Spellcraft cloak: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 vs DC 18
"Oh, hey, this is a cloak of the elvenkind. Very nice, but not my style really." he passes it on. He nods when Heinrich takes the dagger and is very pleased at the coins.
When Tristain starts talking about death, he sort of glazes over and doesn't really listen, just enjoys the timber of the speech. He smiles and nods until all the sex acts are brought in. He laughs and shakes his head, "You are a very creative man Tristain. I'm not sure you're right, but it's a pleasant thought."
He too follows Albert to the north, ready for anything... he hopes!
Albert Hazred
Albert leads the way fully expecting more skum and zombies to bar their path. "Them dogs ain't around or barking at us, that's a good thing, but let's beware of them creatures springing an ambush on us."

LOL, Tristain
Al and Kyffin lead the way through the door, finding a small kitchen fitted with a cabinet and a stone worktable. A blackened iron cauldron hangs in the fireplace. A set of stairs leads up and another door opens to the courtyard.
Back in the earlier room, Heinrich has a sudden fright however, as his reflection seems to crawl out of the mirror! Before he can react, it slashes at him with a blade, but somehow manages to just scratch his armor, cutting nothing but fabric.
It actually appears to be a mirror image of Heinrich, as a slight blemish in his facial hair is on the opposite side in the new version.

Seeing a Heinrich turn and heinrun away through the mirror, Tristain casts Detect Magic to examine the mirror while trying of think of a monster ability that allows mirror walk type stuff.
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 Spellcraft Is the mirror magical, if not what knowledge for the not-Heinrich?
Kyffin Rhees
Sorry your flight was cancelled. I hope your travel improves!
Kyffin draws black his blade for another attack when the creature disappears! He almost smashes the mirror until he sees Tristain investigating it. He tries to help casting Detect Magic and reading the auras.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 In the future, may I aid Tristain's Spellcraft rolls? Or do I always need to make my own?
Unfortunately he's of little aid.
motteditor RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16
The mirror does not have any aura in and of itself.
It could be a soulsliver, an extradimensional shapechanger that lurks in the half-dimensions behind mirrors and can assume the appearance of other creatures. It could certainly be something else too -- some type of doppelganger, but you recall hearing a proverb about thinking of horses when you hear hooves -- and not centaurs -- so a soulsliver would make as much sense as anything here does.
Sure, I'll allow aid other for Spellcraft. You can point out things he might miss in an aura, I guess...
Tristain the Chalker
Tristain doesn’t know what the creature was, but does think it’s a good idea to smash the mirror into pieces so small that it couldn’t come through it again. And then he does so.
Tristain waits to see what others do after that.
Kyffin Rhees
Kyffin nods when the mirror is broken. "Might not be that mirror, but at least it's one less source for him." he looks at all the shards on the floor, "I hope."
He heads to the next door and, when everyone is ready and Albert is in front, cracks it open, scimitar in hand.
motteditor RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16
Kyffin and the others return to what they were doing before faux-Heinrich attacked, looking around the small kitchen fitted with a cabinet and a stone worktable. A blackened iron cauldron hangs in the fireplace. A set of stairs leads up.
The cabinet here contains enough kitchen tools and cutlery for a couple of cooks, and enough dishes and flatware for about two dozen diners. The cauldron in the fireplace contains a greasy residue and some discarded humanoid bones.
There are stairs leading up here; there's the courtyard, where you know there are dogs; and there's a stairway leading down you previously bypassed. (Plus the "unopenable" file cabinets.)
Heinrich Ulster
"Great gods. Next time I will let someone else have the vanity mirror." Heinrich tries to bandage his wounds. "I fear I have bled out all my vanity." He pulls his extract of Cure Light Wounds and downs it. HEAL!: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

If the stairs leading up go somewhere we haven't been, let's go up.
Kyffin looks a little confused, "Anyone know where these lead?" he gestures to the stairs up.
If the party has been there, he suggests going down. "No sense in messing with the dogs if we don't have to."
Tristain the Chalker
Tristain agrees, stopping his wall-bonking for enough time to nod at Kyffin.
”We should leave the dogs be. No sense in bringing more trouble upon ourselves,” Tris comments. ”Besides these dogs probably are weird in some way, like they meow instead of bark or shoot bees from their mouths.”
motteditor RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16
Everything in the room at the top of the stairs is in disarray. Overturned and broken furniture litters the floor, and sprays of dried blood mark the room’s stone walls. A cracked mirror hangs on the eastern wall at the top of the stairs to this room.
A portrait of an aging couple lies amid bloodied and torn bedclothes near a large double bed. The room’s wardrobe stands open, its contents spilled out in front of its mahogany doors. It is clear that in addition to a fight in this room, someone rifled through the belongings in search of something.
A secret cache under the floor planks holds a pouch with 22 sp, 88 gp, and three freshwater pearls (worth 100 gp each).
You discover a key stuck to the underside of one of the desk’s drawers with a wad of dark red wax.
Albert Hazred
Albert stands guard while the others search the messy room for clues. "If them things wrecked this room, but left the file cabinet closed, then they either found what their scummy leaders were looking for, or missed something important."
Tristain the Chalker
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 Perception
”Hey! Look what I found!” Tristain pulls out a pouch after prying up a plank. ”I think it’s money. Loot. Or probably a bag of poop, knowing this place...” Tristain passes the bag to Heinrich.
”Maybe we should try bashing the cabinets open?” Tristain asks, then thinks more. ”Or...we should burn it open! That’ll work too.” Tristain looks around to see if anyone else thinks his good idea is a good idea, because it is one.
Kyffin Rhees
"Let's wait to set fire to things until we've cleared the place. No sense in destroying it all." Kyffin suggests. He keeps watch while the others search, worried the mirror man was going to return - and fully healed to boot. He watches the mirror carefully as well as the door.
When folks are finished, he asks, "So where to from here?"
Tristain the Chalker
Quill smashes the mirror a bit more, trying to leave no pieces big enough for evil Heinrich to crawl through. He looks around, trying to answer Kyffin’s question.
Motte, is the overall map updated? Hard to me to figure out where we’ve been or not. And did you mention there was a downstairs way too? If so, let’s finish this level then go down there?
motteditor RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16
Map is now updated (I "uncovered" the courtyard, though you've still not been in there because of the dogs); this was the last room on the second floor (where I now have the arrow pointing). Yes, there is a way downstairs, where you earlier spotted tracks from to the dining room. And I've now replaced the fort map with the basement, so ignore most of what I just wrote in this comment...
Descending cautiously down the stairs, you open a door into the fort's subterranean levels. The walls of this cool and surprisingly dry room are lined with sturdy shelves laden with chopped wood. A couple of axes sit propped in the corner, and a small hatchet is driven into a stump used to split smaller logs and make kindling.
With no clear difference between the two doors, you decide to try one and discover it's locked. A quick check reveals you could open it with the keys you took off the skum the previous day, or you could try the other door.
1d2 ⇒ 2
Albert Hazred
Albert stands at guard with his shield and blade ready as Kyffin prepares to open the door. "If we find an outhouse, or whatever crapping hole them skum use, we outta break that mirror into that thing."
motteditor RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16
The other door opens as you turn it.
The many wooden shelves in the room it leads into are stacked with wooden crates, paper-wrapped packets, and small clay jars sealed with wax. Smoked trout and other dried fish hang from metal hooks fixed to the ceiling. A number of boxes and containers have been emptied and smashed, and now lie in pieces on the floor, along with discarded fish bones and other refuse.
The cause of the mayhem is mmediately apparent: Three skum are rummaging through the pantry. One skum tears into the side of a large smoked trout, while another is using a small pry bar to open a crate of dried figs. All three turn as the door opens and immediately move to attack.
