Can I just throw this out here? I've been reading through the "Scorched Lands" game some of you folks are in. I'm about half-way through what you have so far.
Holy. $#!t.
WOW.
I am humbled and awed by the caliber of players and writers we have in this game. Also, challenged and excited. This is gonna rock. SO hard.
I can't wipe the big-assed grin off of my face.

Huge thanks for all the Russian / Romanian ideas. I didn't want to go with the standard Tolkien thing, and going Japanese/Chinese felt wrong for the Dwarves, but I really dig this idea. I'll see what I can come up with from it!

Scorched Lands is such a blast. I hadn't met any of the players in that game before and I think I'm now in 5 or 6 different games with at least one of them. I think it's one of the coolest things that like, as large as this forum is, when you find great people to play with, it's easy to play with them in multiple games. I'm super excited for this, too. It should be quite the all star cast. :)
Hmm. Any interest in Ralfael and "Iroh" going back a ways? I can see him trying to keep Ralf on track as a kid. And after the incident that awakened his latent powers, as the only healing-capable person he knows Ralf could easily have sought out "Iroh" in an effort to understand.
Just realised I never acknowledged this! Yes, that's definitely a thing that can have happened. I'm still working on the backstory, but it's definitely an idea that I like. How long ago are you thinking of it having been?
Ralf Tergsvor
Jae, that's pretty much how I feel. When Mal kicked the game off with her morning awakening and character vignette I was like, "Whoa... this is worthy of a novel!" Everyone in that game has maintained that same high standard, and I can't tell you how great it is to be some small part of that.
(If you haven't gotten to the "Arise" scene yet... geez, that will send shivers down your spine...)
I've been fortunate beyond belief in falling in with some incredible RPers. Good people who were willing to take a chance on a PbP newbie and welcome him into their fold. I truly feel honored (and your "humbled" is a good word, too) when one of them invites me into a game as has happened here. As you obviously are, I am so looking forward to this!
For your amusement, here's a failed Diplomacy roll (and role!) from a game I lucked into that's well over 3,500 posts and still going strong (not my character):
On the way he gives a little eyebrow lift and a wink to the Waitress.
Diplomacy 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Picking leaves and sticks out of his beard, Fener says "I have been spending a lot of time alone in the forest..."
Ralf Tergsvor
Yes, that's definitely a thing that can have happened. I'm still working on the backstory, but it's definitely an idea that I like. How long ago are you thinking of it having been?
Well, Ralf's just 22, so it can only go back so far. :o) I'm thinking there are two parts to it: the first meeting and the reunion.
Given the nomadic Varisian/Omani/gypsy theme, the caravan could have set up near you at any point during Ralf's childhood and hung around long enough for the two of you to meet. Maybe like the Iroh "mugging" scene, you caught him doing something bad but set him straight instead of turning him in. That would've been quite a shock to someone more used to his entire clan being run out of town. So even as closed as a tribe is, I can see him eventually coming to think of you as clan folk (the ersatz "uncle" angle).
Too, if the caravan stayed a long while because the pickin's were good, it makes sense that he'd've picked up some of the dour fatalistic Dwarven outlook, which could explain aspects of his gloominess.
All that'd be mostly deep backstory stuff, and I'm cool with your structuring that however works best for your guy's tale. More recent events need a bit more focus.
When young-adult Ralf nearly cracked his head open and freed his latent psionic abilities, he'd've returned to Drakr and sought you out. Not just because you're a healer; that "seeking balance" thing of yours dovetails nicely with how a Vitalist shuffles health and injury around to keep a group of people alive and functioning. Plus the anger in Ralf started darksiding him (he is in fact a Sadist archetype, meaning he can push pain and even gain strength from another's death). That could easily have shaken him up enough to want some guidance. If you stopped him from going bad early on as I postulated above, you'd naturally be the person to whom he'd gravitate.
When did your guy decide to align with the RHC? Ralfael could have found you around that time and, given his concern over Danor, seen that as a multiple-bird-killing stone.
Or we could do nick-of-timing: Ralf shows up in your town/enclave asking for you, and is informed you've gone off to Risur to join the good fight. He beats feet after you, eventually catching up with you somewhere along the way. More or less "dragged along" to Risur by circumstances, but realizing by the time he gets there that the Constabulary makes the most sense for him as well.
Either way, he's not going to be as obnoxiously clueless as Zuko (or hotheaded as Doc or reckless as Kwin), so you won't have to keep him out of trouble and on track as Iroh must. :o) The bond of respect will simply be there, and he'll give more weight to your words and opinions than anyone else's.
Thoughts?

Okay, we've got 4 PCs ready.
Anthony (Anthony or Tony?)- fighter techno-whiz who has been working as a consultant to the RHC, Technologist theme
Aziel- tiefling gunslinger former Danoran soldier new to the RHC, Gunsmith theme
Jaelynn- elf (posing as a wood elf, so shhh!) arcanist deductive investigator with a year of experience on the on the RHC, Vekeshi Mystic theme
Ralf- vitalist antisocial street performer (best three-word description ever) new to the RHC, Docker theme
We've got a dwarven warpriest gentle philosopher badass and a possible young newbie swashbuckler coming in. Looks like a good mix of Backgrounds, themes, and combat abilities.
If you're interested we could open up Gameplay to IC posting for anybody who has their appearance/personality nailed down, to get into character- nothing exciting, maybe just sitting at your desks shooting the s!@& and waiting for the briefing to start.
I don't want to pressure anyone to rush their character creation process, I'm just about ready to start when the PCs are.

Oh you're way too kind. :) Everyone really has been doing a fantastic job. I was upset when Ira left - he gave me a whole new perspective into playing a Cleric.
That all sounds good, Ralf. I think given that Dwarves live considerably longer, I'll have already been "old" by the time we met. I'd rather have you be the reason for me joining the RHC rather than the other way, but I can make it work either way. I should have a rough background ready today.
And Anthony: We were all new at one point, I've only been on here for a bit over a year.

Just a note:
"Wood Elves" are by far the most common elf in this world (at least for elf females, anyway), from what I've read. "Wood Elf" is the name given to the "standard" Pathfinder Elf. "High Elves" use the Lightbringer alternate racial trait.
This AP was originally designed for D&D 4E, so they had to do some quick-and-dirty mods to the fluff (and crunch) to make it work in Pathfinder. In this world, Aasimar are the equivalent of 4E Devas, not Pathfinder Aasimars, and "High Elves" seem to be the equivalent of 4E Eladrin (a branch of elf who have a closer connection to the Fey than to nature, essentially).
Aside from the coloration and some racial abilities (and the fact that High Elf females are exceedingly rare), there ain't much difference between them and Wood Elves in this world.
Jae isn't really working all that hard to hide her race, and will admit to it if confronted about it. But since High Elf females *are* so rare, are almost completely unexpected in dangerous occupations (including/especially the RHC) because of that rarity (and because all elves seem to be semi-sorta anti-technology?), and almost all have silver or gold or white hair, Jae's technique of keeping her hair auburn or orange or red or brown most of the time is usually enough for people to just assume she's a wood elf. Ironically, when she turns it jet black, people are more likely to suspect she's a High Elf, because that ain't a natural color for elves, so when people see it, their minds leap to "why change it?" and tend to see her High Elf features a bit more clearly.
Anyhoo, that's basically a long-winded way of saying "don't worry *too much* about hiding Jae's race. She's not actively telling people she's a Wood Elf, just looks like one (most of the time), and lets people assume.
Also, I'm down with a scene or two with Jaelynn. I actually have been sketching out a scene in my head of her in her apartment, that I could get done by later today, most likely.

Mal's vignette made me extra sad I wasn't a part of that game, so when a spot opened up, I can't say I was upset. There may have been a small jig involved. It's already one of my most favorite games ever. I feel spoiled, getting to play with so many awesome people!
And now nearly all the best RPers I know are in this game.
So. Excited.

Any race with a skill boost as a racial ability should replace it with an alternate racial trait.
Looking at the Dwarf more in depth as I make my profile, and I have an issue with the traits. Several of them are worthless to me, but more than that, a few of them (and their replacements) all give Skill boosts.
- Greed: Dwarves gain a +2 racial bonus on Appraise checks made to determine the price of non-magical goods that contain precious metals or gemstones.
- Stonecunning: Dwarves gain a +2 bonus on Perception checks to notice unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors located in stone walls or floors. They receive a check to notice such features whenever they pass within 10 feet of them, whether or not they are actively looking.
I am wondering if it might be okay for me to replace those two with two of the following? These were taken from the Oread / Undine Races, and the RP cost is the same, so it ought to be decently balanced.
- Energy Resistance: Undines have cold resistance 5.
- Spell-Like Ability (Sp): Undines can use hydraulic push 1/day (caster level equals the undine's level).
- Granite Skin Rocky growths cover the skin of oreads with this racial trait. They gain a +1 racial bonus to natural armor.
Cards on the table, Energy Resistance would be nice for the "zone of cold" that I can create as an Eschatologist, but I realise that may be considered too much metagaming. Granite Skin may be more useful anyway since it would put me at a whoppingly pathetic 15 AC. Hydraulic Push just sounds fun.
Ralf Tergsvor
I was upset when Ira left - he gave me a whole new perspective into playing a Cleric.
I, too, mourned his loss. Ira was freaking awesome! How many times do you find a PC who doesn't just handwave a spell but literally preaches a sermon to invoke his god's power?
I'd rather have you be the reason for me joining the RHC rather than the other way...
No problem, that'll fit okay. Ralf got a strongly negative impression of Danor thanks to the bad element's incursion into the Malice Lands ("These wartorn lands tend to become havens for criminals who cross into their neighboring lands to pillage and plunder"). Never mind that A) it's likely an unfair impression not representative of the country itself, and B) his own people could rightfully be described much the same way.
So his "Something needs to be done about the Danor threat" goes back a ways, and strengthening Risur is the sensible way to keep Danor controlled. That surely would've come out in their discussions, and with the dwarven fatalistic outlook plus "Iroh's" philosophy of balance, I can easily see him adopting that view.
Heck, maybe y'all's conversations eventually led you both to realize joining the RHC was the best way to keep things on track! Anyway, feel free to spin it however works best for your backstory.
And Anthony: We were all new at one point, I've only been on here for a bit over a year.
Same here; I just checked, and my first-ever PbP post was on September 8th.
And for what it's worth, I still consider myself "new."
YoricksRequiem
If I remember right, the Eschatology power doesn't let you mitigate the damage to yourself in any way...
Oh! You're right, good call. So the Spell-ability and Granite Skin would be preferable. Though cold resistance would still fit the character since I'm likely to pick up a couple of Cold/Water spells.
karlprosek

Now I feel like I should go read this Scorched Lands game you guys are talking about.
Clebsch73
Greetings gamers! I got the go-ahead via Ralf to post with this campaign. I've known him for many years and role played with him in a variety of settings and know that he's a great player who comes up with truly unique characters that are fun to play with or moderator for. He speaks highly of all of you, so I'm looking forward to this and hoping I can match the level of play. I've been role playing since 1st edition D&D came out, so I've had a lot of experience with a lot of systems. I'm quite familiar with Pathfinder and I've read through the Zeitguist and background rules, so I'm ready to start working out a character.
That may take a few days, since I am a teacher and this is the start of a new term with me teaching a class I've never taught before, so the next few days may not leave me as much time to work on role playing as I'll have later in the week. Once the character creation work is done, I should have no problem keeping up with posts. So I'll put out some ideas I've had so far and then check back tonight after work.
After looking over the characters so far, I think I'll likely go with the following: a male human Monk Kata Master, which incorporates the panache abilities of the Swashbuckler. I'm going for someone who can be an effective fighter without toting a lot of weaponry and armor. I haven't thought out the background yet, but I'll probably focus on spy and undercover skills to make him useful as an infiltrator and spy.
As for his personality, I am still thinking on that, but first thoughts are to make him a fairly new recruit who joined in part to get the training. He's patriotic enough to embrace a role as an operative of the state, but he'll likely have to do some soul searching if/when the group begins to get assignments that seem to serve special interests more than the security of the common people. But all that is preliminary. I look forward to any comments and suggestions when I get back to this this evening. I probably won't have a character ready until maybe Friday.
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
This is just the stickler in me, and I am NOT the GM, and Karl's call is already "go ahead," but to me, Undine racial powers for a Dwarf just seem...off. Earth or Fire, I could totally see, even cold. But water just seems counter-intuitive.
I'm sorry to be raining on your concept. I don't wanna, but... Bah!
OK. Business Coaching 101 - "If you're going to point out a problem, have a solution to suggest."
Here are some alternates I'd suggest:
Granite Skin seems reasonable to me.
Rock Stepper (can 5' in difficult terrain) replaces Stonecunning.
Stone Singer replaces Stonecunning, I could see it replacing Greed, instead.
I think Relentless could also safely replace Greed or Stonecunning without being terribly unbalanced.
I could also see almost any Trait being a balanced replacement of a conditional +2 skill bonus like Greed or Stonecunning (since most Traits are in that range...).
Again, feel completely free to ignore me. I'm just tossing out ideas that seem to me to be more "Dwarf-like" than an Undine's water-affinity abilities do.
Then again, it's not terribly difficult to have the dude have some Undine blood in his lineage, either. :-)
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
Now I feel like I should go read this Scorched Lands game you guys are talking about.
See ya in a day or so. Is gooooooooddddddddd!
YoricksRequiem
I appreciate the response, Jaelynn
Let me first explain why I don't like the other options: Rock Stepper had occurred to me, because the fluff is good, but I've never seen a GM ever care about difficult terrain. Unless you're like, running across a dragon's back while it's mid-flight. Many of them simply aren't applicable to the character - Stonesinger being one of them. Weapon Familiarity is another, though nothing replaces that. And even Relentless - yes, it has mechanical value, but it doesn't fit the character. The way I see it is that Race Traits are things that apply to most Dwarves. But this character doesn't fit Greed, or most things involve Stoneworking. Maybe it means that I've chosen the wrong race, but I think it's more important to be true to the character.
Anyway! My justification for water is that the Dwarves in this world seem more geared towards Ice. The Eschatologists in general believe that the world will end in Ice. I think that it's easy to see how many Dwarves would, knowing that, spend more time learning spells related to cold and water than others. The Theme Feat actually specifically says that you do what you can to prevent it, and "You find yourself closer to death than most."
As far as fluff goes, that's aces.
There is also the notion that for a vaguely healer character in general, the idea of studying water because of the frequent correlations to it as "pure" or restorative or natural. Fire brings death and destruction - water brings life. Fire might be more applicable to the Dwarves in the sense of them being smelters and forgers, but again, that's not a Dwarf archetype that I'm particularly interested in playing, and I'd even argue that the Fire Smelter Dwarf doesn't seem right for the Eschatologist mindset. The changes that I'm suggesting of making him a somewhat atypical Dwarf will also, of course, come up in the background! He would have Drakr a number of years ago.
I'm certainly not married to the idea of Hydraulic Push, and have no problem dropping it if you still disagree. It's also not like it would be super useful at once per day - but the idea of spraying out a large stream of water just feels fitting. Anyway, I just wanted to explain my justification. Let me know what you think!
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
First, YR, you don't need to justify your choices to me, so I absolutely appreciate you taking the time to do so. :-)
Secondly, your justification makes sense to me. I'm not as on-board with your sense of water-streaming feeling fitting, but I'm also not inhabiting your character, so you'd know better than I do. The rest of it makes total sense, so who am I to say the Hydraulic Push doesn't, as well?
I've seen you write and play, so I have no doubt that you'll make it work, based on what you've said to this point.
If you wanted to be going with the Butcherian (Codex Alera) concept of water as the healing element, perhaps Hydraulic Push could be re-skinned as your character commanding the water/fluids in the enemy to move away from him (taking the rest of the body with it), rather than a massive wave of water?
But even if not, you've convinced me that you'll make it work (not that I'm all that hard to convince). ;-)
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
To be fair, Water was also the healing element in Avatar, not just the Codex of Alera. I'm not sure if it was for the exact same reasons (water in Alera let you connect with the water in a persons blood, where there seemed to be something a little more spiritual about healing with water in Avatar, the whole 'water is pure, flowing' sort of angle.)
I think its cool however you flavor it! I actually like concepts that take on a life of their own like that, that have things that just fit naturally with them. So far, everyone has presented an awesome character and your ideas are no different in being awesome!
As far as a a 'day in the life' scene, I've got an idea for one or two that I wouldn't mind trying to write! Would give me some good perspective into the head of Anthony (or Tony as some call him XD) that I could use before diving into the game proper.
karlprosek
I like seeing the thought process there, YR.
One thing of note- I do pay attention to difficult terrain. Just today, in fact, I had a PC who couldn't take a 5' step back to shoot her bow without taking an AoO so instead stayed in melee, which she doesn't like at all.
ADZ, I haven't looked at the Steamsuit Pilot PrC, but I like the idea of somebody stomping around in a Warhammer 40K Space Marine suit. So it's probably fine.
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
Cool! Is the Gameplay thread already open for us to post in?
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
Sorry, ADZ, I wasn't meaning to suggest that Codex Alera was the only source of "water as hhealing," or even that it's the concept YR is using. I was suggesting it as a possible comparable and/or reference.
I'm sure it'll all work out fine. :-)
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
I wasn't trying to rebuke you for that suggestion myself! I was pointing out that there's a lot of basis for it in fantasy. Heck, even world of warcraft does it. And I'm betting all of it stems from myths from our own past.
In a sense I was trying to back ya, not wack ya. (Sorry, I couldn't resist. XD)
YoricksRequiem
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin wrote:Cool! Is the Gameplay thread already open for us to post in?Should be, unless there's something special I need to do to open it up to players.

Yup! Just tried to post and I wasn't able to.

If you guys want to write up 'day in the life' type scenes and put them in the Gameplay tab, be my guest.
Before doing this, I'd like some info on the group. Are the characters part of a kind of special ops team that lives on a base somewhere unless sent out on a mission? Or are they more like undercover operatives who maintain a civilian cover and get briefed on missions via a handler or by meeting in some secret meeting place? Or is it something else?
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
Clebsch,
Have you had a chance to read the Player's Guide yet? We're basically the FBI and Homeland Security all rolled into one. With some NSA and MI6 mixed in.
We have a boss, and a headquarters building. There are uniforms, but also plain-clothes assignments.
Kinda like the RCMP in Canada. Federal cops, with prestige, but who have to work with local cops, too, because we don't necessarily have the manpower to do everything ourselves.
karlprosek

All PCs are constables in the Royal Homeland Constabulary, which is about halfway between being an FBI or MI-5 agent and being a police detective. Constables come from all walks of life to conteibute their special knowledge to investigations. For my ease of reference the PCs are members of a brand new unit called Unit 11; the group has only recently been staffed and the AP's first mission will be Unit 11 and most of the PCs' first field assignment.
There are probably dress uniforms, but PC constables are plain clothes (or whatever they want to wear). Like cops or federal agents, constables need to provide their own living arrangements. They don't need to maintain cover identities.
karlprosek
I know this is unnecessarily confusing, but I made another campaign with the same name here. This discussion thread is linked to the new campaign. I have an initial post up in that Gameplay thread I posted above. Let me know if you can see it; if you want, go ahead and dot the thread or post a prepared scene or something.
I'll mark the 'old' campaign inactive once I'm sure everybody knows what's going on.
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
I can see the the Gameplay thread as well. Question, should I spoil whatever I write in there?
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
I didn't (clearly).
But if you don't want other players knowing anything about Anthony, then yes.
Personally, I trust players to keep player knowledge and character knowledge separate. At least, when it's just character fluff.
Although, mine *is* a bit long. Sorry about that...
Jaelynn Vance-Saerpheni
Danke!
But I wasn't apologizing for the writing, so much as for not spoilering it for the sake of page space.
I gets a bit verbose, from time ta time. ;-)
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
Thats basically what I was asking myself, Jaelynn. I tend to ramble a bit with my own writing and I was wondering if I should spoil for page space. But if no one else is I don't think I will either, especially if you guys enjoy reading it! (Which you hopefully will.)

@karlprosek: I want to send you a private message, but don't see the option on your profile page. FAQ says this is either because you have not checked the option to receive PMs or you are blocking me specifically (hopefully not the latter). If this is an oversight, please check your account settings. If intentional, let us know how we can get a message to you that is not for the eyes of everyone. I have a background point I want to discuss privately. Thanks.
karlprosek
Weird. I haven't blocked anybody and am able to get PMs from other people. I sent you a message directly, let me know if you can't respond to it.
So, on a different note, I let my boss sign me up for a training, not realizing it was going to be all day for the next 2 days. Probably should've asked more questions before saying yes. So, I may be less responsive today and tomorrow than I usually am.
Ralf Tergsvor
In the process of trying to help Shane with this, we traded screenshots of your profile. In Shane's there literally is no link for PMing you or adding you to his address book.
Hmm... that's a thought. Shane, do you see a PM link on my profile? Or anyone's for that matter? Maybe it's you, not Karl.
And most honorable GM, you need to always keep in mind that bit where the Sergeant asks for a volunteer and every soldier in the line takes one step back... except for the poor slob who isn't paying attention. There's a life lesson in there. :o)
Ralf Tergsvor
Alrighty, foreign stock with a flavoring of Abbott and Costello and a dash of The Incredible Hulk and voilà: Dot Stew.
Admittedly an acquired taste for some, so please don't hate on me too much. But we wouldn't want this whole RHC thing to get too serious right out of the gate, now would we! :op
By the way, will we be switching to present tense once we exit from introductory vignettes into the story, or do we stay with past tense? I'm fine with either, just need to know which way we're going.
YoricksRequiem
Keeping consistent tense is easily my largest hurdle when writing.
I swear I'll have my character finished tonight. I'm changing jobs and it's my last week at this one, so I've been slammed with trying to bring everyone up to speed and wrap up projects (hence feeling sickly and not being around much).
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
@Yorick/Karl: Jobs are quite important! I don't think anyone hear is bothered by the fact that you have had to focus on them or will have too!
Ralf Tergsvor
Absolutely. And don't make yourself ill by pushing too hard. We've all been there and undoubtedly will be again. We understand.
Besides, this is supposed to be a fun part of your life!
Anthony Dawson Zeitlin
Also, damn you guys are good. XD (This goes to both Ralf and Jaelynn, by the way. Funny and awesome writing!)

In the process of trying to help Shane with this, we traded screenshots of your profile. In Shane's there literally is no link for PMing you or adding you to his address book.
That's really weird. And not something I can do anything about, I don't think.
And most honorable GM, you need to always keep in mind that bit where the Sergeant asks for a volunteer and every soldier in the line takes one step back... except for the poor slob who isn't paying attention. There's a life lesson in there. :o)
I am familiar with the concept, from way back. One thing they don't tell you until you join up is that NAVY is actually an acronym for Never Again Volunteer Yourself. ;) But I honestly didn't see how this thing could be more than a couple of hours, so it seemed pretty safe. That'll teach me.
Regarding tense, I naturally gravitate toward past tense, but I think every PbP on here uses present tense. If nobody has a strong preference for present tense I'll probably stick with Jaelynn and use past tense. If it's just Jae and me stuck in the past and everybody else wants present tense we'll do that.
