With Honaire at her side, Estra lights a torch, hoping fire will burn away the evil. Dr. Quolorum tries and fails to free himself from the vines. Mathos freezes in place as the writhing branches surround him. Elena compliments those closest to her, hoping her positive attitude will cut through the angry claws. Her blade sweeps through the tall grass without striking a branch, and she becomes entangled. Fran grants a bit of luck to the hapless professor.
Holding The Herald for now.
Whole map is difficult terrain, 20% concealment. Trying a new format out. Who likes vertical?

The area on the map outlined in green is under the effects of an entangle spell. Characters entering or ending their turn in the are must make a DC 13 Reflex save or become entangled. A DC 13 Strength or Escape Artist check as a move action is enough to break free. Failing either check results in 1 point of damage.
This is the affected area of a haunt. It can be damaged by either positive energy (channeled, holy water, cure spells) or by fire.

Rhasuel catches the drift when the Herald channels positive energy into the area and it doesn't heal anyone. He casts a curative spell, wades into the tangle of weeds and delivers his spell to the pestilence.

Damn holy people serving their damn holy gods! With a snarl, Gulch tries to leave the area, knowing there isn't anything for him to do here.
Strength Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 so close
Gulch breaks free for a moment, but the grasping branches are quick to reestablish their hold upon him! "Ge' off me!" he commands as he writhes around.
Wormling does his best to fling bolts of acid against the branches holding the Professor, hoping to aid him any way he can. "Professor, get out of there! How can we help him?!" he cries out in the loudest voice he can muster.

The Herald wades into the grasping thicket and lets forth a blast of holy energy. Rather than feel the warm, healing light, you see the gnarled branches blacken and wither as the evil spirits are driven from the area. Rhasuel calls forth his own healing magic in anticipation of renewed growth, but it does not occur. The haunt has been neutralized.
As close as you are now, most of the party can see inside the crater. Those that can't see, can hear. Red, slimy, shifting ectoplasm bubbles and churns inside the crater. Surrounding the ectoplasm, a mass of twisted hands and angry faces are formed in the dirt. Unlike those in the previous crater, these shapes convulse and wail with hateful life. As you watch, the ectoplasm splits into three distinct blobs and begins to take form.
The wails from the angry figures echo, "Aaaah! Woooaaahh! Diiiieeee... Release ussss! Aieeeee!"
Rhasuel, the haunt was neutralized before you acted. You are now holding a charge of cure light wounds and may deliver it as a standard action or you may deliver it to The Herald, Gulch, or Elena as a free action now.
The whole map is difficult terrain, and all attacks have 20% miss chance. Bold may act!

After Rhasuel (1), Mathos (2), Dr. Quolorum (3), Honaire (4), Estra (5), Fran + Mr. Sunshine (6&7), and The Herald (8), it’s Elena’s turn (9).
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Those things must have malicious intent! Evil will not triumph here today! No, not while Elena White lives and breathes!
Move Action: Elena isn’t sure what exactly is going on in the crater, but she moves forward to protect her allies from harm. With the aggressive shrubbery disposed of, Elena moves unhindered 5 feet (diagonal) towards the forming blobs (through the difficult terrain.) See map. Elena doesn't want to get ectoplasm on her armor so she doesn't traverse into the crater.
Free Action: In a voice full of gusto and self-assurance, Elena heroically shouts: ”By the goodness of Iomedae, I’ll protect my allies until my dying breath!” She hopes everyone - including creatures far, far away - can hear. Fear not, friends! I will be your shield!
Standard Action: To solidify her claim to serving Iomedae, Elena shifts her footing and lifts up her shield. Elena’s shield has the insignia of Iomedae engraved on it and she wants it to be one of the first things the blobs see when they finish solidifying. Elena is defending herself. (Total Defense: +4 Dodge Bonus to AC for 1 round.)

Move Action: None? Unless Elena needs to shift her weight from holding her shield to swinging her sword?
Smite Evil 1/day: Once per day, a paladin can call out to the powers of good to aid her in her struggle against evil. As a swift action, the paladin chooses one target within sight to smite. If this target is evil, the paladin adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack rolls and adds her paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses. Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess.

-- COMBAT OVER --

Professor Quolorum |

Dr. Quolorum strokes Mr. Sunshine and watches pensively as the team dispatches the ectoplasmic threats. With the area clear, he happily rushes forward and examines the fresh lightning strike.
"Ohhh... Mm-Hmm... Fascinating!... fascinating...This will do"
He pulls out two strange-looking vials from his pack and harvests some ectoplasm into his newly developed storage containers.
"Thank you all for your hard work tonight, Pathfinders. I couldn't have done it without you! I'll take these samples back to the lab for study while you attend to the... other matters." He looks pointedly at Mathos, "I might even let you sample the ointment I've been developing. For your trouble, of course."
He starts trekking toward the path leading into town, and calls back to the group, "Get some rest tonight. There is still much to do!"

"It's...it's over? Thank goodness," Fran says with a sigh of relief as she heads back to Mr. Sunshine to make sure that he's okay. "That seemed more difficult to take care of than the skulls in Dunhob did, but I'm glad we were able to do it!"

Sitting against a tree on a grassy patch, Elena leans her head against the tree trunk. "Those unholy abominations put up a fight," Elena comments. She turns her head to look at Mathos, "Thanks for the heal, ally." Perhaps Asmodeus worshipers aren't as bad as I thought they were. Elena pulls out a scrap of cloth and begins cleaning her longsword of any lingering goo.
Elena listens to the conversations around her while she sits. Mathos' heal helped significantly but she was still injured. Elena takes her time cleaning her blade thoroughly before returning it to its sheath. Once her blade is clean and stored, Elena removes a pink silken handkerchief from under her shirt and wipes her face. Gross. I'm going to need a bath tonight.
--------
Later:
Elena gets to her feet, "Professor Quolorum, did you get the samples?" Elena uses Detect Evil and looks around for the angry faces trapped in the earth. "Did we free those poor tortured souls? I saw something when the ectoplasm attacked me..." Elena pauses for a moment remembering what seemed like a flash of memory. "There was a collage of confusing images - A windswept mountain pass, a cave filled with an eerie green glow, and a pulsing fungal creature brooding in the dark." Elena turns to Quolorum, "Do you think it means something, Professor?"

He gazes at the still form of the angry faces, "The energy might be neutralized for now, but I don't think we managed to free whatever is trapped here. I suspect it will remain, unless we find the source of these Phenomena."

"Illirigarde Manor..." Fran muses. "Oh, I wish I could see it!
