Sansa places the two potions in her rucksack. She had made one using some heavy cloth she discovered back in the remains of Celeste's home. She would keep the healing potions. She also claimed the masterwork morningstar, as she was capable of using such a weapon. Quinn looked at Sansa as she organised the items she had claimed.

The other items she brought back with her, making a few trips, until they were in a small pile before the others in front of the Town Hall.

"Amara, the arrows and crossbow could be useful to you. The spear for Elarya. The (masterwork) chain mail and shield for Garrett. But how you divide the items is up to you. These are just my suggestions."

Walking to Garrett's side, Sansa hands over the scroll tube housing the loose sheets of paper. "The handwriting looks like Erec's. I have not read the contents. As his brother, it is your right." Sansa would silently mourn Erec's death as she was Mother Celeste's and Dante's deaths.

GM, how many books exactly did Sansa find in her home and can she carry them all herself? Are they light, heavy etc. Thanks.

Just an FYI, Elarya is NOT with the group. She's still at the ruins of the smithy.

F Changeling Oracle 1, Witch 1/AC 12/HP 13/F +3 R +3 W +8/Init +1/Perc +7/+9

The GM mentioned that eventually we'd all meet back at the Town Hall after we went to our respective homes. So it would be some time after that when Sansa (and Quinn) would have gone searching through town, found the things and returned back to the others. So, technically Elarya would be there by that time. Unless Elarya does not mean to get back to the group at any point. But I am unaware of that. Sansa would have been busy searching for a couple of hours at least (her home and throughout the township). I presumed Elarya would have found her way back to the group after such a time.

HP: 20/23 AC 14/12/12: F +5, R +2, W -1, Per:+4, Init: +2, Rage: 8/8

Yeah that's of course assuming that Elarya wants to go back. I'm not trying to be contrary or anything, just trying to play a character.

Wall of Text Explanation:

I am very familiar with Elarya's current mental state at this point in the game having been there (though not to the degree she has.) She feels like she's failed at the one thing she had to do. When you feel like that, the last thing you're going to do is seek out other people, even your friends, especially when you're pretty close to the edge of just straight up despair. What you will do is sit and brood. I've been there, been there quite recently in fact. It's not fun, but it happens. If you ever meet me, you'd see one of three sides of me. The funny, oddball side. The quiet, not very social side. And the stiff as a board, he's faking it side. Every single one of my characters has a little bit of me in their personalities. Some eventually take a life of their own, like Gkirkhan or Raseri. Elarya isn't at that point in her development as a character yet. Part of it's the pace of the game, the other is that she probably has the most of my personality out of all of my characters. Maybe this is me subconsciously calling for help, but if it is, I don't know about it, so it's probably nothing to worry about. (Let's just say that I have some strong thoughts on suicide, homocide, and any of those other things that people snap and do.) What I can say for certain is that this is me trying to play out the development and emotional state of my character. Is it selfish, melodramatic, and jsut a bit whiney? I'd be a liar if I said no. Depression is like that. It's a self centered condition. I'm not saying that people suffering from it are bad people. I am saying that a lot of times, it leads people to focus on themselves instead of others.

That said, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have not been tested for Depression or anything else, though it's not beyond the realm of the probable that I suffer from something. I have felt very down and wore out, particularly when I've screwed up and upset someone in my family. I also want to make it clear that I can turn it down if need be. I don't want this to become all about my character's issues and no one else getting the spotlight, but I need someone to tell me if they think that it's too much. I can't read minds and I have horrible impluse control (something I'm working on. Been rather slow going.)

TL;DR: I have my reasons for having Elarya be a recluse at the moment, but let me know if I need to turn the melodrama down.

F Changeling Oracle 1, Witch 1/AC 12/HP 13/F +3 R +3 W +8/Init +1/Perc +7/+9

Okay, so Elarya is still at the Smithy and the rest of us are congregated near the Town Hall. I'll play it accordingly.

Female Human Ranger Level 2

Amara realizes the sense Sansa makes and agrees to search the buildings but has a word of warning.

"I have noticed both goblin tracks and other tracks I cannot identify. They are humanoid and varied in size. Please be careful and perhaps keep an eye out for anymore and anything else unusual. The track seemed to head for the cliffs near the sea.'

She looks at the sky noting the cloud patterns and the smell in the air trying to determine what the weather has in store for them this evening. I think you said in was a couple of hours to sunset. She then turns slowly and proceeds to go in a different direction than the others in an effort to cover more ground. She also pays attention to the structure of the buildings to see if any might be useful for providing safe shelter.

perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
survival to forecast weather: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Upon return in answer to Sansa.

"I will gladly take the arrows but I have my shortbow if someone else would like the crossbow."

GM:
I was reading the Campaign info again and noticed the part about the heirloom item. I either missed it the first time or didn't think there was a way to work it into my character that was realistic. If it makes sense perhaps Amara could find something in the ruins. Or Samel liked to camp out a lot maybe he had a special place in the forest Amara knew about where he kept a small cache of items. If it doesn't work out that is fine with me. It was just a thought.

F Changeling Oracle 1, Witch 1/AC 12/HP 13/F +3 R +3 W +8/Init +1/Perc +7/+9

A slight ret-con, GM if you will allow.

The cliffs near the sea. That is where they had slumbered for the last two years...by the Corvina tree. If Goblins came their way, then why had they left them alone? It would have been easy to slay them all in their sleep. Unless Corvina's magic prevented them from doing so? Maybe they believed us dead? Sansa's mind was full of thoughts and questions.

"I will be mindful, Amara. I will see if there are other/further tracks to find and follow as I search."

"Quinn, can you pick up any unusual scents in the air?"

Quinn's Survival, via scent tracking: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Sansa's Survival, via tracking: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 As mentioned it isn't quite sunset yet and even if Sansa keeps looking once the sun falls, she has darkvision to 60ft (if time runs away from her, that is).

***
Back to present time.

Once she had returned to Amara, Havak and Garrett, Sansa laid down the items and Amara took the arrows but left the crossbow. "If any other has skill with the crossbow, they may take it."

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Sansa immediately noted Elarya's absence. GM, does she note anything else based on the above perception roll? "Has anyone seen Elarya since she ran off earlier? The group must remain close at all times or at least know where each person is at all times." "Amara, you are her friend, or at least someone she may heed. Will you go find her and bring her back here?" The northern girl had a penchant for brooding, but now was not the time for it or to be separated from the group, especially with the tracks Amara had discovered earlier.

Female Human Ranger Level 2

"I will see if I can find her. I'm sure she would have headed home first so I will start there."

Although I'm not sure you would call us friends as much as friendly acquaintances; Amara spent much of her time in the woods or on the sea with her brothers and Elarya was mostly at the forge.

Amara makes her way way from the others towards the smithy. She listens in the growing dark for any strange sounds and keeps her eyes pealed for the tell-tale glow of eyes.

perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

She at first sees nothing upon entering the smithy but soon finds Elarya huddled on the floor gazing with unseeing eyes. Knowing her volatile nature and seeing her cradling a sword, Amara does not immediately approach her but instead calls, "Elarya, are you all right? Are you injured?" She receives no reply and tries again, "Elarya, the others have gathered by the town hall." She is not sure if Elarya is ignoring her or actually can't hear her but either way she is not getting a response. Not sure what to do but knowing Elarya has a very strong sense of duty she takes a breath and yells, "Elarya! We need you! There are strange tracks in the town! There could be danger!"

Since it’s been so long since I’ve posted it would take too long to do a complete retcon. Garrett will first search his home then the docks. If I can’t find a whetstone and some oil I’ll head over to the blacksmith’s to search for them there.

For what seemed like a lifetime, Garrett Snow could not break the stare he shared with his mirrored reflection. His frosty eyes were empty. Perhaps it was his tears that had washed all the color from them. His jaw line was bristled in coarse copper hair and the way his father’s chainmail draped from his shoulders made him feel as old as he looked.

I look like you right now, father. If you could see me you’d think it was some sort of magic trick. We’ve seen enough magic tricks, haven’t we? The town… Solace… There’s no want for magic here. I wanted you to be proud of me, father. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. No matter how I tried I couldn’t stop them from hurting you. Maybe Erec and mum made it to the boat but you were there with me at the tree. I used Corvina’s magic. I know you told me never to get caught in her black arts but I did anyway. I thought it would save you. I thought it might even save the town but… I was wrong. I hope you would forgive me. Forgiveness was never something you gave carelessly but I hope in this case you could give me just that. You’ve given me so much. I know it’s selfish to ask for more but it’s the last… the last thing I’ll need from you. I’m sorry my failure cost you all of this. If you could see me from the heavens I promise I will make up for this someday. Someday you’ll be proud to call me your son. Just as I’ve been proud to call you my father.

He slowly pulls his eyes from the mirror and picks up the weapons he had piled on the bed. With one last glance at the reflected ghost he leaves for the docks to see if his family’s boat had made it safely away. He’d also need a whetstone to scratch off a few speckles of rust from the unused swords he’d found and some oil to loosen the rings in his father’s mail. If there wasn’t any by the docks there’d surely be some at the smithy’s.

I can empathize with you on most of what you said, Elarya. I don’t want to overstep but a lot of what you wrote rings true.

HP: 20/23 AC 14/12/12: F +5, R +2, W -1, Per:+4, Init: +2, Rage: 8/8

"What's the point? Even when I try it turns out the same as if I did nothing."

Defeat, edged with bitterness, colors her voice. Her eyes don't move from the patch of dirt where they had been fixed for the past few hours.

Just want to make it clear that this does not reflect my emotional state at the moment. I'm actually in a pretty good mood since we're finishing up a big project at work.

F Changeling Oracle 1, Witch 1/AC 12/HP 13/F +3 R +3 W +8/Init +1/Perc +7/+9

Okay, Garrett's actions negate Amara's and Sansa's the past few days if he is headed to the smithy (before they all congregate by the Town Hall and where the conversations have been happening) - which means he will see Elarya there and there is no need for Amara to go look for her. GM, do we retcon this, again, or just ignore the fact that Garrett may have seen Elarya and spoken with her beforehand?

I'm going to make a call, and say nothing is retonned. Garrett found a whetstone at his house, and then went to the docks. He never went to the smithy, and so when he returned he came back to the town hall where everyone is. Then the group noticed Elarya was still away and asked Amara to go look for him. Does that make sense to everyone?

F Changeling Oracle 1, Witch 1/AC 12/HP 13/F +3 R +3 W +8/Init +1/Perc +7/+9

I'm fine with that since it looks like Elarya answered Amara calling out to her by the smithy when she went to look for her. Thanks, GM.

Sansa would also see the same tracks that Amara had found, and they do indeed go to the cliffs, but it's hard to say how much further without actually going down to the beach. As for the other tracks (the goblins) she would see those as well, to the north of town by the road. Quin takes several sniffs around the area, and emotes Odd (past). Calm (now)

Amara doesn't detect any other creatures in the immediate vicinity.

The weather appears to be calm, and clouds are gathering, but they are thin and don't indicate rain.

when all are gathered (perhaps all but Elarya, depending on how much effort the girls put into finding her), Havak asks, "So, what have we found out? Havak found some things, but they are likely not related to the attack."

gm:

ok, so interesting items Havak has in addition to his basic gear should be as follows (correct me if i am wrong):

dagger with blue gem (likely magical)
parchments/journals
map to secret passage in the hill
Jerem's amulet (also perhaps magical)

To Havak, and any other present, Sansa discloses, "Amara and I both discovered two sets of tracks in town. There is a set moving toward the cliffs to the south and another which look like goblin's on the road north to the old Watchtower. I think we should find out where they lead. I would know if any goblin or other has trespassed upon my Watchtower and how far they travelled if they are not entrenched within. To save time, I say we divide into two groups and search out the cliffs and beach below and the Watchtower. Quinn and I will take the latter. We will accept any other who would come with us."

Looking about her and at the low-hanging sun in the sky, she adds, "However, the day grows long and light is diminishing. It is not wise to travel out in darkness to an unknown threat. Perhaps we sleep in town for the night and go in search come morning. It does not look like it will rain and wash the tracks away, so we can take the time to be safe. Quinn, here, got hold of a scent and he communicated to me that in the past something was odd but now it is calm. The link is feeling-based between us, so it is not detailed unfortunately. Amara was looking for a safe place to sleep earlier when I was collecting these items. Perhaps she will return with Elarya in due course."

Male RETIRED Blue Goblin Chirurgeon 2

On his turn, Havak says, "Havak have found a few items belonging to ol' Johnas that lead me to believe there is a trapped treasure cache around here. Stuff he had stashed away from his younger days. Perhaps the goblins are after it? Or perhaps it is unrelated."

Female Human Ranger Level 2

Amara is getting annoyed with Elarya's self pity and snaps at her.
"I don't know what happened before you got to Solace Elarya but what happened today happened to all of us. I too have lost my entire family and could do nothing to stop it. Garrett's family is gone and Sansa has lost the only family she has ever known. Havak was driven from his family years ago. None of us were able to stop what happened to them but we are at least trying to do something now, even if we don't know what it is!"

She sees the striken look in Elarya's eyes and softens her tone. "We are all gathered at the town hall. Come with me and at least we and you can do nothing with us instead of here."

chooses to go with Amara:
She holds out her hand to the girl and leads her back to the others.

chooses to stay behind:
She shrugs and says, "You know where to find us if you change your mind, remember, there has been something here whose tracks I can't identify so either way be careful." Amara then heads back towards the others.

When Amara returns with a sombre Elarya in tow, Sansa turns to face them both. Upon hearing Amara speak of sharing information and learning more about each other, Sansa raises an eyebrow but says nothing. Then, when it is time for Elarya to share her story, Sansa makes herself comfortable on the ground, with Quinn trotting up and laying down beside her.

HP: 20/23 AC 14/12/12: F +5, R +2, W -1, Per:+4, Init: +2, Rage: 8/8

Elarya sits. taking the sword and holding it like she was when Amara found her. Emptiness filled her eyes as she looked at a patch of ground just a few feet in front of her.

"Almost everyone in town knew I showed up in the middle of the night covered in blood. I only told Wallace what happened that night. My family, my clan, have a tradition. Everyone on their fifteenth birthday swears an oath. Not to kings, or even to the gods. It is an oath to all we may meet. We vow to be shields to those who need protection, and swords to those who cannot fight."

She pauses for a moment. Her voice then continues on in the same dispassionate and level tone she had been using since Amara had found her.

"I had an uncle that traveled with the caravans south. He left the day after I took my oath, and I went with him. A little ways from here, on the main road, the caravan was ambushed by bandits while we camped. They slaughtered everyone. Everyone but me. While they fought and died, I hide. I hide and watched."

She stops. The silence stretches on for a long while, but she finally looks up and says, "There you have it. The reason I showed up, covered in blood, without a scratch on me."

"Havak thinks it might be his old tribe, but not sure. Could be another group moved in too."

If we go by the timing of events, we'd be sitting on the ground, outside the Town Hall, in near darkness (as the sun would have already set by this time). We may have to consider going somewhere indoors for shelter/protection in the near future.

Sansa had listened attentively as Elarya bared her secret. Her small hand was petting Quinn's head, which was bent close to her crossed legs. She kept her long nails from hurting him accidentally.

In soft, melodic voice (which was Sansa's way of speaking) she attempts to convey assurance with logic, "You were fifteen and inexperienced in killing. To feel afraid and to hide is not shameful, even if an oath seems broken, Elarya. I do not believe your Uncle would have required you to die along with the rest. You were spared for a reason, and one day you will find out what that reason is."

Indeed night has fallen, the last bits of sunlight vanish over the horizon.
The five of you sit in the ruins just outside the former town hall.
Sansa's words ring with the logic of the situation. Perhaps you should find some form of temporary shelter, or at the very least, make a fire...

Female Human Ranger Level 2

Amara was specifically looking at the ruins with thoughts to the one most suitable for shelter. Did anything stand out?

Amara is not really sure what to say to Elarya but is sympathetic to the girl's distress. "One incident does not make a pattern. You fought bravely against Jerem and what has happened now is no fault of yours."
Realizing the sun has now all but disappeared Amara quickly collects some of the wood that is littered around the town and starts a small fire; fortunately Amara's flint and steel were in her belt pouch with her. Her belly rumbles a bit and she tells her companions, "I think one of first priorities tomorrow should be to find food. Treasure can wait until our bellies are full."
She does, however, ask to see Jonas' map.

"Thank you for the fire, Amara." Sansa stands, moves closer to it and extends her hands, feeling the tentative heat reach out to her. Quinn sits up nearby, watching her with amber-yellow eyes made brighter by the flames.

Sansa watches Elarya out of the corner of her eye but says nothing at all about the young woman's disinterested manner. She would put no reliance on the northerner; not in Elarya's current state of mind.

Sansa was happy to hear that Amara could find Johnas' secret cache from his map and silently agreed it was best to leave it until tomorrow and after they organised themselves better regarding food, water and shelter.

In soft voice, she addresses Amara, "Upon the morrow, I will join you to look for food, Amara."

Amara smiles at the strange, quiet girl and settles herself near the fire.

"The hall is the only structure with even a hint of a roof, but I don't think it's going to rain. I will stay by the fire tonight."

Amara stares into the fire, her mind recalling the last encounters she had with her family: her mother's smile, her brothers' teasing, her father's rough hands as he mended a fishing net. Tears again start to fall from her eyes but they are silent, as if she doesn't even notice. Having essentially woken up from a two year sleep Amara is not really tired and stays awake long into the night, refueling the fire as necessary, but eventually the hypnotic flames cause her to drift to sleep. And her dreams are filled with the sight of the town on fire and people screaming.

Havak will sleep, crossbow in one hand, new dagger in the other. He will stand watch if woken for such, but he imagines there are others who are going to have plenty of trouble sleeping.

Gazing intently into the flames, Sansa's mismatched silver and gold eyes blaze with a haunting light.

She hears Amara mention taking shelter in the remains of what was once the Town Hall, but like Amara, she decides to remain in the open by the fire.

Sansa moves a little back from the fire and settles herself next to Quinn again.

She watches the older ranger girl and the shiny trails of tears on her face. Sansa admired Amara's quiet inner strength. They had all lost their families and Amara had temporarily put aside her own sorrow to aid the group. Sansa's own thoughts moved to Celeste and Dante. She had been part of a family since she was a babe found washed ashore by Celeste. The human woman had been a kind and patient mother to her and Sansa would never forget her charity and love. Dante had always been a strange boy, possibly stranger than herself. She would miss his quiet presence, as well. Erec, her best friend. He was gone along with the rest. Two years had passed without their knowledge. They were no longer children. Now would come the hard part. She stayed alert, watching the shadows for hours.

Sansa stroked Quinn's soft russet fur until she could no longer hear the crackling wood and leaves in the fire. Her eyes slowly closed and a tear escaped to run down her cheek. She never felt it. Sansa and Quinn curled into one another and finally slept.

Elarya slept leaned against one of the walls of the old hall. The nightmares she expected to come never did. Instead, she found herself in a void facing a great silver dragon.

Elarya's Dream:
This was not the nightmare she expected. She was prepared for the night of her uncle's death, or the last fight where the horde over ran the town. She was clothed and armored, but she felt as naked as if she were wearing nothing. Sheer terror gripped her heart and her legs felt like lead. She couldn't move, she couldn't scream. All she could do was stare into eyes that had seen thousands upon thousands of winters.

Why do you despair, Little Whitescale?

She couldn't answer.

Why do you wallow in self-pity?

Anger welled up in her heart and burned in her throat.

"I don't!"

Yet you seem content to do nothing. You are blinded by selfishness. Others are suffering as you have.

"And what can I tell them? That it will be okay? That their families are in a better place? They lost their families and friends because I wasn't strong enough! I wasn't good enough to keep them from getting cut down. I didn't fight when my uncle died. I fought and they all still died! What good is shield if it can't protect anything?! What good is an oath you can't keep?"

Tears flowed down her cheeks. Tears as cold as ice. Ice so cold it burned like fire. The dragon simply looked on. Then it's voice echoed in her mind, but whispered quietly in her ear.

Who says that you failed? Who says that your oath is broken? You are the only one Little Whitescale. No one could live up to the expectations you set for yourself. You are not alone, even if you act as such.

The dragon touched its nose to her forehead. Calmness flowed into her mind.

You have grieved enough Elarya. It is time for you to move on. I t is time for you to put off the mask and let your true self show. I was the one that your clan first swore that oath to. You have not broken it. You only need look at those you managed to protect to see that.

Elarya woke in the grey twilight of the predawn hours. The light from the embers was dim, but it was enough. She cleaned the soot and the grime from scabbard and hilt of her uncle's blade. Her blade. The sun was still several minutes from rising, but something within her blazed with a fire she hadn't felt since that faithful night. The whistle of steel sounded in the lightening predawn. She swept from stance to stance, move flowed into move. The steps came as easily as breathing. Her movements were like a dance.

For the first time in over a year, Elarya was finally free.

Garrett Snow takes his place by the fire quietly turning his brother's written words in his mailed hands, unable to break the seal and read them with his own eyes. It's been a long enough day and whatever's written here is likely to haunt my dreams tonight. I'll read them first thing in the morning, Erec. I know you'd understand.

He found himself growing restless the tears and silence of his young companions dragged on and finally stands from repose and begins the long process of unfastening his father's armor. I can't afford to be so selfish anymore. They need someone to be strong for them; or at the very least appear to be strong. He slips free of the heavy steel shirt and drapes it over the gauntlets laid out near the fire. In only the leather lining of his grieves and a loose roughspun tunic he returns to his seat and methodically runs a whetstone down the length of his sword.

"Get whatever rest you can muster, I'll keep the first watch," he announces over the rasping of stone on steel. "Whatever we hope to accomplish tomorrow must be done quickly. We can't expect to stay here forever."

The dark didn't bother him as much as he'd expected. His eyes had always been better attuned to the shadows. When he finished with his sword he began working at his chainmail with an oiled rag taking care to tallow each link and file the rust from every joint. He gives the same treatment to his shield next. The falcon head emblem appeared more fierce than he could have remembered. His father's emblem. Something he had never made a point to explain significance to his sons.

Amara awoke with a start, not sure what had wakened her. The sun was just beginning to brighten the night sky when she noticed the dancing form of, Elarya?! She watched the girl for a moment, admiring the beauty of her movements. She looked around the fire making note of the other figures lying or seated there. Sansa, with her strange new companion, was even more enigmatic and ethereal. Havak did not seem much changed, but with him it was hard to say; he didn't really open up much. Garrett, always very responsible, seemed even more careworn. His words from last night came again to mind, "We can't expect to stay here forever.",he said. But where will we go? Amara decided to focus on one thing at a time and right now that thing was food. She did not need any help finding food but decided to wait for Sansa to join her because she said she wanted to and Amara couldn't deny their overpowering need to do something. Amara pushed all thoughts of those lost away for fear she would start crying again. Seeing Sansa awake she says, "My belly is urging me to be expedient in finding food. Has anyone checked to see if there is any usable fishing gear left? Maybe someone could try for a few fish." Leaving the others with that thought she turns to Sansa, "Shall we be off?" She gathers her bow and quiver and prepares to head into the forest.

was there anything that could be used to make a snare? If so Amara will take that and look for rabbit runs to set it along.

survival to forage: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 perhaps I can get a bonus from knowledge geography or something because the terrain is relatively familiar? She probably already knows where berry bushes, edible plants are located. Not that she needs it I guess:)
