| 4th level Seoni |
Very well. I think you have the right idea. We can just surprise them. Lead us in. What would you suggest?
Seoni doesn't know message. Too bad. It could rock, right here.
Zora Magda
|
Zora pockets the potion of cure light wounds and Small centipede poison (4). Then she checks out the rope. Any chance this opens the portcullis?
"I suggest we take the hall."
| DM Panic |
The group proceeds quietly down the hall, eyes open and alert for signs of danger.
M: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Z: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 = 14
A statue of a woman with a water urn stands in the hallway, which upon closer inspection from the duo seems rather uninteresting.
Continuing down the hall, you all reach a bend that heads left revealing seven doors before it bends again to the right.
Lots of doors to choose from.
Zora Magda
|
Zora listens at the first one and checks for traps.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Disable Device: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
| Standard Pregen |
A heavily muscled Kellid female, wielding a sword bigger then she is, hustles down the corridor behind the group.
"Sorry I'm late guys! I can see you have already been having some fun..."
Luke_Parry, reporting in :-)
Zora Magda
|
"Well, about time you made it. We had to start the fun without you, but clearly we could have used some muscle. Ready to see what's behind door #1?"
Welcome!
The Maiden of Copper
|
"Greetings, madam." The Maiden bows to her. "You may call me the maiden of copper, or Charis. Whichever you prefer, I will respond to both."
She draws her bow. "Now then, let the action begin."
| DM Panic |
I'll put Amiri in the front line with Charis after Zora does her door checks, but will assume Zora and Charis are still going down corridors in tandem in the lead for trap-spotting purposes.
Zora detects only silence from beyond the door and gives a nod to Charis and Amiri to open the door.
This chamber is a small barracks with a pair of double bunks and a small privy in the north wall. The eastern portion of the room is partitioned into a pair of cells with doors made from iron bars. Inside each is a shoddy bunk and a rusty bucket.
| DM Panic |
Initiative:
Amiri: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Maiden of Copper: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Seoni: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Sigil: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Zora: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Mouther: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
As you all step into the room to give it a quick search, something shapeless oozes out from one of the beds.
The horrid mass of eyes, mouths, and formless flesh stares in all directions, its countless maws yammering ceaselessly.
Round 1

| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Rut row.
Zora moves around behind it, drawing her short sword along the way, and then attacks.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Damage: 1d4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (4) = 5
| DM Panic |
Zora moves in and sinks her sword into the creature's amorphous mass, seeming to barely nick it with her blade.
(immune to sneak attack)
The creature begins to babble as a cacophony of maddening sound echoes through the room.
@Everyone: DC13 Will Save or you're confused.
Roll 1d4:
1 = Act normal
2 = Do nothing but babble
3 = Deal 1d8+Strength damage to self
4 = Attack nearest creature
Then the dozens of slavering mouths all snap at the halfling rogue.
Mouth #1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 for 1d4 ⇒ 3
Mouth #2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 for 1d4 ⇒ 4
Mouth #3: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16 for 1d4 ⇒ 4
Mouth #4: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 for 1d4 ⇒ 1
Mouth #5: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 for 1d4 ⇒ 3

Mouth #5 CONFIRM: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 for 1d4 ⇒ 1
Spittle @ Amiri: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Several mouths latch onto poor Zora (11 damage), leaving several dripping wounds behind.
Then the creature defies all possibility as it manages to spit a foul smelling mass at Amiri's face.
@Amiri: DC18 Fort save or blinded for 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds.
Round 1
23 Zora : Moves, stabs for 1
22 Mouther (-1): Gibbers, bites Zora for 11, spits at Amiri

Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23.
Well, at least it attacked me, which means I automatically try to kill it ;-)
AoO (since it made a ranged attack?): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10, for 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (2, 5) + 7 = 14 damage.
A weird look crosses Amiri's face, and she starts raging, attempting to annihilate the creature that just spat at her.
Bastard sword, rage, flank: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 2 + 2 - 2 = 28, for 2d8 + 7 + 3 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 7 + 3 + 6 = 25 damage.

6 attacks! Dang...

Well, I just waded in over my head. Time to find an escape!
The Maiden of Copper

The Maiden rushes in, only to hear this thing start talking about dishes. Or, was it the rain? Or diamond dust? Ooo, diamonds.
Will Save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
She quickly snaps out of it and starts firing arrows from her bow, now that she has a good target to use it against!
Masterwork Composite Longbow (+2 Str), Point Blank Shot, Deadly Aim : 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 1 - 1 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 6
"I'm not the kind to wash dishes, sadly."
| DM Panic |
Amiri's eyes roll back, but she's not confused enough to not murder something spitting at her as her oversized weapon cuts a deep gash in the creature. Sigil attacks himself while Seoni's magical bolt hits the creature and the Maiden struggles to land an arrow in the melee.
Zora is up to lead off round 2, but I'll go ahead and post for the mouther and Zora can post round 2 and round 3 actions next post.
The mouther immediately turns its attention from the minor halfling threat to the raging woman, with each mouth in turn seeking to latch onto poor Amiri's exposed flesh (normally a good thing against male opponents).
Assuming Amiri is AC16 while raging.
Mouth #1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 for 1d4 ⇒ 1 and CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16 HIT
Mouth #2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 for 1d4 ⇒ 1 and CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Mouth #3: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 for 1d4 ⇒ 3 and CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 HIT + Grapple
Mouth #4: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 for 1d4 ⇒ 1 and CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 HIT
Mouth #5: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13 for 1d4 ⇒ 3 and CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Mouth #6: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 for 1d4 ⇒ 2 and CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 HIT
Mouth #3 begins a grapple, causing Amiri AC to go down by -2 along with mouther attacks by -2 (it's a wash between those two, but note all others will be attacking a lower AC).
7 damage from mouths
As mouth after mouth lashes at the barbarian, you all begin to hear a disgusting sucking noise as four babbling grins each latch onto Amiri.
The remaining mouths all cackle gleefully.
Another DC13 Will save from everyone to avoid confusion for their next actions.
Round 1
23 Zora : Moves, stabs for 1
22 Mouther (-1): Gibbers, bites Zora for 11, spits at Amiri

Managing to resist the maddening song of the creature, Amiri, still raging, tries to take control of the grapple.

Sigil Lightstrider

Pulling his spear from his own foot, Sigil hobbles to the doorway and holds up his arm to display the holy birthmark upon it.
"Sarenrae, protect us!"
Channel Energy (exclude monster) 1/8 expended: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8

It isn't clear what she's saying, but what she's doing is very straightforward.

Round 2 (guess I missed making an action)
Zora backs off a bit, and throws her short sword at the odd creature, but it slips in her bloodied fingers and veers off to the side. She then pulls out her sling staff.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 7 - 4 = 6
Round 3 (we have to keep making Will saves?)
Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Zora loads her sling with a bullet and fires at one of the eyes.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Confirm?: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage, if confirmed: 1d6 ⇒ 5
| DM Panic |
Seoni and Zora's respective missiles thud into the creature's bruised flesh while the Maiden struggles to land an arrow through the creature's rubbery skin.
Mouth after mouth lurches at Amiri but the barbarian warrioress manages to dodge all but one (3 damage to Amiri). Luckily, it doesn't latch on.
The creature continues its maddening babble, yet the Pathfinders seem to be resistant to its effect at this point with the thrill of battle and the risk of death at hand.
You save until you make one. It will babble each round as a free action applying 1-round duration confusion effects to people who haven't made their first save yet.

| DM Panic |
Amiri stands free and as she brings her sword down in a heavy arc, an arcane bolt from Seoni whizzes past, stirring the barbarian's hair.
WHOOSH
Little pieces of gibbering mouth explode onto Amiri just as the edge of her oversized sword was a mere inch away from cleaving the hideous aberration in half.
Yes, it would be fair so say, Seoni stole Amiri's kill.
As the gibbering subsides, the room feels quiet again, which feels slightly strange giving the echoing babbles that drove you all mad moments earlier.
Beyond the beds and chamber pot (slightly full), there appears to be nothing else of note in this room.
Back to the hallway and door selection... your GM's educated guess is that you'd most likely open the first of the trio at your right.
| Standard Pregen |
Amiri pulls a blanket from one of the beds, and uses it to clean chunks of aberrant flesh and blood from her sword, before heading back out into the corridor.
"Well, I am glad *that* is over! That was extremely unpleasant..."
The Maiden of Copper
|
Charis grumbles as she looks for her arrows. One of them remains intact.
Even is good: 3d2 ⇒ (2, 1, 1) = 4
"My apologies, I felt rather useless there. Thank you for your aid."
Zora Magda
|
"Yah, me too. I tend to concentrate on precision strikes rather than brute force, but this... thing... seemed to not have any points of weakness. It is clearly not natural, though, and I don't even want to know what caused it to exist."
Zora nods in agreement to the door selection, and proceeds to check for traps and sounds.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
| DM Panic |
Clattering dinnerware, plates and the low voices of several men and women talking.
Something, something, Jaris's poison...
Something, Tarrin, something, initiation rites...
The conversation continues, but it's hard to make out details through the heavy door. Perhaps a good thing as the thickness of the door surely prevented the folks on the far side from overhearing the nearby fight with the gibbering mouther.
Zora Magda
|
Zora motions to the others to back up a bit.
"It sounds like a dinner party in there. Definitely a few people talking, both men and women. I am surprised they didn't hear that last battle. What do you want to do?"
The Maiden of Copper
|
"They didn't hear us? They didn't hear the cries for help? No wonder I've never heard of these Splinters. Then again, they didn't mind a..." she shudders, "Whatever we just fought- in their presence."
"It may be better for us to find an alternate entrance to the room. I'm not in the mood to charge in."
Zora Magda
|
"They sound busy, so maybe we can scout the other doors first."
Zora goes to the next door to listen and check for traps.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
| DM Panic |
Zora detects nothing on or beyond the door across the hall, and giving a nod to Amiri and Charis, the duo step up to open the door.
This chamber is someone’s personal quarters. A comfortable bed stands in the southwest corner. Several small keepsakes, including a couple of small leather journals, clutter the wall shelves.
The keepsakes on the shelves include a gold chess piece worth 25 gp, an ivory comb worth 40 gp, and a statuette of a woman with a lyre worth 15 gp.
| DM Panic |
Zora moves on to the next door and listens again, while checking for traps.
Zora Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Finding no traps, and hearing nothing beyond, she gives Amiri and Charis the cue to open that door as well.
The double bunks and footlockers in the alcoves of this large room suggest it serves as a barracks. The walls are decorated with simple paintings and murals, which include sketches of building, temple, and ruin layouts with notations suggesting how to get past obstacles and traps. Two small privy chambers stand against the southern wall, and doors exit to the southeast and the northwest.
Three men seem to be resting within this room, one sitting on a footlocker sharpening a blade, one lounging in a bed, and one apparently returning from the privy with some reading material in hand.
The one sharpening his weapon rises.
"Hey! You're not supposed to be here..."
The other two begin to dart towards weapons as well.
Zora Magda

"Someone likes their knick-knacks."
Zora does the same routine at the next door.
