I was just listening to A Storm of Swords on CD in my car, ( the unabridged version)
I just got through the part where the slave dealer has finished explaining some of the rights of passage the unsullied go through.
I thought having the unsullied go out into the slave market with a silver piece , and then taking a slave infant from its mother and klinning it right there, ( and then giving the silver piece to the mother so he is paying her slave master for his loss of property)
And the other right what was it? Oh yes puppies
The unsullied are also given a puppy right after they are cut and begin training. In order to gain their bronze cap they have to strangle their puppy.
A friend mentioned to me the Speznaz (Russian special forces) have to strangle puppys that they have raised during their training.
Well I thought that maby those tests might be worth copying for the Hell knights.
So in order for an squire who is aspiring to get his “spurs” and to get their armor and join the hell knights they must demonstrate their obedience, to follow orders without hesitation, and to show they will execute their duties without remorse or sentiment. They must go into the slave market and kill a slave infant in front of its mother, and of course pay a silver for the destruction of propterty to show they will execute their orders without hesitation, and the puppy strangling would be to kill whatever sentiment and emotion they have left…..sentiment gets in the way of applying the law and following orders
What do you think?

Wonerful book. :)
A friend mentioned to me the Speznaz (Russian special forces) have to strangle puppys that they have raised during their training.
For reference, this is an urban myth. No serious governmental organization has done this kind of thing in a very long time...though warlords often have their people do such things.

Not for the Hellknights. The thing you have to remember about being a Helknight is that a Paladin has to be able to do it. They have Paladins and other Lawful Good members. Quite a few of them actually. Therefore, any tests that you need to basically behave monstrously to succeed at are forbidden.
Some legitimately evil order or religion could definitely do something similar, though.

Well... the Asmodean Paladins have be retconn'ed out
That said, Hellknights range from Lawful Evil (my read is a majority), Lawful Neutral (a sizable minority) and a handful of Lawful Good.
See the Council of Thieves player book write up for Paladins.
I could see someone RAISED to be an AntiPaladin killing puppies etc but the Hellknights are a serious military order (the LAWFUL part being strongest) and not necessarily out just to make trouble for anyone - if anything, these guys are Judge Dredds. Some (a few) are all dewy and nice but hard on keeping the law (regret anything that causes pain/loss/etc but they WILL enforce it, while seeking leniency through the laws).
A lot are just about the Law - keeping order and so on. Good or Evil? Meh - its the LAW that counts.
The majority? Well, its easy for a nation that worships Asmodeus, incorporates dealing with Devils as part of its power structure and is generally a bit bastardic as a culture? Slavery etc? Its to have evil in its ranks.
They wont strangle puppies (unless its a demon in puppy form) but think of your worst case most zealous guy from CIA/NSA/Homeland Security? Thats the Hellknights.

Wasn't talking about them, just pointing out there were indeed LG members, and thus anything flat-out forbidding Good people from being full members wouldn't work.

I disagree slightly. I'd say that LE and LN members are probably equally common. I agree LG is a definite minority, though, I was just pointing out it was one that was present.

Again, I tend to agree.

That will vary some from order to order. I have a very difficult time seeing a paladin being a member of the order of the gate and keeping their powers while dealing with devils. Some may require more obviously evil rites than others as part of what their order does. If you can get your hands on some of the council of thieves books they have a lot of information on the hellknights, their history, and the orders which could help you decide how to work the initiation. At the very end is always the battle against a stronger devil though.

actually according to the world guide the vast majority are LN with the guys in charge being LE, but I think it mainly varies by order. Godclaw prob has the most LG members. Nail, scourge, and maybe pyre more LN and the others more LE in flavor, but I think its a case of idealism slowly turning into cynicism. You may start LG, but by the time you make 8th level you're at least LN and all the high end leaders LE.
