I remember back in the days of 3.x sometimes when a new splat book came out, and there was [always] a section of new spells, occasionally you'd see the lowly npc class, the adept, get a few scraps of the new spells that were already going to the big boys.
Not so in PF, and I'm starting to wonder if it was intentional or if the devs just didn't think to (or didn't care enough to). There are, however, a few spells that are either lesser or greater variants of core rulebook spells that the adept gets, and I was wondering what people's opinions were on giving them to the adept:
Level 2 spells:
- Animate dead, lesser (UM 205)
- Protection from chaos, communal (UC 240)
- Protection from evil, communal (UC 240)
- Protection from good, communal (UC 240)
- Protection from law, communal (UC 240)
Level 3 spells:
- Delay poison, communal (UC 227)
- Endure elements, communal (UC 228)
- Resist energy, communal (UC 242)
Level 4 or 5 spell: (This one could go either way)
- Tongues, communal (UC 247)
Level 5 spells:
- Contagion, greater (UM 201)
- Stoneskin, communal (UC 245)

Good Stuff
I can see why expanding the Adept spell list may have been low on The Dev's priority list; in most games it just won't matter. However, some campaigns, most notably Eberron, put the adept front and center in dealings with the PCs.
I think it is good not to add any really cool spells to the list, but your example is perfect. There is no reason the adept wouldn't have these spells (and good reason that they should).
Bravo.

I'd say that if a class can cast a spell, they should be able to cast communal version of it but I am all in favor reducing spell list sizes by making variants of the same single scalable spell instead of multiple spells (e.g. summon monster, cure wounds, anything with greater/lesser in it's name, etc.).

It would indeed be nice if adepts got some love. Not everyone wants to use PC classed NPCs for everything just because they have access to a relatively mundane but essential spell.
I suppose you could always assume that the adept researched the spell via spell-research, but that gets old faster. Mayhaps we should devise an unofficial expanded spell-list for adepts? I could get behind that.

The guidelines for adding new spells to other spellcasters' lists that were hoped to be in Ultimate Magic (but which did not make the cut) would be a good place to explore this sort of thing. Perhaps Paizo will find a new home for such content.. or it would make a decent series of "Design Tuesday" blog posts.

I totally agree. I think the NPC classes in general need to be looked at, dusted off, and updated in light of the materiel released post Core Rulebook...

Yeah. When it comes to adding feats and stuff, usually not too much of an issue. Any warrior/expert/aristocrat/commoner/monster can pick up new feats. Spell lists are a bit trickier though, and given the fact adepts are intended to fill the same sorts of roles that warriors and experts are, their spell list could definitely use some dusting. They are in essence sucky spellcasters, but they get a combination of arcane and divine spells (which include cleric, druid, and wizard spells) at a delayed progression, which makes them excellent for just throwing in as "generic spellcaster #3". :P
Their list could indeed use some expanding. :)
I might write up an expanded list for them and post it. Purely unofficial, of course, but something that people might want to use.

Hehe, delayed indeed. I remember back in 3.5 the archivist loved these bastards cause it meant learning polymorph as a 4th level spell instead of a 5th level spell.

Yeah I remember that. It's one of the reasons I don't put high level spells down on low slots even when creating new classes where it might be balanced. 1) It opens up opportunities for stuff like Archivist; 2) it can end up reducing the cost of magic items based on effects. For example, as of the summoner being released, the haste spell has lost value in terms of item creation, because summoners get it as a 2nd level spell at CL 4. The standard rule for magic items is that when pricing you assume the lowest possible caster level and the spell's level. So haste went from being worth 5 * 3 * X to 4 * 2 * X.
The Summoner has made the cost for boots of speed incorrect, and now overpriced. As of the summoner's release, the boots of speed are now only worth 8,000 gp, down from 12,000 gp.
