Need help with a Large sized PC

3.5/d20/OGL

I have a PC who is a Minotaur out of the Savage Species book.

Once he hits level 6 he will be Large in size.
And once he's a full-fledged minotaur he will take levels of paladin.

So I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of any good articles in Dragon or any D&D books that has info on equipment for large creatures....and more importantly mounts for large creatures.

Thanks.

I won't lie, I haven't the foggiest idea about mounts, although now that I think about Defenders of the Faith: A Guidebook to Clerics and Paladins had a blip about it; couldn't be sure though.

Anyways, Savage Species has a great table for converting weapons on page 43.

Any mount that is at least 1 size catagory larger should do, so although this means the minotaur might not be riding any horses, other monsterous creatures might still be viable. As for equipment, with weapons the damage dice simply increases, and in the case of armour it's weight increases.

Check the SRD entry for Minotaurs as characters for all the adjustments needed for Large size.

I think equipment weight doubles or something. For weapons, the damage dice advance by one step. All in all nothing you should sweat too much.

I'd say some big large critters could work as mounts, too. I'd suggest a dire bear. Dire wolf would probably be too small, same for dire boar.

You can also go with huge critters, like elephants and some dinosaurs.

Arms and Equipment Guide has some info on mounts, up to and including purple worms, tendriculos, and gelatinous cubes.

Or you could make a centaur PC, then you can be your OWN large mount! :)

What sort of equipment, specifically?

I believe the Draconomicon has rules for paladins of certain level getting a dragon as a mount. Since dragons vary in size, there shouldn't be much trouble finding one to fit your minotaur.

More simply, just get a regular pegasus or griffin and hire a mage to do Enlarge + Permanency.

If you are looking for a huge animal, you could go dire elk. As for the Draconomicon, you'd need to find an adult dragon (or young adult for Gold/Red) to heft you about, and you can never get a dragon special mount large enough to carry you.

The Mastadon in MM3 might work. Or the Battletitan dinosaur. Nasty!

Alternatively, you might want to suggest an alternate version of the paladin that gets something else instead of a mount. I think the Dungeonscape book had an alternate class feature that gave you a spirit companion that gave healing and combat bonuses. Pathfinder paladins can have a weapon spirit that makes your weapon (more) magical. They might be better fits unless the player is really psyched about playing a Large mounted Minotaur.

You as GM have a bit of leeway here. The SRD establishes that the parameters of the mount summoned are customized to the size and theme of the paladin himself (or herself). So it would be both thematic and balanced to grant a Large sized paladin a Huge sized mount (of type Animal) without necessitating that they take a special feat to do so.

I would discuss with the player what kind of mount he would desire. You could simply write up a Huge Heavy Warhorse, advancing the stats as outlined in the MM rules for advancing a creature in size. Likewise, you could manipulate the stats for another kind of animal (a ram, or a bear, etc.) in the same way.

I (as GM) would require the use of a feat if the player wished to summon a mount that was not of base type Animal, such as a dragon or dire animal, or had a template, such as Celestial Creature. For example, Dragon Steed is a feat described in the Draconomicon, and the Book of Exalted Deeds described a Celestial Mount feat that adds the Celestial template to the mount (giving the mount the ability to Smite Evil!).

I think you can't go wrong as long as it is a Animal type just made huge. Anything else would probably require a feat to cover it. Power was a huge animal shouldn't be a problem since the player won't get it until 12th or 13th level. Personally unless your player really wants a mount you may want to look at the alternate powers from PHII or Complete Divine that replace the mount with something else.
