.
"For the greater good", yet he spoke of them with such contempt.
"They are safe", yet they were tied down to their beds.
Trying to pin the blame on the wererats.
Threatening her community.
Enough.
She was righteous on this, she knew that, so when she calls on the spirits' help they answer and she feels the rush of their power fill her. She moves to stand guard where she thinks Magda is, in case anyone got ideas to try and hurt the girl, then she looks directly at Davaulus.
"Enough. Let all of them go. You can ask for volunteers if you want to study them, and then you PAY them and you explain ALL that is involved."

Olenna's eyes go to the room and she sees the Varisians lying there, strapped down. Unwilling test subjects under the knife of a man who spoke of them only with antipathy.
She knew what she had seen in the doctor's notes. And none of this was documented in the journal that she had been given. Had there been 100% mortality because he had killed any and all who had survived and were resistant?
She knows...she knows that the Guard is supposed to give deference to this man, by Order of the Queen. But the Queen wasn't her boss. Throughout her training and work in the Guard, she had been told that the Guard served three entities: the Church of Abadar, the city's monarch, and the city of Korvosa. And Korvosa came first. Korvosa's citizens came first. Kroft would understand, she hoped, agree that this was unconscionable.
The lamplighter reaches to a bandolier hidden under her cloak and retrieves a small bottle, which she drinks. She feels her muscles begin to reconfigure underneath her skin, a rapid unpleasant change as slow-twitch muscles were converted en masse to fast-twitch muscles. She might not have studied virology, but anatomy, that was another story. It was disorienting, and she could feel her senses dull with the change. But she had catalogued what she could. Now that the truth was here, she was done with this monster.
"If they are safe, then why are they not documented?" she asks as the skin ripples on her face. "Or are their predecessors among the total Varisian mortality?" She doesn't draw her weapon yet, tempting as it is. She still hopes that this can be resolved peaceably. She looks at the Grey Maiden next to her. "This can't be why you serve," she pleads. "Don't you serve Korvosa?"
Drawing and drinking a Dex Mutagen. I'll update my header shortly.
GM Litejedi
The gray maiden doesn’t respond.
Davaulus sighs, dramatically, ”well, drawing your weapons against me - that is high treason you know. I am here on the Queen’s orders, whether or not she knows about what we’ve done - I was told I should help with the plague and she trusted me - giving me free reign over the matter - that is all I have done.” He gestures vaguely.
”This curing, that linament - whatever you’ve been doing - it just has been delaying the inevitable. The only way for Korvosa to emerge stronger is if the veil burns through the population. Those who are left will be stronger - to believe otherwise is unnatural. Disease is a part of life." He rubs his temple, gesturing towards the door, "these experiments might have kept the casualties to a minimum - and all of our work for naught. Because I forgot to lock the door.” He straightens his sleeve and retrieves a small vial, inclining his head he adds "and... Varisians... these people - they hold everyone back surely you all see it - I’m not sure why anyone cares about them. At least here I was bringing meaning to their miserable lives. Well, no matter. Arrest them!” He quaffs the potion and disappears.
The sound echoes through the warehouse. A reminder of the description of the room.

"The only treason here is against the people of Korvosa, you racist sonofa@#$%&! By the power vested in me by the Korvosan City Charter Amendments 95 and 178, I'm placing you under arrest, Davaulus!"
It's a bluff, but Olenna doesn't expect most people--especially outsiders--to have the full City Charter and all 247 amendments memorized. Olenna wasn't the field marshal, and her family was not one of the Great Houses. But the spirit of those amendments, and her own conscience, help her feel confident in this decision. And besides, with this kind of evidence, surely she could leverage some old connections and get both Field Marshal Kroft and the leaders of the five Great Houses to do something about this horror show.
And then the bastard disappears. Olenna gasps and then watches as Marcus turns into a whirling maelstrom and Yazi takes advantage of the chaos to drop several of the guards all at once. Then Magda appears--where had she come from?--and points to a door in the northwest corner. The lamplighter quaffs another vial from her bandolier and her eyes once again transmute to counteract the magic that enables invisibility. (I.e., She drinks an extract of See Invisibility.)
If Olenna can see Davaulus, she moves towards him. If she can't, she moves towards Mags and the door in the northwest corner. I don't see any Gray Maidens on the map, but I do see a Plague Doctor. I know that there were three plague doctors and two gray maidens. Either way, Olenna will probably have to move past an enemy with an Acrobatics DC of their CMD. She can try to move full speed by increasing the DC by 10, so CMD +10. Are the dice gods on my side?
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 11 + 2 = 18 Doubtful. Not going to spend inspiration on that, just going to provoke AoOs. Intended path is drawn in Red on Roll20.

Vera's disembodied voice calls out--only Olenna sees that she's invisibly standing right next to Yaziyah.
"We're going after him, Yazi--hold on to me!" Vera pulls out a very expensive scroll she's been saving for emergencies. Pursuing a Varisian-killing plague doctor counts in her book. She follows the incantation, and the scroll dissolves as Vera and Yazi try to enter the adjacent room.

With a click, the door opens - to an empty shaft. Or mostly empty.
Marcus, Olenna, and Magda see the top of Yazi's head disappear, an annoyed look on her face, somewhat quickly.
A quick peek makes it clear that this lift ... thing, is descending. It's not clear exactly where to.
Now that the light is better, and more people can see, it looks like there is a pully/gear mechanism set into the wall on the north/south side of this lift, and they seem to be turning somwhat quickly. There are ropes set into the side of the wall that are moving. A knowledge (engineering) check could give some information about the consequences of various actions.
The "lift floor" is already 10' below this 2nd floor office level. The lift is in a 10' x 10' space, but is not obviously attached to the walls. There are no buttons or simple mechanisms which would demonstrate how to stop it simply.
PCs on the second floor could jump on as it descends if they want, taking the appropriate damage/penalties. If they do not this round, it will be substantially further away.

Disable Device, pick a lock, Mutagen, masterwork tools, guidance: 1d20 + 22 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 22 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 30
Disable Device, pick a lock, Mutagen, masterwork tools, guidance: 1d20 + 22 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 22 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 31
Are you kidding me?! Let's try rolling some Inspiration.
Inspiration #1: 30 + 1d6 ⇒ 30 + (4) = 34
Inspiration #2: 31 + 1d6 ⇒ 31 + (2) = 33
And now Gallant Inspiration if Vera accedes...
Gallant Inspiration #1: 34 + 2d4 - 1 ⇒ 34 + (4, 1) - 1 = 38
Gallant Inspiration #2: 33 + 2d4 - 1 ⇒ 33 + (2, 4) - 1 = 38
Yikes, I did not expect that to be such a resource drain. If you all would rather just let it ride, Vera can reject the Gallant Inspiration and I'll just have two failures.

Olenna, Yazi, and Vera descend to the 1st floor, and another door appears in the same place as before - but the lift continues down and the door passes them. Whatever mechanism is powering this thing, Olenna is only able to get it disabled with a little work. By this time, the lift appears to be about 25' below the surface, in everyone's estimation. Olenna has successfully "jammed it" somehow, but seemingly that's all. It won't move again without effort here, as Olenna nimbly pops out a gear from each side, stripping the lift of any capacity for mobility.
A moment passes, then another. The only sound they hear is that of their own breathing. Wherever the doctor went, he's not here. Another minute or so, and it becomes clear that for better or worse, this lift is stuck. Those on the lift work a little while to find some sort of trap door or entrance to somewhere - to no avail, but the bumpy metal floor finds nothing. Another few moments, and it becomes clear that the only way in or out of this odd lift, is back the way they came, as the door on the first floor remains closed. Vera detects magic and notes that the floor itself has a faint aura of necromantic magic.
Fortunately, a grappling hook, rope, and the aid of their companions means that it only takes a few minutes of effort to climb out.
************************
Magda and Marcus move to the doorway to block another attack, but the movement downstairs fades away. They wait a little while but, whoever was coming seemingly thought the better of it, something which is confirmed when they peek downstairs and find that the Gray Maidens on the catwalk, and Kor and the other queen's physicians on the first floor seem to have vanished, as has the nurse, Brunhilde.
The hospice and the room full of varisians on the second floor are all that remain.
Seems like combat's over...
Yaziyah "Speaks For The Dead"
Yaziyah pulls herself over the lip of the shaft, then turns to offer a hand up to Olenna and Vera. "We lost him, but I think that contraption cannot be used again, for better or worse. There is at least one more floor underground."
She looks over the room where the Varisians are held. "Alright, let's get these people out of here. The ones downstairs, that's trickier. We can give them the liniment, and try to cure a few, but there are so many, and the temples are already stretched thin."
She thinks for a moment. "I can convert one room in the community center into a sick ward. And Jhonas has some basic magic that might help them."
She begins walking from bed to bed, undoing the leather straps and speaking soothing words to those conscious.

In total, there are 15 unconscious (negative Hp but stable) varisians in this smaller room, and 60 citizens downstairs. My understanding is that the priority is to help the varisians here, but none appear to be actually sick (they are instead just injured).
The one Queen’s Physician is sitting on the ground, and they look at those who are unconscious nearby without saying anything.
Varisian Exam Room
The room with the Varisians has some interesting notes, which clearly indicates why the Varisians are being studied here. A search of the notes should also reveal the fact that the church of Urgathoa is involved in the investigation, with several references of reports being “sent below to A.”
Room South of Varisian’s Examination Room
The door to this room can be opened with a similar disable device. Blood, bile, and other humors bubble away within oddly formed beakers and twisted tubes in this sizable laboratory. Any wall space left in view between cabinets or over-laden bookshelves is covered by worn parchments depicting magnified aspects of human anatomy in grisly detail—many pierced with pins and flags like the war maps of a veteran campaigner. In the corner, a desk of elegantly carved white ash bears the image of a herd of antelope, but stains from dark chemicals and gore disfigure the once-beautiful piece.
A search of the desk uncovers Dr. Davaulus’s scattered notes on the source of some Varisians’ immunity to blood veil. This could prove useful in developing a cure, if more information could be gathered.
Downstairs - Two Rooms Had been unexplored before coming here.
Cargo Lift Room
Exiting from the main hospice area to the north leads to a small room with a door in the northwest corner. One can surmise that this door leads to the cargo lift “shaft” that was spied from inside the shaft. Several cubbies and wooden lockers line the walls of this small workroom. Four rickety chairs surround a water-damaged table. The door can be forced open or mechanically opened, and one sees that it does lead to the metal floor of the shaft some 25’ below. There is a hidden “button” of some sort on the wall nearby, behind a panel, and a careful search of the room upstairs finds a similar button behind a similar panel. Pressing the button seems to do nothing. It would appear Olenna has disabled the mechanical part of the lift device.
Loading Dock
The scent of exotic wood and sawdust fills this maze of barrels and crates. A web of ropes and pulleys crisscrosses the ceiling; from one thick cable hangs a net of barrels suspended nearly twenty feet above the splinter-scattered floor below. Three great wooden doors stand in the northern wall, while leather flaps lead to the south and east. These crates and containers house the remains of the legitimate Arkona importing venture that once occupied the entire building.
The majority of the containers are empty. In the southwest corner of the bay stand a number of empty cages and crates for transporting animals, many bearing the names and origins of the exotic creatures once held within, names such as “Three Breaths Viper— Mwangi Expanse,” “Emperor Cobra (Eggs)—Vudra,” and “Toad Shrew—uncharted island. With some effort and time, one could gather up the expensive Vudran imports that are here, seemingly abandoned and unowned, for a little bit of money.

"Thanks, Yaziyah," says Vera at the offered hand helps her out of the cargo lift shaft--she's most certainly visible as the magics wear off.
Vera wished she could help the Varisians, but is glad to hear they are stable and recovering. She focuses her immediate attention on the room describing what is being done to the Varisians:
Varisian Exam Room
The room with the Varisians has some interesting notes, which clearly indicates why the Varisians are being studied here. A search of the notes should also reveal the fact that the church of Urgathoa is involved in the investigation, with several references of reports being “sent below to A.”
As the party finds the notes about Urgathoa and A, Vera recalls something that might be relevant. "We found an unholy book of Urgathoa on that shipwreck, and Ishani showed us where the name Urgathoa was crossed out and replaced with the name "Andaisin." And now they're talking about Varisians "sent below to A"? Can't be a coincidence. Andaisin has to be the mastermind behind this plague!"
Yaziyah "Speaks For The Dead"
Yaziyah searches for Ruan among the Varisians.
"So these aren't doctors at all! They are cultists! No wonder they all fled - but what of the Grey Maidens? I would have expected them to confront us, arrest us... something!" The Shoanti stops, hand hovering above the brow of a middle-aged Varisian woman. "Perhaps they went to get reinforcements, in which case we should hurry and get these people out."
She nods at the papers found so far. "And the queen needs to know what is going on here. These false doctors need to answer for what they did to the people of this city."
She finishes healing the woman, then drinks a vial of liniment before heading to the hospice downstairs. It was impossible to choose, there were so many sick and in need here, but she could only do so much. In the end, she picks a young girl, a mature man and an older woman.
Remove disease: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Remove disease: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Remove disease: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Heal check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
As she works, Yaziyah mutters, "Who thought a warehouse was a good idea for a hospital? There's no ventilation here!" As the girl begins to regain her natural colour, the Shoanti addresses her. "Alright, listen to me. You need to get out of here. Do you have family? Friends? If not, there's a place where you can go in Old Korvosa. And keep as clean as you can, wash your hands with water and soap and stay away from sick people."
She returns to the group upstairs, sighing heavily. "There is not much that I can do for those below, but the place is very unhealthy for them. We need to get everyone out of there. I'll speak with Jhonas and see how many beds we can set up at the community center."
Olenna Tucca
After stopping the lift and then climbing back out, with no Dr. Davaulus to show for it and most of the suspects having fled the scene leaving dozens of ill in the lurch, Olenna is angry. Underneath her breath (as she begins poring through the doctor's notes), she begins uttering a stream of words in a language that the rest of the party doesn't understand. The words themselves are quite pretty and might be recognizable as Elven if you have spent any time around elves, but the venom with which they are uttered makes it clear that the lamplighter is uttering a tremendous string of curses. She seems so focused on the evidence left behind that she barely seems to hear what the rest of the party is saying whenever they come into or out of the room.
Eventually, however, she does stop someone as they flit by. "I need to send for someone else from the Guard," she says, looking frazzled. "I'm cataloguing this evidence, but I can't do all of it myself. And we already have suspects in the wind, along with evidence of further activities occurring below this building."
She sighs, wringing her hands through her hair and looking stressed out. Her mutagen was making it harder to concentrate as her body was far more ready for action than anything else. "Getting these people out and safe is obviously our first priority. But if I can convince the Field Marshal to help, then maybe we can process the rest of this more quickly. I'm going to have so much paperwork to do today..."
Olenna wants to send for more of the Guard, but she also doesn't want to leave yet. Ideally we could have eyes on the building in case anyone else tries to come in or leave, and some clear, systematic cataloguing of everything in here. She'll also help take care of people as she can, but she meant it when she said that she is no expert in medicine.
Vera Esmeranda
As she continues to digest the horror of this place, Vera is immensely troubled, as she continues venting to her companions. "The ship, the plague doctors, it must all an elaborate scheme to spread plague, not contain it! And I bet the studies of the poor Varisians were probably meant to make the plague more infectious, not less!"
She turns to Olenna. "You're the most useful member of the Guard we've met in a while. Miss Cressida hasn't been able to work directly on these things," she notes, comfortably using the Field Marshal's given name. "I don't know for sure if that'll change. Maybe the Church of Abadar could help--I do know someone . . ." Vera bites her lip and glances over at Magda, anticipating more teasing.
Vera eventually goes over to the unconscious plague doctors and grey maiden(s) and unmasks them. She wanted to see the faces behind these terrible crimes.
Magda "Magpie" Vasiliu
Magda misses Vera's mention of 'someone' as she is healing the mass of patients, talking to them softly as they come back to consciousness, and looking for their wayward musician.

Mags gets the victims to tell her who they are and where their family might be. "We'll get you back to them, don't worry none."
GM Litejedi
After a few moments of questioning, it becomes apparent that Ruan is not present here. The Varisians boggle but nod at Magda appreciatively. All seem to have a home to get to, and offer to get themselves to said homes if the party doesn’t need them any more. It’s obvious that none have blood veil, even with a cursory inspections. Some seem sore, but the magical healing has seemingly mended their stares almost completely.

Vera removes the masks of the queens physicians and sees human men of different backgrounds, all a little sweaty. They look like they have led hard lives. The conscious one doesn’t react when the mask is removed but he does resist slightly - the process of removal is not simple and it seems he had an airtight seal. When she looks at him, he looks back as if she is a curious specimen in a jar, but continues not to talk.
The gray maidens, on the other hand - are each women, as seemed likely from their names. Their hair is short-cropped and while obviously strong and fit to a level that rivals Marcus, we’re also at some point, strikingly attractive. At one point because it’s clear that whatever training they’ve undergone has taken a substantial physical toll. Deep scars are obvious on their faces, one has an ear missing, and the other appears to have suffered some sort of burn on the side of hers.

The girl is still weak but thankful, and holds on tightly to Yazi, ”my parents live in highbridge.” She notes, with a vague description of where. She still has ability damage, and I assume she will be evacuated soon from the hospice. Let me know otherwise. Per above, it remains risky within the main hall.

[ooc]Who intends to ask Ishani and Kroft for help? Where are the PCs discussing this?
Magda "Magpie" Vasiliu
After the last sleeper is woken up and talked to, the half orc girl stops next to lamp hair as she talks about Kroft. Despite her feelings about the head guard, she knows she is probably best for things like this. "I can go get her." Mags offered "The city'll get me there quicker than anyone."
