Randall Quickstep |
Bah!
Randall slips between two of his attackers, placing him behind the drow facing Njord (Mr. Red) and works on excising organs dead men no longer need. Like kidneys.
Attack: 1d20 + 17 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 17 + 7 = 41 including inspiration, good hope, flanking, and haste bonuses
Damage: 1d3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 2 = 5 and Sneak Attack: 7d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 6, 1, 1, 6, 3, 6) + 7 = 32
Iterative Attack: 1d20 + 12 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 12 + 7 = 28 including inspiration, good hope, flanking, and haste bonuses
Damage: 1d3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 2 = 5 and Sneak Attack: 7d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 1, 6, 4, 6) + 7 = 30
DM Feral |
I know it's been a while since you guys used that feat but that's not quite how it works Jametor. If you're contributing your spell to Asht's you don't get to roll damage separately. Essentially you're sacrificing your spell and your action to power up Asht's spell turning his chain lightning into chain smokening(?). It also bumps the save DC.
Reflexes: 5d20 ⇒ (3, 20, 7, 6, 1) = 37
Empowered by Jametor, Asht's lightning transforms into a current of caustic super-heated air. One of the drow warriors partially avoids the animated smoke but the other four are badly burned and left choking and blind. Randall capitalizes on their handicap and excises the kidneys from two of the dark elves with his tiny dagger, killing them.
Njord and Firiel are up. Randall, I think you forgot your haste attack.
Njord Bjornson |
Njord steps toward the surviving drow and brandishes his noqual blade.
Primary (haste, heroism): 1d20 + 18 + 1 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (10) + 18 + 1 + 2 - 3 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 6 = 17
Iterative: 1d20 + 13 + 1 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (3) + 13 + 1 + 2 - 3 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 6 = 17
Second Iterative: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 + 2 - 3 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 6 = 23
Haste Attack: 1d20 + 18 + 1 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (8) + 18 + 1 + 2 - 3 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 6 = 18
DM Feral |
Never mind Randall! The remaining drow are dead.
The big ulfen makes short work of the nearly helpless drow warriors cutting them down to a man.
When the smoke clears the shaitan is visibly relieved. She kicks the slain drow at her feet dismissively. Terran: “Well done! Please, close the gates behind you so we can discuss your reward."
1d20 ⇒ 14
Xiddik |
Did the Confusion work? It doesn't much matter, but hey, I spent a slot on it...
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 23 - 5 ⇒ (1) + 23 - 5 = 19
Xiddik smiles and performs a deep curtsy. "Oh, please," she says in Common, hoping she'll be understood, "you must allow some introductions. We are in the presence of a...a blessed being of earth, and we would be performing shocking rudeness if not first giving our names before entering your lovely domi...dominci...home."
Bluff (deliver secret message): 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (3) + 23 = 26 To the Rest of the Party: "She's in a bit too much of a hurry to get us alone in there. Does it look clear? If not, tap my shoulder."
Fíriel Goldworthy |
Perceptling: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Sense Hedgepeeg: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Fíriel gives Randall a hug, glad he's okay, missing the shaitan's suspicious words and mannerisms completely. As she notices Xiddik's tail twitching, though, she frowns slightly and motions Prickles to go investigate.
Jametor Darksbane |
Do I still understand based on my last roll or is it a separate thing.
SM: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (14) + 18 = 32
Perception: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (2) + 20 = 22
Yay, both made, since I just need 21 to beat the SM upcharge if I don't understand Terran. Also, I remember now why I was the one who went first on the spells.
Linguini check, in case needed.: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
"Oh great and powerful shaitan, we come in peace, but we were not born this morning. It is our experience almost all the denizens of this underdark want us dead..or at least writhing in pain. I am hoping you speak the common we speak on the surface or the common the drow speak down here. Otherwise, it might be a little slow in the communication piece." Jametor says slowly in Common, repeating in Undercommon.
I though I was complementing Xiddik's language choices and apparently didn't think to include Terran..
Asht'el |
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Asht'el looks on puzzled as his friends don't all leap to follow the shaitan's suggestion. When Xiddik's tail twitches in subtle alarm, Asht'el manages to disguise his suprise and join in the conversation.
"It is as my small friend says, we should make our introductions," he says with a half-bow as he stays outside the gates. "I am Asht'el, and I am pleased you are no longer menaced by those dark elves." By the way Asht'el musses his hair as he speaks, Xiddik can tell quite clearly that the ifrit has received the message and is ready to play along.
Bluff to pass message back to Xiddik: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
Randall Quickstep |
Perception DC 32: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (9) + 21 = 30 +4 if canny observer applies; Edit: I guess I need to know unless I can use one of the other attempts as an aid another check.
Sense Motive DC 16+5: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 I don't think canny observer works here, but it might...
Randall reads the earth-genie's request like a familiar children's tale and makes no move toward the door.
In common (because it's really all I have), "It is our honor to aid you. We have no great liking for those that menaced you. We need no reward, but we did hope to speak to you, thus our arrival." If she doesn't understand, he will try again in Elven. He assumes Halfling isn't worth the attempt.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
DM Feral |
"Of course I speak the Common tongue of the mortal races", the giant woman says in reply to Jametor's question.
"Welcome Asht'el. Welcome little halflings and kobold. You have all done a great thing by dispatching those dark intruders. Please, shut the doors. I mean you no harm. I look forward to learning more about all of you."
1d20 ⇒ 20
Xiddik |
Sense Motive: 1 + 23 = 24
"I'm sure that's true," Xiddik says, smiling. "And I think we have already learned some wondrous things about you, great earth spirit."
Bluff: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (9) + 23 = 32 Secret Message to Party: "SHE IS NOT A FRIEND. GET READY TO FIGHT."
Jametor Darksbane |
SM: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (18) + 18 = 36
"Oh, Shaitan, why do you deceive, we have saved you from the drow, or did we? I am not silver tongued like some of my companions. I will speak plainly. Why are you here, in this place and why do you mean us harm? I do not recall that the Shaitan are inherently evil. Speak plainly, we will hear you and decide." Jametor says.
Randall Quickstep |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Randall is curious about the insistence on the doors, but decides they can be examined another time. He starts to move around the room with the thought that they should spread out - he does keep an eye out for large blocks of stone that might be dropped from the ceiling, of course...
Perception: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (13) + 21 = 34 Another +11 if vs traps
Njord Bjornson |
Noting the increasing concern from his friends, especially Xiddik's subtle warning, Njord sips a vial of thick purple sludge.
False Lifes: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
DM Feral |
The shaitan's stony features twist into a very familiar scowl. "I mean you harm because you need to die. Was that not clear? Here, let me help you along!"
Asht'el: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Fíriel: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Jametor: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Njord: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Randall: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Xiddik: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 = 29
Definitely a Shaitan: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Everyone but Jametor is up.
Fíriel Goldworthy |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
With a fearsome rawr, Prickles jumps out from behind Fíriel and removes his mask. As the beaten copper skull is moved away to reveal vicious hedgehog teeth, it suddenly seems to take on a life of its own! It flies toward the "shaitan" and closes its gaping jawbone on the enemy's nose! A moment later it spins in the air and zips back to its original spot on the hedgehog's face.
Touch Attack vs FF: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
If that hits, he has to make a DC 20 Fort save or take 130 points of damage. If he makes the save, he takes 3d6 + 13 ⇒ (6, 2, 6) + 13 = 27 damage instead.
I'll hold off on posting Fíriel's action until I know the results of Prickles'.
Asht'el |
Awesome move and awesome post, O!
"Put this thing down, would you, Njord?" Asht'el says, stepping forward and tapping the ursine warrior on the back.
Cast greater heroism on the bar.
Jametor - I'm happy to follow your lead next round with an elemental combo spell, or I can use shadow conjuration to try to drop a nice azata or something next to our new friend.
All - remember you're still hasted! Including the faux-shaitan. :(
DM Feral |
Fort: 1d20 ⇒ 15 ...That still fails. Save your spell Asht.
The shaitan shrieks in agony as the fearsome hedgehog's floating mask literally tears her face off by the nose. She crashes to the ground dead.
Her remains rapidly shrink and change color until they no longer resemble that of a statuesque shaitan but a drow woman in dark robes. A pool of blood quickly forms around where her face should be.
Encounter over!
Fíriel Goldworthy |
That... was awesome. Best 22k ever spent, even if it never works again.
Prickles lets out another rawr, this time of exultation, as he wiggles around in what can only be a hedgehog victory dance. Fíriel, meanwhile, blinks and tries to figure out what just happened.
DM Feral |
I was hoping someone would do something. =(
Eventually the party moves forward to search the faceless drow's remains.
Loot: cloak of the bat, agile corrosive dagger +1, wand of dimension door (6 charges), wand of greater invisibility (6 charges), belt of constitution +4, bag of holding type II, headband of intellect +4, ring of protection +1, spellbook (contains all prepared spells, all wizard illusion spells from the PH up to 5th level, and four other spells of your choosing of levels 1 through 5), 200 gp.
I also revealed the rest of the room on the map.
Jametor Darksbane |
Jametor examines the magic items. He holds up the headband. "I have one of these, makes you smarter, also, I believe has an added enhancement." I believe the headband will increase a skill by the amount of hit points. It is the reason Jametor has really good Sense Motive and diplomacy, with bad charisma. FYI for those that don't want to look it up. I have one, no need for me to have another, unless i can wear it as a high arm band of Intellect.
Randall Quickstep |
I believe it is hit dice rather than hit points. It effectively replaces any ranks you might have in the skill with what you would have if you maxed out ranks in that skill. Or so I have played it in the past. Would an Int bump help our bar's alchemical talents? How about our bard's know-things checks?
Fíriel Goldworthy |
Is that magic dagger small, by any chance?
Prickles squeaks a few times, bravely volunteering to go scout ahead a bit. Just want to get us moving again; Randall's welcome to go as well. :)
Asht'el |
Asht'el hangs back as the scouty folks scout.
I would take the Con belt if no one else wants it, just to bump my odds of surviving things - but if someone who actually gets into melee on purpose wants it, that's fine. Would carry the wands to use as needed also. I say we spend the 200 gp on really nice hedgepeeg snacks, so he doesn't kill us with great ferocity.
Xiddik |
Xiddik eyes the body of the drow uneasily, glancing back toward the spinebeast with narrowed eyes. If the scrape marks are pointed out to her, she attempts to determine if the altar was moved from somewhere.
Survival: 10 + 15 = 25 I figure it's either some sort of secret door or the altar was actually relocated. Can't hurt to check.
Randall Quickstep |
Randall tags along with the brave hedgehog, shaking his head and grinning at the creature's heretofore unknown abilities. And look, how does a four-legged critter swagger like that?
Perception: 1d20 + 21 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 21 + 4 = 35 Including canny observer, but not trapfinding bonus; +7 for trap-spotting, which he will be looking for as they proceed, also
Muttering loud enough for his fellow scouts, but not to carry his voice far, "Yes, good eye, Prickles. What do you suppose is under or behind the altar?"
Randall Quickstep |
A wand of greater invisibility could be great fun for yours truly since I have the UMD to make it work. I have a Headband of Intelligence, but forget which skill it includes. I presume the priestess' headband will give two knowledge skills as that is generally the Paizo way. Unless our GM-bar is feeling generous as he always is...
Is there anything in the bag of holding II (I assume we have already been told everything, but I'm a rogue, I rummage through things.
The cloak of the bat intrigues me, but I always seem to have a cloak conflict. I am currently wearing a cloak of resistance +3. Does the cloak of the bat (or the cloak of resistance, for that matter) require attunement? That is, do I have to wear either of them for a set amount of time before they will work for me or can I switch them as needed - if no one makes a claim to the batty cloak, of course.
DM Feral |
2d12 ⇒ (1, 7) = 8
The drow's headband is keyed to linguistics and knowledge (nature). I don't know what yours was originally keyed to. You can't reverse engineer it from whatever skills you've got maxed?
The bag of holding contains assorted spell components, a large store of diamond dust (10k worth), and bunch of rat food.
Neither cloak requires attunement. You're free to swap them on/off whenever the situation arises.
Xiddik believes that the altar hasn't been moved from anyplace specific within the temple. Between her, Randall, and Prickles the party determines that the altar is not trapped and looks to have been dragged along the ground back and forth several times roughly three feet.
Njord Bjornson |
Njord hustles up the stairs and studies the altar. "Sure I'll give it a shot!"
Njord Bjornson |
"Everyone ready to see what's downstairs?"
DM Feral |
The party descends the stairs into a spacious cavern filled with a thin mist. Strange, purplish-blue light emanates from a number of large crystals jutting from the walls, illuminating the fog and creating a disorienting display of lights. To the south, a wide chasm bisects the cave, and on the far side the crystals grow much more enormous in size. At the far end of the cavern a roughly six-foot tall crystal pulses with light at the rhythm of a heartbeat.
Allies of my tormentors? a feminine voice asks as it drifts through the party's thoughts. Or something more?
Asht'el |
"If your tormentors are the drow and the fake shaitan we just killed upstairs, then no, we are not their allies," Asht'el replies reasonably. "So I guess that makes us something more. Who are you?"
Xiddik |
"We are much more," Xiddik says, grinning. Her grin fades slightly as she considers what all of this might mean. "What is become of you?"
Randall Quickstep |
Oh, I have the skills worked out in Hero Lab, but I'm borrowing another machine and haven't logged in to refresh my memory. Does anyone have concerns with Randall trying out the bat-cloak?
Randall leads with Prickles, as usual, searching for traps and letting the hedgehog have all the glory, but he draws up short in the room of crystals.
He tries to respond to the thought-speak. I hear you in my head, but I don't see you. If your tormentors were drow, I must compliment your skill with the stone blocks topside. Very effective.
DM Feral |
Yes, I am Haiten Bhaq and I am shaitan. I was keeper of this shrine until the dark elves betrayed my trust and trapped me here. I was a fool to expect mortals that consort with demons to uphold their agreements.
Their mistress ambushed me and overwhelmed me with her magic. Once I was defeated she bound me within this crystal. Her spell was crude... but effective and I have been unable to free myself.
