@Roland: just a 20% miss chance if someone attacks you.

Working together the party is able to bring down the phase spider!

Out of combat!

Recognizing that this observatory is quite hazardous, you step back to study it for a moment from the adjoining room.

Figuring out the complicated arcane technology to shut down the orrery's mechanisms would be quite difficult. It would take several hours of study spent dodging the many dangerous effects and only someone truly skilled in arcane arts (Spellcraft) would be able to understand it.

If you have at least 4 ranks in Spellcraft, you can aid another to give the leader a +2 bonus as usual.

Fortunately, you have several means at your disposal to make the daunting task easier: instructional steles inscribed in Azlanti hover in stationary positions around the room and a comprehend languages spell or a very good Linguistics check could help you decipher them.

Furthermore, an identify spell would be very useful.

The instructional steles may provide further information about what is going on in this room.

AIUI, damage taken is conserved, not HP remaining. For example, if a 6th level character takes 38 points and is at 10/48, taking 2 points of CON damage in addition will leave them at 4/42; another 2 points of CON damage will put them unconscious at -2/36.

It took you several hours to row out here.

Pai spends a few hours studying the mechanisms and although she thinks she almost has it, it's just not quite making sense to her yet.

As Pai works, you all note that the island is starting to have further effects on you:

Pai:

The three available lectures were:

Aulus: Observant Council Most High, his speech on solar calculation, Lesson 3 of 6
Ossoryol: Master of Lenses & Optics, the Master's final lecture on celestial alignment, Part the All.
Eninthander: Grand Provost of Spheres & Glyphs, his platform on the implications of solar sigils & wards, Lesson 2 of 3.

You already heard the lecture of Aulus but you'll need more Azlanti (or scum) blood to make the lecture pool work again.

As you exit the observatory and head back towards the graveyard, you notice 1d12 ⇒ 9 lights flash around you before quickly dying out.

You start to head east to the several locations on that side of the island you have yet to explore. Along the way you notice the same phenomenon; another 1d12 ⇒ 4 lights flash on briefly before fading away.

DC 16 KN (dungeoneering):
Every trapper and bog farmer living near marshes or swamps has his own name for these faintly glowing balls of light—jack o' the lanterns, corpse candles, walking fires, pine lights, spooklights, rushlights—but all recognize them as dangerous predators and false guides in the darkness.

Evil creatures that feed on the strong psychic emanations of terrified creatures, will-o'-wisps delight in tempting gullible travelers into dangerous situations. In the wild lands where they're most common, will-o'-wisps favor simple tactics like positioning themselves over cliffs or quicksand where they can easily be mistaken for lanterns (especially if they can set their traps near actual signal lanterns), allowing them to lure unwary travelers into perilous situations. On rare occasions, will-o'-wisps seeking easier pickings will move into a city and take up residence near gallows or follow along invisibly behind an army in order to harvest the fear of the dying men; why the vast majority choose to remain in the swamps where victims are scarce remains a mystery. Will-o'-wisps only use their electric shock ability under extreme duress, preferring to let other creatures or hazards claim their victims while they float nearby and feast.

It is perhaps strange to you that these do not seem to be aggressive, but should also be seen as a blessing. This many will-o'-wisps could tear your party apart.

"That's the most will o wisps I've ever seen! Those things are horribly evil, you know. The weird thing is, these do not seem to be aggressive. That's really good for us, because all of those things could easily rip us apart. I'd say we avoid all of them and stay out of their territory."
