The Dragon's Demand

Hello everybody! This is the discussion thread. Please feel free to use this thread for any out of character discussions, strategizing star ship combat roles, or anything else.

Sovereign Court

The Dragon's Demand

Hello, welcome to the discussion thread. This will be my first Play by Post GMing experience, so please bear with me if technical issues arise.

That being said, here is what I would like from you as a player:

Player Expectations
Basically I have two basic expectations from players. First, post regularly (generally I will be happy with one post per day) and if you think you won't be able to post in awhile please let me know. Second, I want everyone to have fun and to be fun. Use your post to make your character come to life and to drive the action forward.

Basic information
Starfinder Society number:
Player Name: (You can submit an alias or send it to me through private message if you'd like)
Character Name:
Faction slotted:

In addition, I would like everyone to answer a few questions about your character:
Why did your character chose to become a Starfinder?
What the first impression that you think most people would have if they met your character?
What is the most interesting/powerful/personal favorite thing that your character is able to do?

Hello!
I can post 1/day, and will give notice if I am afk.
I hope I'll help have fun (and will strive to do so!), and am sure I'll enjoy myself.

Starfinder Society number: 101218-701
Player Name: Eric Collins (Eric Collins - France on the Paizo boards)
Character Name: Pangea-Alpha
Faction slotted: Acquisitives
Day Job (if any): Professor +11
Current Fame/Reputation with all factions: none
Current XP: 2

Why did your character chose to become a Starfinder?
Pangea did not really choose to become a Starfinder.
It is an android, made by PANGEA, who have strong ties to the Acquisitives and the Starfinder Society. It is usual for the Starfinder Society to train the PANGEA androids.

What the first impression that you think most people would have if they met your character?
[ooc]That Alpha is simply a cold calculating droid.

What is the most interesting/powerful/personal favorite thing that your character is able to do?
As an Android with a built in but independent IA, Alpha loves to talk about souls and robots and what makes one exist.

Note: I have to update my character sheet.

Current Fame/Reputation with all factions: Wayfinders (8 reputation), Exo-guardians (5 reputation), Second Seekers (Jadnura) (1 reputation)
Current XP: 6

In addition, I would like everyone to answer a few questions about your character: Answering these for Vindler, since he's the one you'll see
Why did your character chose to become a Starfinder?
Vindler has long admired the work of the Starfinder Society, but it wasn't until he was part of the live audience for an episode of Live Exploration Extreme! featuring a team of Starfinder agents that he decided he had to join the cause. Of course, that was also when he met...her...

What the first impression that you think most people would have if they met your character?
Something doesn't seem quite right about Vindler. At first glance, he looks like a typical dwarf. Long beard, short, stocky build. But there's something unusual about his eyes, like they're waiting for something terrible to happen. Plus, there's an odd aura around him like you'd feel in a hospital or a funeral parlor.

What is the most interesting/powerful/personal favorite thing that your character is able to do?
This is my first time playtesting the Vanguard, so that's largely still up in the air, but I'm definitely excited to try out the rules for shields.

Faction slotted: Wayfinders
Day Job (if any): N/A
Current Fame/Reputation with all factions: Current Fame 11 / Wayfinders Rep 11
Current XP: 6

Why did your character chose to become a Starfinder?
He wanted a chance to get off Akiton and see the rest of the worlds. He loves to explore uncharted areas and making first contact, even though he is not very diplomatic. (it's a work in progress)

What the first impression that you think most people would have if they met your character?
That he seems disinterested to what is going on. If he is in a well populated place, he seems irritable and likely quiet, mostly due to him biting his tongue. He relaxes the further from civilization he gets.

What is the most interesting/powerful/personal favorite thing that your character is able to do?
Most likely the trained for trouble ability. Able to make an untrained ID check on certain certain checks.

The Dragon's Demand

I'm going to be out of town this weekend. I will have my phone and tablet with but I won't be writing any long posts. If you are able to, please use this time to polish up your characters and post something in Discussion and Gameplay. I will get familiar with your characters and read everything posted. On Sunday night (or Monday morning) I will post the mission briefing and we will jump right into the first quest.

There is a starship combat later in the scenario, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to solidify what roles everyone wants to take beforehand. Unless someone has an alternative ship available through a boon, you will be flying a tier 4 Pegasus.

Tier 4 Pegasus stats:

STARFINDER SOCIETY PEGASUS TIER 4
Medium explorer
Speed 10; Maneuverability good (turn 1); Drift 1
AC 13; TL 14
HP 65; DT —; CT 13
Shields light 60 (forward 20, port 15, starboard 15, aft 10)
Attack (Forward) light particle beam (3d6)
Attack (Port) laser net (2d6)
Attack (Starboard) light laser cannon (2d4)
Attack (Turret) light particle beam (3d6)
Power Core Pulse Red (175 PCU); Drift Engine Signal Basic;
Systems advanced medium-range sensors, crew quarters
(good), mk 2 duonode computer, mk 3 armor, mk 4 defenses;
Expansion Bays cargo hold, escape pods, science lab,
tech workshop
Modifiers +2 to any two checks per round, +4 Computers, +1
Piloting; Complement 4–7

In addition to the ship roles, there are also the two +2 bonuses from the ship computer. I think it usually helps to assign these bonuses before the combat, because otherwise its easy to forget that you get them.

Wayfinders

Male NG Human xenoarchaeologist operative (starfinder forerunner) 3 | SP 7/21 HP 22/22 | RP 3/3 | EAC 14; KAC 15 | Fort +4; Ref +5; Will +3 | Init: +8 | Perc: +8, SM: +8 | Speed 40ft | Trained for Trouble: 2/2 | Active conditions: None

JJ can fit pretty much any role with the exception being science officer.

Piloting would be his best at +10, +11 from with the ship bonuses prior to any other bonuses.

Gunnery Check would be at a +5 prior to any bonuses.

Engineering at +7

Captaining....not really something JJ would do.

As for the other +2 checks. One should most likely going to piloting and the other to the main gunner.

Male Dwarf Death-touched Vanguard 4 | HP 38/38 SP 52/52 | RP 6/6 | EAC 19 (20); KAC 21 (22) | Fort +8; Ref +7; Will +2 | Init: +3 | Perc: +9 (+11 Stonecunning); Darkvision 60ft | Speed 30ft | Active conditions: None.

Vindler is pretty restricted in Starship combat. He'll be a proficient gunner (+7), but isn't really trained to do anything else.

Thinking about it now, I'm realizing that Vanguards aren't build exceptionally well to be versatile participants in starship combat. They don't have engineering, computers, or piloting as class skills, and though they do have diplomacy and intimidate as class skill, charisma seems like it would be such a low priority stat for the class that even a half-way decently build solarian or envoy would blow them out of the water as a captain. Seems like, unless you really build toward it, the class is pretty much locked in as a gunner.

(BTW - Let me know if I get obnoxious with my comments on the playtest class. I can keep them to myself if it's preferred.)

Why did your character chose to become a Starfinder?
Istorvir is a scholar from both the Arcanamarium and Qarabat Universities. When the scoured star event happened he realized that he could be a great asset in the recovery of the organization, as well as the organization benefitting him with research opportunities.

What is the first impression that you think most people would have if they met your character?
Istorvir's most notable quality is his tendency to jump on teaching moments. As a professor himself, he dances on the line between know-it-all and helpful knowledge.

What is the most interesting/powerful/personal favorite thing that your character is able to do?
His ability to solve almost all problems with magic. (I'm trying to pull off the full-caster feel)

I will say, I laughed openly when I saw the difference in durability between myself and Vindler. I have always wanted to play an 8 Con character. And it seems it is more difficult to die in Starfinder so, seemed a good a time as any.

Sovereign Court

The Dragon's Demand

Yeah, Vindlér looks like a beast.

I just wanted to let you know, this scenario is odd in that you only slot personal boons. You don't even slot a faction boon for this scenario; instead you just add the fame and reputation to one of the factions you have a boon for. I'm not sure why its designed that way; it might be that its a quest series and the writers didn't want to confuse new players with the whole boon system. But yeah, if you have any boons that affect your stats, please factor that in.

Sovereign Court

The Dragon's Demand

In regards to starship roles, it looks like you probably won't have a captain due to the party layout. What I'm seeing is that JJ Oaklie would make the most sense being the pilot. Istovir - Science Officer
Vindler will be your primary gunner. Which leaves Pangea and Saryn. Both of you guys would be fine in the position of engineer or secondary gunner.

You also have some bonuses from the ships onboard computer which you should factor into the checks. This includes two +2 bonuses to any two skill checks per round. I generally think its a good idea to assign these right away, because otherwise it can be pretty to forget about them.

I did post some stats and the battle map on the slide. I went with arrow icons instead of pictures of the ships on the map because its easier to tell which direction they are facing. Badguys are green, the Loreseeker is red.

For the piloting "initiative" checks, I will be rolling those for both pilots and announcing who goes first/last. You'll still be responsible for rolling the piloting checks for any stunts you try to pull. On tabletop I usually remind pilots that they have the option to fly defensively for an extra +2 AC. For PbP; this is going to be your only reminder.

Just to keep things moving, I might bot people more often. I will generally try to do something tactically sound, but if you have your own botting preferences, please let them be known.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Yep, definitely stealing this layout as well. Bravo good sir.

As for the +2 checks, I would always add them to the gunning checks. It is alway better to have a better chance to hit.

Unless you're in combat or doing something that is very time sensitive, like diffusing a bomb, you should feel to take 10 if you'd like. I actually like take 10 as a rule. Sovereign Court

The Dragon's Demand

Thank you for botting the pilot, Pangea-Alpha. Just one think to note; the character John Jospeh Oaklie is still piloting the ship even if the player isn't available to post. You had a lucky roll so its kind of a moot point, but in the future if someone needs to move for the pilot, you can add his normal modifiers to the roll.

Piloting is a little weird, because normally I would just do the botting myself but for deciding the placement of your ship, I don't think its fair for to do that. Especially if you have to go first.

I also just want to give you a reminder about the asteroids on this map. I think I mentioned it already, but it bears repeating that they do block line of sight, so you can't shoot weapons through them. Something to keep in mind because it is a tactical feature of this map that can be used to your advantage.
