About Velar Khion'TalAn pale elf stands before you, eyeing you warily as if judging your worth. He wears bulky winter clothing which together with his great height makes for an interposing statue. Underneath the cloak and furs there is an occasional glimpse of silvered armour, polished almost to a mirrors sheen. With a gruff grunt the elf makes his decision and steps forth with his arm extended in a greeting. A faint aroma of pine and burnt air drifts your way as he approaches. Description:

Backstory:
Valerei Khion was a Twilight Speaker, one of the snowcaster missionaries of Findeladlara. Among the few snowcasters to ever venture far from their insular community she was also one of the few to find her love far from home. As a young (and in her chuckling recollection; foolish) woman her first journey south took her over the Lake of Mists and Veils and into the human lands that would later become Brevoy. Though that would not be long – no sooner had she crossed Lake Reykal over from Issia to Rostland before she heard rumours of war. The whispers soon rose into a deafening roar as Choral and his armies swept through the fertile plains. Caught in the crossfire, Valerei found that none of the wisdom that had been imparted in her back home before her journey seemed to apply to this situation, she was at a loss of how to extract herself of the situation.
Luckily – perhaps it was fate or divine guidance – she found one of her kind in the roiling masses of humanity. He was a writer, named Erion Tal, currently immortalising the deeds of the Swordlords. Together they made for the free city of Restov where they waited out the ravages of war. Though forbidden by her oath as a Twilight Speaker Valerei fell in love and he replied in kind. After the war, they briefly moved to New Stetven. Realizing how much she disliked the bustling city life Valerei suggested that they should move somewhere homelier, like the Icerime Peaks. Erion protested, quite sensibly, that there would be little need for a scholar such a desolate place. But Chorals interest in rebuilding Skywatch offered them a good compromise. A cabin within a day’s travel from Skywatch would offer Valerei the tranquillity she desired while the observatory and other remnants provided Erion with plenty of material for his writings. The future was bright for the young couple and a mere handful of decades later they had their only son – Velar Khion’Tal. Growing up Velar never met his mother’s people. She taught him their histories and culture, but he could not come to terms the weight they placed on tradition. Exile seemed like a heavy toll for love, so relations with that branch of the family tree stayed frosty. Relations on his father’s side was on the other hand good. Every few years or so Erion and Velar would journey to Kyonin and stay for a season or two. A scholar couldn’t willingly let his child go uneducated after all and Erion arranged for reputable, if slightly liberal, tutors to care for Velar during their stay in the elven homelands. Those times were Velar’s most cherished. They and the warm homestead were the constant anchor points of his youth; unchanging and steady. The fleeting reality of home outside the family was quite the opposite. After each trip, he couldn’t help but see how much his human friends changed. Unlike the ever laughing and curious elves of Kyonin their interest, their spark, seemed to fade away so quickly. But luckily, there always seemed to be new people ready to take their place. Eventually the generations started to simply blur together and Velar found that he spent less and less energy on even trying to know them. As Velar matured into a young man he visited Kyonin more frequently, now also without his father. There he could learn and hone both the arts of magic and the blade, as well as hold a proper philosophical discussion without suddenly finding his conversation partner losing track. Though strangely, he could not find solace at the later. For at the back of his head he knew that every pleasant month spent debating the intricacies of Yuelral’s teachings his few remaining human friends burned away yet another significant chunk of their existence while he accomplished very little. In Kyonin he found himself growing restless while at home he was struck down by lethargy instead. All in all, he could not make sense of how he was supposed to live his life. A solution – or distraction rather – to his minor existential crisis came unexpectedly in 4699 AR when the whole ruling house of Brevoy disappeared overnight. In a strange coincidence, the Skywatch also cut all contact with the world. This, in the eyes of his father, was a true calamity as that cut the scholar off from a great many unexplored subjects. Recalling Choral’s fascination with the ancient observatory two centuries earlier Erion could not help but make a connection. And as the walls of Skywatch proved impenetrable to even the most persistent probing he decided to search for further clues among the people of Brevoy. Velar, seeing an opportunity to make a difference, set out with him. They searched everywhere from the plains of Roostland to the coast of the Lake, never finding anything more substantial then rumours and vague prophecies. After two years on the road Erion, feeling the effect of his years, decided to return home while Velar continued the search. The following years where no more successful than the first pair. But strangely Velar came to realize that for the first time in decades he was happy – even though the mystery was no closer to being solved. Instead he found satisfaction in the simple act of trying, of the interactions with the humans of Brevoy. As a helpful traveller he could stick around just long enough to enjoy the wild intensity of their friendship but leave before the horrible downspiral of decay became too apparent. Within a few more years he had even managed to make a handful of friends all across the land, found an apprentice in the witching woods of Gronzi, and a band of comrades to be a part of. His father’s quest was soon at the very back of his mind and instead his time was spent ferreting out all manner of foul creatures lurking in the corners of Brevoy, humanoid and not. When word of the king’s decree reached him, the course of action was clear. For what was an oath made for a fleeting king in the face of such an grand adventure? Stat block:
