Printing PDF's from Paizo

Customer Service

Sorry if I've got the wrong forum for this, feel free to move if necessary.

I've bought several PDFs from the Paizo store and I have a weird problem that only seems to occur on Paizo PDFs. When I go to print them, it'll start the print job and then at some point it usually comes up with an error stating: "Unable to start print job. Is the printer available?"

It doesn't happen immediately, but I was just printing the Skinsaw PDF and had it happen four times. Now normally I'd think this was a problem with my computer setup, but it only happens on Paizo PDFs. I can immediately go into any PDF purchased from another store and print them no problem. I've printed the Earthdawn books (400+ pages) and never had a problem with those. I have over 80 PDFs and the only ones that ever cause me problems are the Paizo ones.

It's not a huge deal, I won't stop buying from Paizo, organize a boycott or throw myself off a tall building, but I have to wonder, is there something in the watermarking code that may be causing this problem? Anyone else get a similar error? Anyone have any suggestions?

Tech notes:

I'm running Win XP SP2 (fully patched), 2 GB RAM, most recent version of Acrobat reader, printing to a Samsung CLP-510 color laser printer.

I'm having the same problem with the same pdf, specifically the Journal part of the PDF, everything else prints out fine.

Anyone got any ideas ?

That's a new on me.

Have you tried updating your printer drivers?

Can you provide the *exact* error message, including the title of the error window (if it has one)?

Just tried it again and this is the exact wording

Title: Adobe Reader
Message: Unable to start print job. Is the printer available?
Options: OK

This one occured on the 22nd page for printing (same as it did last night). I'm printing across my home network (through a 2k3 server). I've tried printing from the server (connected directly to the printer) and that seems to work, but from a workstation it doesn't.

Strange....

I'm going to try a few more things here...

Oddly, Googling that error message brings up only one result: your post here.

I'd go with updating your printer driver as a primary troubleshooting step.

How about if you try printing *just* page 22?

Yeah, I tried googling it before I posted last night and got nothing.

I've already updated drivers and that doesn't seem to be the issue. Once the print fails, I have to close Adobe, open up the PDF again and then print from wherever it failed. It'll run anywhere from 10 - 20 pages and then give me the same error. Rinse and repeat :)

Normally I'd assume a problem with my system, but I can print much bigger documents without issue and it only happens with all my watermarked PDFs from Paizo (web enhancements work though). It's a bizarre problem. I've got a few settings I'm going to try adjusting on my server, but if that doesn't work, I'll probably format my system over the weekend (I'm getting close to clean install time anyway) and see what happens.

Thought I would bump this, because I've found a solution.

For anyone having problems printing secured PDFs the problem seems to lie with Acrobat Reader 8.x. I uninstalled Reader 8, installed Reader 7.something and my printing problems have all been solved.

Huzzah!

(and Boo-urns to Adobe).

One good reason to use Foxit software. I'm using a new computer & it came with Adobe 8 on it, & while I liked it, scrolling through pdfs felt like a chore, so I decided to download & install Foxit Reader & glad I did (felt like a finding a old friend again). No more Adobe Reader for me!!!
