Just got home from a very long stint at work and I am barely ale to think at the moment, I am about to go to sleep so I can go back in tomorrow. This is just a post to let you know that I will most likely be unable to post for the next 24-36 hours or so. If I need to be NPC'd, no problem.

Okay, thanks for mentioning it, Longreach. Sleep well.

Bronx:

Spoiler:
Assuming that you did sidestep west, could you please clarify what you intend to do if the gnome/mushroom thing does something which would provoke an attack of opportunity, but which does not allow for a trip attempt?

Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

Davkul and Charles

Spoiler:

Seebo settles himself into quiet, meditative pose, in one corner of the room. Trying to watch the goings on as inconspicuously as possible.

Sorry for the lack of posts, home internet has been down

Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

Charles

Spoiler:
Bronx is going to move so to maintain his relative position to the creature. If it moves 5 ft to the west, so will Bronx. Bronx will do a regular attack with his scythe if the creature draws an AoO while prone (so can't be tripped). But he is also using his standard action to ready a trip should the creature get to its feet again.

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Bronx:

Spoiler:
The gnome/mushroom thing starts to crawl, determinedly, diagonally past you, heading southeast at first, away from the rock face, onto the part of the shelf just east of Bronx. This is not a five foot step, so provokes an attack of opportunity from you.

Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

Charles

Spoiler:
Attack of Opportunity: 1d20+5=7
He's prone right, so ... maybe, (yeah right)
Damage: 1d6+3=8

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Seebo & Davkul:

Spoiler:
You wait patiently, whilst the men search the room, going through everything methodically. At one point a couple of men with a stretcher remove the deceased from the bed, and take him away somewhere. At another point a short whispy human male, looking rather harrased arrives, exchanges hurried words with Orcbane, mutters a spell off a scroll, and surveys the room intently. He then exchanges more words with Orcbane, pointing at the glass and bedside water jug as he does so, then leaves the room in a hurry, apparently having somewhere else to be. At points Seebo and Davkul are asked to move aside, so the men can check the parts of the room where they have been located. The men seem mildly interested by the signs that papers have been burnt in the fireplace, but concern over this seems to be minimal.
At one point, the maid who discovered the body and disorder is summoned, for questioning, with the reluctant agreement of Mrs. Prestwick.
At length the investigation appears to be winding down, and Orcbane addresses the pair of you.
"Looks like you were right about the water-jug.", he says. "The only thing which we know to be missing, in terms of papers and possessions, is the guest's journal, which the fireplace would seem to account for. But if he wrote anything late last night, which either of you have pocketed," he seems to favour Seebo with a suspicious glance here, rather more han Davkul, "you would be wise to produce it now. Or if you have anything which you can tell me which you may know or suspect about the circumstances of his death or the hours immediately before it, it would demonstrate your willingness to be helpful to the authorities in this town."

Davkul:
If you make a DC 15 Spellcraft check, by the way:

Spoiler:
As you probably have surmised anyway, that was a Detect Poison spell (arcane casting) used by the man with the scroll.

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Nim:

Spoiler:
You can hear shuffling and scrunching, and Bronx and the gnome/mushroom thing moving around, further away from you, mixed with the sound of Bronx swishing his scythe, but you can't see any of it.

Bronx:

Spoiler:
The gnome/mushroom thing flattens itself into the snow for a moment, avoiding the swishing arc of your scythe, before dragging itself up into a more regular crawl position, and making it's way on. Having crossed past you to the east, it takes advantage, whilst you ready your scythe for another swing, to head on further south. Your pony, unnerved by the approach of this creature, takes a skittish step or two backwards, floundering slightly, in the snow. (Five foot step backwards, south).
If you want to say anything to Nim, (who still can't see) before the end of the round, the gnome/mushroom thing is still prone, with (effectively) two five foot squares between it and Nim, half left (due south) of the direction which Nim is currently facing (southwest). It is immediately southeast of you.

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Waiting here to check if Bronx has anything he wants to say to Nim before I give end of round summary and move to next round.

Seebo and Charles

Spoiler:

"The only suspicion I have that you have not touched on is that the man was most likely hiding from somebody. The clearest evidence of this is that he was using an assumed name. Pophilov is not a name, but the Undercommon word for 'nobody'. As a matter of fact, that is one of the major factors that piqued our interest."

Davkul stops for a second and starts to rub his chin in thought."Come to think of it, it could be that that attack on the inn last night was nothing more than a distraction so that somebody could come in here to poison his water. We ourselves are proof that his room is not difficult to find and get into."

Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

GM Charles and Davkul

Spoiler:

Seebo stands quietly to one side and lets Davkul have his say.
Thinking about what Davkul has said about last nights attack, and possibly even the gnome that disappeared into the plant. A distraction seems likely, another thought is whether or not, Fenwick, is the dead halfling from outside town.
More questions than answers.

Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

Nim and Charles

Spoiler:
Bronx will try to tell Nim which direction the creature is crawling.

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Seebo & Davkul:

Spoiler:
"That beetle business last night could have been a distraction? Hmmm. That's an interesting thought, but...." Orcbane trails off and seems to be thinking about something very hard for several moments.
Then he snaps out of it.
"Likely he was wanting not to be recognised by anyone he knew from the Sword Coast, in these parts, or mentioned by mutual acquaintances who might be travelling in these parts and glance randomly at a guest register." Orcbane seems less bothered by the false name than by the idea of an attack being orchestrated last night as a diversion to allow the poisoning of the water jug. "I don't hold by any gnome gods, priest, but I expect his employers- and relations- will be pleased to hear you did something. Take this with thanks." He extracts three gold coins from a pouch at his belt, and passes them to Seebo. "And if you have any further interesting ideas in the next couple of days, Davkul Gladdenstone, about this or any other matters, mention my name to any of the company, and hopefully you'll be taken seriously. I'll see that word is passed around to that effect as quickly as possible. Now if you'll excuse me, but pressing matters require my attention elsewhere in this gods forsaken town. Why everything has to get crazy all at once, I don't know."
He and his men turn to leave the room, leaving the two of you behind with Mrs. Prestwick.

Seebo and Charles

Spoiler:

With a bow from the neck towards Orcbane and his troop, Davkul gives his thanks before bouncing out of his chair.

"I beleive we will find that we do not have much time now before we must meet with that merchant. Shall we get moving as quickly as we can? I certainly want to make a good imprssion on a possible employer."

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Seebo & Davkul:

Spoiler:
Current time: Approximately 09:55, 30th Nightal, 1383 DR

How much time you have depends on how close to town the offices are, and how early you want to arrive, if the information you have about the time of the interviews is accurate.

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Bronx does his best to shout directions. Something along the lines of 'He's this way, but to your left.' Between that and the scrunching noise in the snow the gnome/mushroom thing is making ought to be enough to put Nim in the general vicinity if he makes a DC 10 listen check when he next moves...

Bronx:

Spoiler:
Nim has his (cold iron) longsword drawn, and is currently blinded. He is raging.
Bronx has his scythe drawn, and is not blinded. He is standing with his back to the rock of the west side of the snow-covered shelf. The gnome/mushroom thing is immediately south east of Bronx.
Approximately seven and a half feet south of the gnome/mushroom thing is Bronx's discarded shortbow.
Approximately ten feet south of the gnome/mushroom thing is Bronx's increasingly nervous pony.
Approximately ten feet lie in between the gnome/mushroom thing, and Nim, to Bronx's east northeast.
Further north are the dead bear and Nim's discarded glaive.
The eastern edge of the shelf with its downward snow-covered slope runs approximately two and a half to three feet east of Nim and the gnome/mushroom thing.

Nim:

Spoiler:
Nim has his cold iron longsword drawn, and is currently blinded. (Usual attack penalties, including 50% miss chance, to be rolled by DM after Nim attacks anything.) He is also raging. Somewhere south of him are his enemy, Bronx, and Bronx's pony. A successful DC 10 Listen check will help Nim home in on the gnome/mushroom thing, when he moves.

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Next round, again acting in whichever order you prefer.

Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

GM Charles and Davkul

Spoiler:

Taking the gold coins and giving a half bow, Seebo thanks Orcbane and watches as he and his troop leave the room. Turning to Mrs Preswick, seebo offers 1gp "please take this and see that the maid has the rest of the day off and rests well."
Turning to face Davkul with one eyebrow raised , Seebo gives him a quizzical look, "Prosective employer? I thought we were going to check this merchant out, to see what he was up to."

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Seebo & Davkul:

Spoiler:
"Make sure you pull the door too behind you when you leave. They've took his poor body and his papers, but I expect they'll send someone later for the rest of his possessions." Mrs. Prestwick fusses. "And there'll be a maid along presently to clear out that tainted jug of water. Guest poisoned in MY house.... Someone's going to pay for this."
She takes the offered coin and leaves.

Seebo and Charles

Spoiler:

"He was advertising for caravan guards was he not? One moment and we can look at the notice..."
Heading to the message board where the notice was spotted, Davkul points it out..

DM Charles Evans wrote:

Merchant wishing to travel to Citadel Adbar seeks companions of the road:
Juzilan Greyfrost, Merchant of the Amber Traders League of the city of Sundabar, is looking for reliable travelling companions to escort him to Citadel Adbar in time for the Midwinter Fair of 1384 DR. Given the recent reports that goblins driven by desperate hunger may be preying upon travellers upon the Adbar Run, the aforementioned Juzilan is seeking companions who will NOT BE AFRAID of a little peril, and who will be used to rough camping conditions given the limited number of settlements to be found between The Fork and Citadel Adbar.
Travel expenses of such companions will be met, and a modest donation to represent his thanks, upon safe arrival at the gates of Citadel Adbar, will be made.
Candidates for the trip are to meet in the former offices of the Redstar Mining Company, for a discussion at about noon, on the 30th day of the month of Nightal.
THOSE OF NO MORAL STANDING WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Seebo & Davkul:

Spoiler:
At this point, unless Seebo wanted to do something else, I'm going to assume you've both left the bedroom (closing the door behind you) and gone downstairs to the dining room at the least, to find a copy of that message posted somewhere public, so Davkul can point out what he meant, since the late Mr. Pophilov didn't have a copy of that message in his room.
Breakfast is long over by now, by the way, and the tables have all been cleared. Occasional rattles and clatters (and the sounds of staff talking can be heard emerging from the kitchens.

Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

Nim and Charles

Spoiler:
Bronx takes a 5 ft step South and again readied an action to trip the creature, should it make it to its feet. Bronx will continue shouting directions to Nim, "This way!" "Turn Left! No your Left!" "Now swing towards the ground!"

M half orc Paladin 1

charles, bronx

Spoiler:
listen check =16

nim goes towards the undead thingy and swings
1d20+8=10 i guess i miss!!

Rav

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Whilst Nim manages to make it across the snow to close enough to the gnome/mushroom thing to attack it, it hears him coming, and simply flattens itself under his sword swipes in much the same way as it avoided Bronx's previous attack when he swung his scythe at it.
The gnome/mushroom thing glances around, at Nim and Bronx, relentlessly pursuing it, then with a wild shriek of 'Time to go!' vibrating from the purple mushrooms sprouting from the body, it takes a step or two eastwards, then goes tumbling and screeching uncontrollably head over heels down the slope to the east, bouncing off trees and rolling as it goes. (Effectively an unusual method of making a withdrawal.)
Please make a DC 8 Will save on behalf of your pony, Bronx, to avoid it being spooked by the noise and bolting. Treat it as a regular pony with a Will save of +0. After that, I will summarise the conditions for the end of this combat round.

Nim:

Spoiler:
Your eyes are starting to clear, after those horrible spores, and you can make out vague shapes. (Any targets now treated as if affected by a Blur spell for the purposes of trying to hit them for the time being.)

Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

Davkul and GM Charles

Spoiler:

Seebo quietly says to Davkul, "OK, so we are going to make out like we want the job or just going to poke around and see what we can pick up"

M half orc Paladin 1

gm bronx

Spoiler:
can i charge the mushroom undead thingy? if so i will, otherwise i will run after it

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Still waiting for Bronx to make a Will save on the part of his pony to see if it spooks and bolts, Nim, with all the loud noise that gnome/mushroom thing was just making. Will try to post more later today. (Sunday)

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Since Pres man currently seems to be experiencing posting difficulties, I have taken the liberty of making a Will save on behalf of Bronx's pony. Will save to avoid bolting (1d20=12)
Reassured apparently by the proximity of its master's presence, Bronx's pony does not flee in terror at the sudden loud noise from the gnome/mushroom thing.
Reflex save to avoid high speed collision with a tree and going splat (1d20+2=21)
The gnome/mushroom thing fleeing down the slope somehow manages to miraculously steer around several trees as it slides, avoiding an abrupt and descent-halting collision with any of them.
Bronx notices Nim blinking and squinting, as if Nim's sight is starting to come back.

End of round summary:
Nim has his (cold iron) longsword drawn, and currently has blurred vision. He is raging. He is just northeast of Bronx.
Bronx has his scythe drawn. He is standing with his back to the rock of the west side of the snow-covered shelf.
Approximately twelve and a half feet south of Nim is Bronx's discarded shortbow.
Approximately fifteen feet south of Nim is Bronx's nervous pony.
Further north are the dead bear and Nim's discarded glaive.
The eastern edge of the shelf with its downward snow-covered slope lies approximately two and a half feet east of Nim.
Somewhere some 50ft or so to the east, shrieking as it swooshes through the snow between the trees, is the gnome/mushroom thing.
Nim does not have a straight line (owing to trees in the way) between himself and the gnome/mushroom thing for a charge.

Nim & Bronx:
Either of you who makes a DC 4 Intelligence check:
Spoiler:
You remember, despite the heat of battle, that enormous snowdrift which Nim ploughed his way through on the way up here and which that gnome/mushroom thing must surely be about to hit....

Nim & Bronx:
Spoiler:
Nim, part of the slope immediately below the shelf is particularly slippery, and if you want to move greater than half move down it, whilst remaining upright, you will need to make a DC 10 Balance check, or two at DC 15 if you want to attempt a double move.
Next combat round, acting in whichever order you prefer.

Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

Nim and Charles

Spoiler:
Sorry, weekends are always a bit hectic.

"Calm down Nim. The creature jumped off the edge. I don't think we want to follow it down there. We better stay here, pick up our gear, and see if we can do anything about your eyes. We don't want you accidently falling yourself."

Bronx will put his scythe away and pick up his bow.

M half orc Paladin 1

charles,Bronx

Spoiler:
nim heeds bronxs advice and waits

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Nim & Bronx:

Spoiler:
Bronx inspects Nim's face. As far as Bronx can tell, it doesn't look like any permanent damage has been done to Nim's eyes, and with a bit more watering of eyes and blinking to get the last of the spores out, Nim's vision soon recovers to normal.
In the meantime, from down the slope, a sudden high pitched shriek rises, then a distant rustle, followed shortly by a brief plume of smoke rising into the air from somewhere down there.
Nim's rage has ended and I take it that you will retrieve your various discarded/dropped pieces of gear before doing whatever it is that you want to do next. (No longer on initiative or combat rounds.)

Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

Seebo & Davkul:

Spoiler:
At present I am waiting for you to finish your discussion of what to do next. If you think you have the time, or to make mental notes to check about later, besides your priority of the merchant other possible things to look into include:
  • The halfling traveller found late yesterday, who had been dead for some time.
  • The reported travellers who dealt with the fey harrassing Fenwick.
  • The mysterious illuminated page which Davkul received from Fenwick. (Although having been brought by him from Waterdeep, it may not be linked to what is going on around here.)
  • Anything you might have picked up individually but not yet communicated to the other regarding Mr. Pophilov.
  • Cold iron weaponry?
  • Various local stories you might want to ask around about, to discover if anyone knows anything more about certain topics than Donnie was able to recollect.

  • Seebo and Charles

    Spoiler:

"I think it would be best for us to actually see if we can pick up the jobs as caravan guards. If nothing happens to the caravan, at least it is a few easy gold."

    Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

    Nim and Charles

    Spoiler:
"Well the creature seems to be gone. We might as well do what we came here for, let's see if we can find that chain and take a look around."

    Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

    GM Charles and Davkul

    Spoiler:

"It'll take us away from here and any of the current goings on. The other 2 may want to join us, at least I'm pretty sure I can talk Nim into coming. Speaking of the other 2, I wonder how they're getting on."
"I'd like to know if the dead halfling was your associate Fenwick too. If it is Fenwick, who did you meet with last night?"

    Seebo and Charles

    Spoiler:

"I'm pretty cerain the dead halfling was not Fenwick since I am certain that it was Fenwick I met last night. Do you have any ideas on anything else we should do? Do you think we should go and have a look into the dead halfling to see if there is anything we can do?"

    Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

    GM Charles and Davkul

    Spoiler:

" I think we should go and check out the dead halfling. I'm also wondering if we should tell Orcbane, about the goings on with the strange birds."
"Maybe even about the humans that supposedly helped Fenwick."
"Then go to see this merchant, maybe the other two will be back with more information"
"I think we should leave a message for Bronx and Nim to meet us at the Merchants"

    Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

    Seebo & Davkul:

    Spoiler:
So far, Davkul, I've been assuming that Nightsong has been in your room this morning, at the inn; if and when Seebo and yourself set out for the day, I'd like it clarified if you want to take Nightsong with you. Carry on conversing!

    Male (Rock) Gnome Ranger 1

    Nim and Charles

    Spoiler:
I will be out of town until maybe Tuesday night, so just have Bronx follow Nim around. Take care.

    Seebo and Charles

    Spoiler:

"Agreed. Lets go check out that halfling first then while we have time. I'm going to go and get Nightsong first though, I have a feeling we won't be back here for a while."

    Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

    Davkul and GM Charles

    Spoiler:

"While you get Nightsong I'll get my stuff and leave a message for the others. Nim can't read so I'll leave it at the front desk"
    "Ill meet you there"
With that Seebo hurries off towards his room.

    Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

    Seebo & Davkul:

    Spoiler:
You hurry back to your rooms to make your various preparations. Seebo collects various personal belongings, hurries out to the stable, and loads them onto his pony, whilst Davkul collects Nightsong. If you want to tell me that you've cleared your room as well, Davkul, I'll assume that you've done so here, otherwise not. Seebo hurries back to the hall, to locate a member of the staff to try to leave a message for Nim, and to hand over his room key. (Sorry: no refunds for tonight having been paid for, and in any case Nim has yet to return his key.) As Davkul arrives in the hall, Seebo is just obtaining directions to the mine offices for your later planned visit there to speak with the merchant (To the south of town, twenty minutes to half an hour out with this snow on the ground.)

Current Time: Approx. 10:12, 30th Nightal, 1383 DR
Are you both taking your ponies with you when you leave the boarding house or planning to come back for them later?

Seebo: If you could please include in your next post (for me to pass on later, if/when Nim returns) the message you are leaving for Nim?

    Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

    Nim & Bronx:

    Spoiler:
    Time Approximately 10:17, 30th Nightal, 1383 DR
You resume a careful and thorough search of the snow around the dead bear, Nim poking and prodding with his glaive, and Bronx ready with his shortbow in case trouble turns up....
You'd like to take 20 on the search, Nim?

    Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

    Seebo & Davkul:

    Spoiler:
Apologies, Seebo. As you have pointed out, you do not have a pony. After you have concluded packing your possessions then, you will have progressed straight to the hall to leave the message and ask directions to the mine offices. If you could still clarify, Davkul, if you carried out any packing or will be taking your pony with you on this occasion or not?

    Seebo and Charles

    Spoiler:

Yes I am indeed cleaning out my room. At this point I will be filling my saddlebags and offering to let Seebo rife behind me so that we can get around quicker.

    Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

    Davkul and GM Charles

    Spoiler:

Getting back to Davkul, " I have left a message for the other 2 with the staff and gained an assurance that they will get as soon as they come in"
(message as follows: Davkul and I have gone to meet Juzilan Greyfrost, the Merchant , at the former offices of the Redstar Mining Company. please get all your things from our room and meet us there.)

    Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

    Seebo & Davkul:

    Spoiler:
Having finished your business in the hall, you head outside and around to the stables to collect Davkul's pony, with the intention of heading across town to the shrine where the deceased halfling's body was reputedly removed to. As you are heading in and out of the stables (around the north side of the boarding house) you notice a number of men in the uniforms of The Company of the Sable Bow with spears poking and prodding at the edge of the forest behind the boarding house, apparently carrying out some sort of search. From the slightly bored expressions on the searchers' faces and the trampling of the snow, it seems that they've been at their search for some time, without much of interest happening. You don't recognise any of them from the group who came upto Mr. Pophilov's room, but there are at least several dozen men in the company, as far as you've heard, and it may be that there are different groups on different errands around town.
Would you like to proceed across to the shrine to Silvanus, as planned?

    Mad Geologist 5/Dungeonmaster 4/Writer 1

    Nim & Bronx:

    Spoiler:
If this is the case, Nim, what weapon do you want to have in hand, whilst you are on guard? If not the glaive, then you will have to put your glaive down somewhere.

    Male Rock Gnome Cleric 1

    GM Charles and Davkul

    Spoiler:

While still walking to the stables with Davkul, Seebo quietly says "I wonder what they're looking for?"
Then without try to provoke the men Seebo calls,
"Hello good sirs, it's rather a cold day to be out poking in the snow isn't it?"

    Seebo and Charles

    Spoiler:

"Probably best not to disturb them for the moment. It looks like they have a lot of work to do and we dont exactly have a small amount of things to get done this morning ourselves."
