Does it seem that other things are getting bigger as well, or is it only the mushrooms? I.e., are the mushrooms getting bigger, or are we getting smaller?

That's not really that bad. Wait until I start eating the mushrooms, then you'll see some serious paranoia.

"He already had a third leg, did he, sire Herrick?" Malthus awkwardly laughs.

When there is a point where the increasing size of the mushrooms becomes apparent, Jawn will pause long enough to cast detect magic, seeing if there is an obvious cause for the difference.

No magic is detected by Jawn as you start moving the group around the over sized mushrooms.

No magic is detected by Jawn as you start moving the group around the over sized mushrooms. Doing your best to keep clear of the mushrooms you make it less than ten steps when you hear an ear piercing sound SHRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEE! that seems to originate from one of the larger mushrooms.

Herrick smiles wickedly. "Well, according to his wife, he did."

Hearing the screaming mushrooms, Herrick grabs the mule's lead and begins coaxing it forward.

"Come on, let's get away from these screaming plants as quickly as possible before they attract something big!"

He then urges everyone to move as quickly as possible down the path.

Not waiting to see what the sounds from the mushrooms will attract the party races around the gigantic mushroom stalks mindful that they might be already too late to escape danger.

With the mule whinnying as it dragged along less than half a minute has passed when you hear something come crashing towards you. A large feral snarl echoes within marshes and whatever it is you are sure it has your trail.

Cole looks back worriedly his legs not able to keep up with the pace of the rest of the party, "What we gonna do?" his breath is heavy as the labour of running across the soft ground tires him out even more.

Once again a loud snarl is heard in the background. This time closer. The mule sensing danger begins to whinny even more and it would bolt if not for Herrick holding tightly on its reins.

Does Jawn recognize the snarl sound? Perhaps from one of the menageries back in the city?

To quote the final words of the martyred Saint Jerome of Remballo... "Oh shit!"

He looks around, sobering then gets an eager mad glint in his eye as he raps out a command with a practiced confidence.

Some of us hide... I'll stand here with the Mule and help draw it in and then you hit it from the sides and rear! Quickly!

Not sure if that's smart but he's a military man... he has some experience in this. Using the cleric/healer as bait? That's his stupidity but overconfidence coming through

He prepares himself to pray and steps back a few steps to try to make a good sized pocket to have the enemy step into.

Will I have a round or two before the critter comes?

As Gilhaut calls upon his deity to bless and protect him and his two companions a creature emerges from the brush throwing about anything in it's path.

The creature stands at least 9 feet tall with arms are too long for its large, lanky body. The dark green tint hide of the creature makes for good camouflage but even at this distant the hide almost seems rubbery.

Its black eyes center on Gilhaut and Nesserin as they standing there waiting. With a large snarl that seems to make the ground shake it rushes at them with reckless abandon.

Jak and Jawn you are up.

Does Jawn know that the beastie is?

WWttW PC slides | Player's guide | ♦ |Ghosts 5e PC slides

Both Herrick and Jawn recognize the creature to be a troll. Creatures such as these are deadly both for their ravenous appetite and for their reckless ferocity. They have an uncanny ability to regenerate wounds rather quickly even being able to regrow limbs.

Their greatest fear is fire and acid which they canmot regenerate from.

Recognizing the fearsome terror for what it is, Jawn acts quickly. He moves in closer until the troll is at the edge of the range of the spell he is planning. Jawn hisses the spell and spreads his fingers wide, causing a gout of flame to burst forth.

Casting burning hands, 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1) = 12 fire damage, reflex save for half. He has to get within 15' of it to hit it with the spell.

Cant he move, action, move to get into position? Pretty sure 5e allows that

Update: Yeeeah, I see the problem - best he can do is either change spell or move from behind us and wait... unless he wants to go Mano y Mano against a now burnt and pissed off troll :)

In-character he can just shout out that he needs a clear lane to the troll. The rest of us then could do our best to clear out.

Jak's arrow strikes the troll squarely in the chest causing the troll to snarl at bowman. Its attention turned away, Jawn quickly strikes the troll with an icy ray. You watch a thin sheet of ice freeze over the troll's left shoulder and arm. Instinctively the creature flings its arm about breaking up the ice, but in the process slowing it down.

As it runs towards the group you can watch as Jak's lodged arrow pops out and the wound has almost fully closed up.

DM Screen:

Wis save vs Hideous Laughter: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

Herrick moves to swing his sword but instead finds himself stumbling towards the troll after tripping over an overgrown root. His blade comes nowhere even close to hitting the troll. Nesserin attacks next keeping his shield close to his body. He aims for the troll's midsection but ungainly troll moves quicker than he thought possible. The blade whistles as it cuts through the air.

As is Gilhaut's nature the priest rushes foolhardy ahead swinging once and then twice at the troll. The first swing misses, but the second swing cleaves off a chunk of flesh from the troll's thigh.

Not wanting to see how the troll will retaliate Malthus tells the troll a joke with a spell interwoven within the words. Malthus delivers the punchline and for a moment it seems as if the troll stops all its doing and just stands there. Then you hear softly at first, "hah hah hah! Hah hah hah! HAH! HAH! HAH!" within a heartbeat the troll is on the ground rolling about laughing uncontrollably.

Jak and Jawn you are up. Jak if you want to you can choose another action otherwise I will use your attack roll. Any damage gives the troll a chance to break the effects of the enchantment. I've given you the details of Malthus' spell. It will have a chance to break the spell at the end of it's turn this round.

Hideous Laughter:

At the end of each of its turns, and each time it takes damage, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. The target has advantage on the saving throw if it’s triggered by damage. On a success, the spell ends.

Jawn steps closer to the troll, but not too close. He stretches out a hand and releases a gout of flame. While it only covers half of the massive troll, he hopes it will speed its ultimate demise.

Moved on the map. Casting burning hands. It fills the square just south of Gilhaut, the southern two squares of the troll, and the several unoccupied squares south of the troll. Damage 3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6) = 17, dexterity save will make it half damage.
