STONE-FACED KILLA

"Is 'big' a species? Some kind of giant?"

it's definitely a giant, but I can't see what type. Some are more...amicable than others. Though individuals always vary, and one that leads with 'Meat' and a crossbow bolt is unlikely to be swayed by words. Best to bring him down fast.

"Agreed...unless you think me flashing some leg at him will persuade him to reconsider...somehow I kinda doubt it."

If you want to make him MORE hungry, I guess Orin says with a smirk.

"That would depend if it prefers hairy legs." The gnome dead-pans.

Orin Vanderwhal wrote:
What is it? Straehan, can you light it up somehow? At this range I can't tell what species it is, and if it's likely to respond to a parley.

Straehan gives Orin a feral grin as Jayse sprints up hill and vanishes into the darkness. "Oh I can light it up in several ways... but let me see what kind of conventional lighting I can deliver. For what's it's worth, it is a Cyclops of some sort."

The gnome makes a series of arcane gestures and a set of 4 lights appear and bob near the creature - illuminating it and the approaching monk. Given the massive size of the creature and its weapons, you debate whether Straehan should shut the lights off.

Feel free to read the Jofram/Straehan spoiler above.

In the light, you can see a calculating, somewhat intelligent look in the cyclop's eye. It seems unimpressed by the eldritch lights around it. Instead, it gauges the monk's progress and fingers its ballista-sized arbalest and the greataxe on its back - debating which weapon to deploy.

Orin - normally, I'd throw in a spoilered precis on the creature to reveal the basics, but if you want to RP it, feel free.

Re: Parley - it is reasonably intelligent but also evil. It might be possible to negotiate with it but the creature would probably require a strong show of strength on your part before it would see you as something other than a meal.

Round: 1

ORDER: Popeye, Jayse, Straehan, Orin, Jofram, Ushari

Map: 30 Degrees of Battle

Knowledge: Nature 10 + 12 = 22 Take 10 - Lore

Good idea. Yes, it's a cyclops--but no ordinary cyclops. I've heard of some that are bigger than their kin, and can glimpse the future at times. This one won't parley unless it feels it might lose, and that won't happen without a strong show of force.

Orin also adopts a fighting stance--while Jayse crouches low and defensively, Orin stands tall, hands at his sides, moving slowly and carefully studying his much-larger opponent.

Swift Action: Activate Kirin Style. Standard Action: Use Know Thy Enemy--+2 competence to attack and damage after successful Knowledge check. (doesn't stack with Jofram's bardic music, but Orin doesn't yet know he can do that). Move action: Orin moves cautiously to G-2.

[ooc] Knowledge (Nature) 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 28

Not sure what to extent I learn from that roll, but it should be enough to activate my ability.

STONE-FACED KILLA

I only intended for Jayse to step up into F-4... which (unless I'm misunderstanding your map) should put him just a few squares out in front of Ushari).

EDIT: ah... I see the problem. I didn't look hard enough at the map... I meant F/4.

I was wondering if you had enhanced movement somehow, hehe. Well, if you're not in front of me I might want a different turn, if that's ok SR.

If I'm allowed to adjust my turn based on Jayse's corrected location...

As part of his movements, Orin weaves a spell, and several duplicate images of himself are created.

Swift Action: Activate Kirin Style. Free Action: Knowledge (Nature) to identify the creature (roll above). Standard Action: Cast Mirror Image, Arcane Spell Failure 10%: 1d100 ⇒ 83--succeeds. Images created: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Move action: Orin moves cautiously to G-2.

Straehan wrote:

"I believe that is why they invented stockings..." which i am NOT wearing...

As Jayse and Orin move up to protect herself and Straehan, she gauges the cyclops intentions. "If it wants to eat us, then at some point it will have to approach us. We can take cover behind the rock outcroppings and make it come down here to get us."

...Not that it wouldn't be painful, but Jayse and Orin too I suspect are much more effective close in combatants.

She raises her hand and bathes the area with divine energy bolstering her comrades for the upcoming fight and moves under the outcropping, trying to gain some cover from its crossbow attacks. She also reaches into a hidden pouch and activates Skitter, chattering softly to it explaining the situation.

Standard action: Cast PRAYER; duration 7 rds.
Move action: Move to H2 and draw rapier.
Swift action: Activate Skitter.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Orin sneaks forward, his careful eyes noting details of the cyclops that his mind compares to books of lore he once studied. With a few quick gestures, multiple images of himself appear. He gains another measure of safety standing behind the mystical door to Crossroads that rises halfway out of the hill's slope.

Ushari also creeps forward as her divine grace washes across her comrades, instilling them with skill. The open slope provides less cover than she would hope for.

Next up... Jofram

Read Me!:
OK, a few administrative points...
You don't need to list a coordinate with a '-' unless that is the actual (negative) coordinate. H6 is fine with me. If it doesn't work for you, do H/6 or H|6 or pretty much anything but H-6 since I will read that as -6. Normally I try to do maps without the negative coordinates, this time I screwed up. My initial read was that Jayse did a double-move and I missed the Full Defensive as a Standard action bit. So that was my mistake.

Orin, I'm assuming you mean G2 not G-2.

Second, if you guys would, please put actions on separate OOC lines. Ushari's or Straehan's posts are the format I find easiest to read and spot any odd discrepancies. You don't need to list 'action' but showing the action type would be great:
Stand: Do X
Swift: Do Y
Free: Do Z

Third, if you are casting a spell, it would be great to show a link to the spell as it makes my job easier. See Ushari's or Straehan's post for examples of that as well.

ON with the Show...

Orin:
In terms of what you can say about the strengths/weaknesses of a creature - I'm pretty loose on that. This time I'll include a sample of the typical spoiler I use rather than have one of the characters have to RP the info dump. :: Strike for the space between horn and eye ::

... whispers the Gauntlet in his mind, giving Jofram an edge.

Target Enemy?

STONE-FACED KILLA

Yep. Sorry. I threw the post up hastily. And about mechanics posting, I can do that.

Light him up, Jofram!

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Don't worry about it. I was updating in between other stuff and wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been.

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

DEFINITELY Target Enemy

Arcane energy winks for a moment around the ranger as he activates his magical armor. The last vestiges of the fey glow form themselves into his bow, the half elf readying arrows to nock even as the weapon coalesces.

Arrows stream from the summoned bow toward the massive creature's single eye.

rolls:
Full Attack (EDIT: I meant Manyshot; not Rapid shot - name change only; extra damage remains.)
Attack 1: (Arcane Strike, Deadly Aim, Target Enemy, Manyshot): 1d20 + 14 + 2 - 2 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 14 + 2 - 2 + 4 = 38 <--Crit x3?
Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 = 18
Attack 2: (Arcane Strike, Deadly Aim, Target Enemy): 1d20 + 9 + 2 - 2 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 2 - 2 + 4 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 = 15
.
Crit Confirm (Anatomist):1d20 + 14 + 2 - 2 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 14 + 2 - 2 + 4 + 1 = 23
.
So if that crits, is it for both arrows with Manyshot, or just one? Max damage on crit arrow is 21, and bonus crit damage triples to 63. So damage for attack #1 is either 84 or 126, depending on the ruling (if my math is right). Also, due to the gauntlet, my arrows are considered Magical, if that matters.

Wow. Wow. Wonder if this dude wants to continue sniping? :-)

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

Disclaimer: The previous roll was neither expected, nor a common occurrence. Put not your faith in me, sir. Many a 1 has graced my digital |dice|.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

HEY! Who said you could b!~#$-slap my baddy for 76 DAM?! :)

Jofram's arrows strike like bolts of lightning - two of them burying half-way to their fletching in the cyclop's brow. The beast staggers under the two spikes of burning pain in its skull. It throws its head back and howls its pain and fury. "KILL YOU LITTLE MAN!"

rules and sich:
Actions: You can't take 2 Swift actions in the single round so you can either deploy armor or your bow, not both. I'm going to assume you are going with the bow. :)

Rules: You are a bit off on how Manyshot works. You can only score critical damage once despite the fact that both arrows hit. However, you do receive your other benefits twice - once per arrow, including the Prayer bonus you forgot. Our houserule about criticals does apply to each arrow, so on the 'threat' you get the max damage for each die. Also, you don't multiply your base roll for the critical damage, you roll the dice. So the damage (all rules included) looks like this:

Arrow #1 Base: 8 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 1 - 3 = 19 <-includes DR
Arrow #2 Base: 8 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 1 - 3 = 19 <-includes DR
Crit Damage (using your included rolls):
5 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 1 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 1 = 38
TOTAL DAM: 19 + 19 + 38 = 76

Thanks, SR! There was a lot going on there, so I was less than confident on how that broke down. I appreciate the help!

I believe the phrase is actually "Boom goes the dynamite"

No thanks needed Jofram - just part of the service... as is this next bit. ;)
Dynamite? I don't need no steenkin' dynamite!

Popeye drops his crossbow and pulls his greataxe while thundering down the mountain at an alarming pace... lumbering easily across the familiar terrain. He roars twice and drives his greataxe deeply into the lose shale and rock above our heroes. The hillside quakes and explodes from the strength of his titanic blow. It is the single hardest strike any of you has ever seen. Sharp boulders are shot like giant, lethal, marbles in all directions - some landing halfway down the hillside and tumbling the rest of the way to the valley floor. You are whipped by a shower of dirt and pulverized rock. Needle shards of rock nick you all as they explode past, forcing you to shield yourselves briefly.

There is an ominous silence. Then there is the sound of stone cracking and splitting as the entire hillside between Popeye and yourself gives way and slides like a deadly grey torrent downhill towards your position. It quickly gathers speed. The avalanche threatens to boil over you or throw you all from the steep slope, even as it smashes the door to Crossroads to utter ruin. Popeye lopes in skillfully behind it, coming towards the half-elf that's caused him so much pain...

Rock falls, everbody... >:D

The graphic shows the leading edge of the avalanche but most of the terrain behind it is sliding and treacherous. The outward edges are also expanding and the slide is at least 7' high - the angle of the slope and concomitant dust make it rather hard to estimate.

You estimate the implacable wall of rock will roll across you at the end of this round - HAVE A NICE DAY. :)

Orin sees the danger and reacts quickly, trying to save as many of his teammates as he can. He chants an incantation and starts rising off the ground, his hair lengthening as he floats. The teacher reaches into his pack and drops a rope to Ushari while his hair snakes toward Jayse.

Guys, just to be clear since my post could be read two ways... the door to Crossroads has NOT been hit yet and still remains a viable exit, if you want to retreat.

You can have a brief convo (Free Action) or discuss strategies in the OOC but please post in order or be aware that I will adjudicate actions in order.

Before Orin can throw down his rope, Ushari yells up to him "Don't worry about me Orin, I can take care of myself!"

My bad, sorry, the other campaigns I've been in have been more like an "US" vs "Them" in terms of initiative. I also thought the door was already destroyed when I posted my actions anyway. Feel free to disregard my turn. So 2 turns, 2 retcons for me. But at least I used the correct format (I think) in my post this time. :-)

Do you guys want to stand and fight this thing and lose our gateway back, or do you want to run (like cowards, hehe).

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

No apology necessary. The convention we generally use is the name in bold is up. If I've bolded more than one name, all those folks can post and I'll take them in order or mix and match if one seems reliant on the others. Also, throwing out what you'd like to do can help organize a strategy which is sometimes a very VERY good thing. :) Basically, your post will stand until we get to your turn and you have all the freedom until then to amend it or change it based on whatever everyone else does.

I saw the bolded names earlier but totally forgot about it this time. During work I try to check the threads when I can and try to hurry and get my post in when necessary. This time I was very excited to see the Cyclops' retaliation and just totally forgot about the bolded order. At least, like Orin, I'm a pretty quick study. ;-) Ok, so if everyone wants to stand and fight, I'll take that turn (and Jayse could grab my hair before I float, if he wants to hehe). If everyone turns tail and runs, I will as well (though I might be able to solo this dude with levitate and my bow in theory, I'm not really willing to test it out in practice.)

STONE-FACED KILLA
Orin wrote:

Hold that thought. :)

"Get high! Get fast! Or get vanished, people! Don't let him get you with that ridiculous axe!" Suiting action to words, Jayse channels the power of his mind through the stone at his forehead, melting from sight. Without wasting a breath, Jayse stokes the warm power flowing deep in his core, pushing it hard down into his legs, giving them a hot, tingly feeling.

If everyone could see Jayse, they'd see him launch from the ground like a giant grasshopper -- slippers finding an impossible grip just northwest of where Orin shelters -- then immediately rocket once again up into the air, attempting to clear the on-rushing avalanche in a pell-mell dash for the cyclops's discarded crossbow.

As it stands, the only evidence of his passing is a rush of wind past Orin that disturbs his long, white hair.

Stand: Cast Vanish from stone (7 rounds)
Free: Activate Slippers of Spiderclimb
Swift: spend 1 ki for a +20 to speed for 1 round (+8 to jump)
Move: As one move action, do a double-jump-move to whatever square is north-east of Popeye's discarded crossbow (one jump up onto the shelf-thing; one over the avalanche; using the slippers to avoid as much contact with the ground as possible). Doing so as quietly as possible.

Jump (to ledge) 1d20 + 32 + 1 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 32 + 1 + 8 = 50 <-- 12.5' vertical
Jump (over avalanche) 1d20 + 32 + 1 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 32 + 1 + 8 = 59 <-- 14.75' vertical
Stealth 1d20 + 13 + 1 + 20 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 13 + 1 + 20 - 5 = 40.

If he can get next to the crossbow with that movement, Jayse will go ahead and Burn a Thrice-cursed Hero Point to go ahead and pick it up -- making it vanish. :)

AC: 25

Ushari spares the inviting doorway leading back to the Crossroads a split second glance before she notes Jayse vanishing out of sight.

I am NOT walking all the way back to Orfallen in these heels!

She holds her hand out and allows her divine power to suffuse her body. As she finishes calling on her deity, her body becomes lighter than air and she launches herself up into the nighttime air, the chill completely forgotten! She looks up at Orin and gives him a wave, "I am right behind you!"

Stand: Cast Fly (Domain spell) on herself.
Move: Fly 30' upwards (same square)

I'd like to amend my turn since Jayse vanished. I'd rather draw my bow instead of drawing the rope to drop (and would have offered my hair to Ushari instead of Jayse, though she doesn't need it). Should I repost now, or wait for Straehan?

I should clarify--if my action did occur before Jayse's, I'll keep it. It's just that if Jayse went first and vanished, I'd want to draw my bow instead.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Jayse's actions will go first. There is no hurry on posting, so if you'd like to wait on the Strae, that is fine. I'll try to post the results of Jayse's jump and Strae's actions tonight.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Invisible, Jayse leaps to the top of the doorframe before throwing himself over the roiling flood of stone rolling down the mountainside. It isn't a question of strength. Jayse's powerful leap carries him over the leading edge of the avalanche, and were he on level ground, it would carry him a great many feet besides...enough to pass over the flood entirely. But strength and speed aren't the issues. The relentless mountainside rises up to meet Jayse even as his jump passes its crest. He augers into the long, less turbulent tail of the avalanche...

Jayse - 2 Reflex saves, please.

explanation:
So, I checked rise of the terrain over the run (distance) of your leap based on the averaged angle of the hillside. Even assuming you start at the highest possible point (the doorframe), you simply can't get high enough to clear the distance you need.

Next Up... Straehan

Straehan leaps into the air while casting a spell... and keeps going. His robe flaps as the gnome soars up and forward - moving well clear of the avalanche.

Jayse skips like a stone across the turgid surface of the avalanche, his slippers giving him traction as he leaps between churning bone-crushing boulders. His feet are no match for his headlong speed, however. A slight mistep and the monk tumbles into the frothy mix of pumice and sharp rock, narrowly avoiding injury.

Jayse is prone and swimming against the downhill current but he is nearly out of the immediate avalanche area. Your spot on the map is accurate.

Ushari and Orin launch straight up into the air, the latter trailing sinuous hair that moves as if alive, even as a bow appears in his hands.

Next UP... Jofram and the Avalanche

don't forget +1 from Prayer. 10 might succeed.

Uh, guys, you really need to check Levitate. To quote it:
Target: you or one willing creature or one object (total weight up to 100 lbs./level)

EDIT - OK, I'm going to assume that Orin knows the limitations of his spells... so we're going to assume that he didn't invite others to climb aboard. So, JOFRAM, feel free to choose a different action.

2nd EDIT - Ben has mentioned that you might be able to carry a person as part of levitation... it seems strange to me given the write-up but I'll look up the precedents.

] well yeah, I cast levitate on myself, not Jofram. But while I'm floating, can't I lower a rope, or my hair in this case, for him to climb up and hold on. I'm floating, he's hanging on. Like throwing a rope down from a helicopter. No good?

Ruling presented in the OOC - I'll be using Jofram's initial actions.

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

Action Adjustment: Jofram skids to a halt, changing direction and jumping for Orin's hair-rope.

Actions:
Move to 'rope'
Climb: Original roll came out to a 10, I believe. I deleted the post, when we decided to go a different route, but now that we are back, I thought it only fair to keep the roll (it being so awesome and all...)

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Unsure whether he can get clear of the avalanche in time, Jofram spins and leaps for the trailing mane of hair. The snaky locks twine around his arms even as he starts to pull himself up. In a moment, Jofram has climbed to within 5' of the levitating spell-slinging warrior.

Like a vengeful plague, the avalanche howls and slams across the door, the ridgeline, and the narrow strip of land where the comrades were standing previously. Boulders 4 feet around, bounce and skip down the mountainside. A river of pebbles, stones, and rock dust scour the area clean - raising a choking fog. The doors thrum under the crushing onslaught but their magic is such that they resist splintering. They form an impregnable dam that shunts rocks and debris around and over them. Unfortunately, the mountain of rock continues to flow and pools behind then over the doors. In a few moments, they are half-buried and the tide of stone and earth blocking them continues to rise. They will be solidly entombed in rock shortly.

The wind off the moving wall of rock is ferocious, batting and spinning Jofram like a kite on the end of a string. The avalanche passes just a few feet below him. As he spins, he looks to the spot where he had planned to run. It isn't there any longer. There is only an ocean of sharp and churning rock.

Round 3 coming up...

Popeye follows carefully in the wake of the avalanche, his massive weight and cloven hoofs providing traction on the shifting rock. He slides to a stop in the 'dam' above the now buried door. Still stinging from the half-elf's arrows and his challenge in the Giant's Tongue, he eyes the dangling ranger like a pinata.

"NOW I EAT GOOD!" He swings the greataxe in a wide arc, gathering speed and powering it with his massive arms. The blow hammers Jofram to one side, cracking ribs, and nearly pulling the hair from Orin's skull.

STONE-FACED KILLA

I can't tell from the map what all is area through which Jayse would have to "rock-swim". Is everything up-hill from the avalanche this way?

Either way…

Jayse struggles against the compulsion to barrel down on the cyclops to help the dangling Jofram. Mostly likely only get yourself cut in two, he thinks. Dismissing the urge, Jayse does his best to climb/swim against the sliding, churning rocks… all of his will and energy focusing on finding some decent footing up-hill.

Stand: Try to get to the edge of the rock-slide area… using Climb if possible, but Swim if that's the more appropriate skill. Climb 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 13 + 1 = 34. (Swim check would be 2 lower.)
Move: Stand up (if clear of the rock-slide area.
