What is an unmodified Strength die?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Following the twists and turns of the What is a die thread, I thought I should also work on clarifying this one too.

So... what is an unmodified Strength die (as featured on some of the weapons I've seen in my limited travels).

Is it:

(a) the die printed on your character card (not including any feats or other printed +x bonuses)

(b) the die printed on your character card plus any feats and other printed +x bonuses

(c) one Strength die of whatever magnitude your Strength ends up being when it comes time to Assemble your dice (but no +x bonuses)

(d) your (temporary) Strength die as in (c) plus any +x bonuses

My intuition is that it's probably (a). Thematically (c) makes a lot of sense too. It might be (b). It's almost certainly not (d), but hey, I've been wrong before.

An exaple:

Lets use the Great Axe:
For your combat check reveal this card to roll your strength or melee die + 1d12; you may additionally discard this card to add your unmodified strength die.

Lini, my favourite example character, has the following on her character card:

Strength: d4 [X]+1 [ ]+2
Bear power: You may discard a card to roll d10 instead of your Strength or Dexterity die for any check.

She uses the Great Axe in combat as well as her Bear Power. What does she roll?

(final strength) + (axe's d12) + ...?
(a) 1d10 + 1 + 1d12 + 1d4
(b) 1d10 + 1 + 1d12 + 1d4 + 1
(c) 1d10 + 1 + 1d12 + 1d10
(d) 1d10 + 1 + 1d12 + 1d10 + 1

Answers on a postcard to the usual address...

Liberty's Edge

It has already been stated that when Lini uses her Bear power, her STR Die changes to 1d10. Any modifier to the Die is just that, a modifier, so it would double up. Therefore you [c] example is correct with a +4 to the difficulty check because she isn't proficient with Weapons.

Seems like C

I think C. I think that word unmodified just means "normal strength, without THIS modifier."

Do we have any other cards that use this language in a different context?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Designer

C is correct.

Great - thanks everyone!

I'm probably beating a dead horse at this point, but I think the wording on Lini's power could be improved.

Original wording:
"You may discard a card to roll d10 instead of your Strength or Dexterity die for any check"

Alternative wording 1:
"You may discard a card to replace your Strength or Dexterity die with a d10 for any check."

Alternative wording 2:
"You may discard a card to change your Strength or Dexterity die to a d10 for any check."

I think the phrase "instead of" is what is misleading. The example in the original post illustrates why the d10 *becomes* Lini's Strength die or Dexterity die for the duration of a check when she uses her power.

"Instead of you Strength die" makes it sound like you're not actually rolling your Strength die but just a generic d10 with no skill associated with it.
