Another great french author : J.H.Rosny (same name for two brothers). Surely you know him for his great Quest for Fire, a prehistoric tale and a great movie too. ^^
He has written a lot of SF books. You should give them a try... if you can't find them in english. =/

another classic of his was 'the quest of the dawn man'(original title 'the giant cat')...'ironcastle' was also really cool
