Male Human Sorcerer 5

KEEP PLAYING. I'M ABOUT TO WHIP OUT SOMETHING BIG. AND IT HAS THE LETTER P IN IT.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

I'm here.

Dungeon Master

Balion, a +1 Cloak of Resistance grants a +1 to all Saving Throws, not Armor Class. It also looks like you didn’t update your saves to level 3; remember to add your Constitution modifier to Fortitude, Dexterity modifier to Reflex, and Wisdom modifier to Will. Use the Ranger Level Progression Chart to look up your base saves. I think your saves should be Fort +7 Ref +5 Will +3, including the bonus from the cloak. Let me know if this doesn’t make sense.

Dungeon Master

David, to answer your question:

Squall is treated as an outsider in regard to spell immunities, and like most outsiders, there is no duality of soul and body. Squall is still vulnerable to diseases. Uncured, the end result of Zombie Rot is the death of the invalid and reanimation as a zombie, as the spell animate dead. In Squall’s case, the disease would still take effect (in Constitution damage), but it will simply kill him if it runs uncured. He would not reanimate because he would not leave a corpse behind.

For Aladdin to know this, I would require a Knowledge Planes DC 12, if you want to. Squall passed his save, so no harm done.

Male Elf Monk 2/Ninja 4

Secrets of the Grave allows you to affect undead with mind-affecting spells as if they were living, even if they are mindless. Interpreting how that works in any given situation is a case of breaking it down and a little cross-referencing. So, essentially, the class feature does three things:

1. Allows you to affect undead with mind-affecting spells
2. Allows you to affect undead with those spells as if they were living targets
3. Allows you to affect undead with those spells even if they are mindless

A little cross-reference to the undead traits in the Bestiary shows us undead's immunity to mind-affecting effects includes: charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms. But (and here, I think, is the bit you're probably after) other immunities granted by having undead traits are listed seperately, such as: death effects, disease, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, stunning, non-lethal damage, exhaustion, fatigue, etc., etc. These other immunities are nothing to do with being affected by mind-affecting spells or not.

So, to your examples:

Colour Spray normally has the potential results of unconsciousness (living things only), blindness, and / or stunning. So when out Dirge Bard casts that spell on a zombie via Secrets of the grave, we need to run down our check-list of what effects get through. The mind-affecting aspect is okay, despite the zombie being both undead and mindless, so we move on to the specific effects. Blindness immunity isn't listed anywhere under undead traits, so that effect is fine. Immunity to stunning is listed, and seperate from anything to do with being mind-affecting, so that effect of the spell does nothing. Unconsciousness immunity isn't listed (technically unconsciousness is neither a sleep effect, nor an exhaustion / fatigue or non-lethal damage effect) and the Dirge Bard gets to affect the zombie as if it were living, so the 'living targets only' clause on the spell's unconsciousness effect also doesn't apply. So the zombie can be blinded and/or KOd by the spell, but not stunned.

Dungeon Master

Is Aladdin a Dirge Bard? Unless I'm missing something, you'll need the Secrets of the Grave class ability to have your mind-affecting spells work on undead.

Edit: And sorry Bolgrith, I thought undead were immune to fear. Had the skeletal champion survived, it would've been shaken.

Male Human Ranger

So If I edit my profile picture, can I re-upload it. I want to replace the hat on Balions head with a helmet. It is not of any real importance.

Dungeon Master

Err, I don't think you can edit your pic after 10 posts.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

You can change your pic. Not your name.

Male Human Ranger

okay thanks i'll try it. Rolg is blinded but he still has eyes correct. As in he can be healed at some point right?

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

If we can get the coin and/or Bolgrith levels up enough :)

Dungeon Master

^that

Male Dwarf Cleric of Irori 5

So hey, if Netherfire wants to donate to the cause, I'm happy to level him immediately! ;D

Dungeon Master

Haha, not yet. You guys have been level 3 for like 2 days.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

2 days too long imho ;)

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Whoa whoa, it's been like weeks. WEEKS. Who cares about in game time, it's REAL TIME we care about.

Male Human Ranger

WEEEEEEEKS

Dungeon Master

Just a bit longer, nerds. While we're on the topic, it might be wise to be looking at what you get at level 4. Figure out what options you have (like where to put the stat bump, or skill points) and plan ahead so the group doesn't have to wait a week to progress the game. When making these decisions, try to keep in mind what things (such as certain skills, spells, or damage output) the party tends to rely on you for.

Dungeon Master

1d100 ⇒ 63
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 5, 5) = 17
1d12 ⇒ 12

Dungeon Master

Hey fellas. This isn't related to the combat coming up, but it's something you should know:

So far, for the fights with unimportant npcs (such as minions and random encounters), I've counted them as "dead" when they go to negative hitpoints. This will not be true for the "bosses" of this game. The bosses will fall unconscious if brought to negative hitpoints. Left alone, they will roll to stabilize. All characters can take up to their Constitution score in negative hitpoints before dying dead dead. Dead.

You haven't met too many bosses so far, and a minor one, that paladin turned skeletal champion, cannot have negative hitpoints (due to the undead type).

Anyways, that was all. Carry on. Have fun with that HOT MESS of goblins.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

No

Dungeon Master

"to snarls"

Dungeon Master

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

Still ready.

Dungeon Master

Thank you for pointing out the gauntlet/light weapon thing, Rolg. THE MORE YOU KNOW ~~~~*

Dungeon Master

My original avatar was giving me trouble. I regret nothing.

Speaking of regrets though, I almost forgot that I was going to address something I noticed in that last combat:

It is your responsibility to roll to confirm critical hits. It is not that hard to hit 'Preview' and see what you rolled. Know your weapons -some crit ranges are different from others. It is also your responsibility to roll the dice associated with your spells. Usually it is simply damage dice, but there are also duration rolls for some spells, like Color Spray. It will also save me time if you include the save type and DC for offensive spells on NPCs.

If you neglect to confirm crits, I will ignore it. If you do not roll damage or duration for spells, your spell will have no effect.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

Aye Aye Captain Hard-ass!

I like it.

Male Human Ranger

INSANITY!!!!

Dungeon Master

Just a reminder, when you roll to see what you know, it does not mean the rest of the party automatically knows it too. You are not bees.

Dungeon Master

Speaking of bees though, did you know that they communicate with pheromones? The pheromone they produce when they sting something (and die shortly after) smells like bananas to humans, but to bees it says "Oh s$@#, a bee brother just died defending the hive. Let's sting the thing that smells like bananas."

More stings produce more Tora Tora Tora pheromones, and draw more stingers. Over 1000 stings later, an adult human dies. DIES.

Don't mess with bees guys. Dey fuk u up.

Male Dwarf Cleric of Irori 5

Feh! Way I see it, I kill a THOUSAND of them before they can bring me down! ULTIMATE WARRIOR!!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Human Ranger

Or the sting you once on the tongue and incapacitate you so that you can not spoil their evil bee plans.

Male Dwarf Cleric of Irori 5

Hey man, that hurt like HELL! I swear they're studying us, learning our weak points!

Dungeon Master

shup:

1d20 ⇒ 5
1d20 ⇒ 20
1d20 ⇒ 5
hehehe...

Just so you newbies know: you're allowed multiple Sense Motive rolls in a conversation, usually when a response provides new information. I'll make an example to show you what I mean:

Bill walks up to John as John crams a donut into his mouth.

Bill: "Hi John. Are there any donuts left?"

John: "No, sorry."

Bill's Sense Motive tells him that John is not being honest.

Bill: "No really, where are they?"

John gulps: "I gave the rest to Barney."

Bill's second Sense Motive also detects falsehood. Plus, Bill knows Barney is on gluten-free diet: "Liar."

John shrugs: "Deal with it."

John's Sense Motive on Bill tells him that Bill is getting agitated. Up until now, he forgot about Bill's anger problem.

Bill's third Sense Motive helps him deduce that John is more nervous than he is letting on: "No."

For moment, Bill sees only red. John dies gruesomely for being a dumbass. Bill never learns about John's donut stash because he didn't use his words.

Dungeon Master

"the Bolgrith"

Dungeon Master

So, Balion. I was wondering why that snake is giving you so much trouble, so I took a hard look at your character profile. I found a few errors that are very important to correct.

Without armor or shield, your AC should be 11. (10 + 1[Dexterity]) You do not have a Resistance bonus to your AC.

All of your saves are too low. Let me break it down to what they should be:

Fortitude +7 = 4(base) + 2(Constitution) +1(resistance)
Reflex +6 = 4(base) + 1(Dexterity) +1(resistance)
Will +6 = 4(base) + 1(Wisdom) +1(resistance) Your current Will save is +5, see below.

The “base” bonus to your saving throws is from your Ranger class. Base save bonuses vary from class to class. For example, wizards and sorcerers have a higher base bonus to Will saves than to Fortitude. The resistance bonus is from your Cloak of Resistance +1.

Your Wisdom score is currently 9, which bestows a -1 modifier to your Will save instead of the normal +1. After 8 hours of rest, your Wisdom score will heal 1 point to a score of 10 (and a modifier of +0). It will take 48 hours of rest to heal your Wisdom score back to 13, unless you procure magical healing.

I’m sorry if I never explained this to you, I thought I did. Please fix it before your next post.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

Ooo! Snake poison! How fancy!

Dungeon Master

Balion, I have a correction on the above post. This is what your Will save should be:

Will +3 = 1(base) +1(Wisdom) +1(resistance) Current Will save is +1.

And yes. Fancy fancy snake poison.

Dungeon Master

almost forgot/don't look:

1d20 ⇒ 11

Dungeon Master

Fellas? We almost made it off the ground!

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

I'm here. Ready and waiting.

P.s. I want my eyes back.

Dungeon Master

Granted. Two eyes blink open between your shoulder blades. The sweaty tunic under the armor makes them REALLY sting.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

perfect

Dungeon Master

"...make it very difficult to..."
to what?! WHAT IS SO DIFFICULT. Heh, sorry about that. Just read as "...very difficult to do so." and it will get the point across.

Sczarni

Male Human

NO! REWRITE THE WHOLE THING!

Dungeon Master

Fellas? Is there something I missed? Been about almost a week since the last post. Let me know if you have questions.

Male Human Ranger

Had a busy week and it slipped my mind I'm ready to start playing again as soon as everyone else is.

Male Hobgoblin (Shielded) Fighter 4

Bolgrith, we currently have two Hero points. Any chance of you using one to cast a spell you don't have and remove my blindness before this mage man shows up?

Dungeon Master

Everyone should have 3 Hero Points unless you spent one. You get one at each level.
