Pricing out a Klar

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

I've built up some GM credit in PFS and I'm making a Shoanti Ranger/Barbarian who will be doing Thunder and Fang. Everything was going nicely until I tried pricing out his Klar.

According to Ultimate Equipment, which I believe has the most recent printing, a traditional Klar is 12gp and weighs 6lbs. Whether it's made of wood or metal, it weighs and costs the same. The description says it counts as a light spiked shield. Normally when you price out a light spiked shield, the base weight (5lbs wood, 6lbs metal) and cost (3gp wood, 9gp metal) of the shield are added to the base weight (5lbs) and cost (10gp) of the shield spikes, but the Klar is one entity, and it weighs and costs less than any combination above.

My dilemma is making a Klar out of magically strengthened bone with a cold iron blade. I want it purely for flavor, and I don't mind paying a bit for it, but I want to get it right.

Bone items cost half as much as normal items made of wood. Magically strengthened bone costs +100gp/lb. Cold iron is double the cost of steel. Masterwork shields cost +150gp, and masterwork weapons cost +300gp.

If the Klar description said it was a 5lb shield with a 1lb blade attached, I think this would be easier, but since nothing is written we have to guess how it should be priced. Here's my idea. Please check my math or offer some suggestions. Feel free to click the FAQ if you want, too.

I'm going to guess that the blade is similar to a dagger, weighing approximately 1lb and costing 2gp. A cold iron version would cost 4gp, and a masterwork cold iron version would cost 304gp.
I'm going to guess that the shield portion would thusly weigh 5lbs and be valued at 10gp (12gp total minus the 2gp blade portion). If I want to make it out of bone, it costs half as much, so 5gp. Magically strengthened bone adds +500gp, and a masterwork version would cost +150gp, totaling 655gp.

The total cost would then be 959gp.

Does that seem right?

I found two threads discussing similar pricing issues, one a year ago and another a year before that, but neither really came to a consensus:
Special Material Klar
Klar

So, here's this year's turn at it. Anyone have any good suggestions?

The magically strengthened bone part, you could just say it's there.

It will have no mechanical benefit/detriment anyways.

Sczarni

Magically strengthened bone does not have the reduced AC that regular magical bone does, if I'm interpreting the entry in UE correctly.

This sounds like something that you should put up to Ask A Shoanti. :)

"Ask a Shoanti"?

Since you are doing this for PFS don't make gear with multiple special materials.

I wish I could have a spear where I only need to pay for a metal mithril tip but I really can't. My advice would be to choose 1 special material pay the cost and fluff the rest.

That is one of the possibilities I was worried of. My desire was to post an in depth question here and get a general consensus to refer back to. Given the number of problems people have with Klars, I was even hoping enough ppl might FAQ it.

Since I needed to play the character I already bought a Klar as I priced it out above. Worst case scenario, if a GM says "no", I'll just use it as a cold iron Klar for that game, since it would have been less expensive anyways.

Also, given the recent FAQ on Bastard Swords, it's really tough to determine what is "crunch" and what is "fluff" in the Klar's description. It says it's a bone shield with a metal blade attached. We just need to find out how much of each material is used.

It's an ask me column in Wayfinder magazine. Far more useful than "Dear Abbey".
