Round 6

The ice bolt explodes behind Talus showering him with shards of ice, slicing into his arms and legs.

Clutching his arm, Talus crouches a bit and runs towards the corner, trying to get out of the Druid's line of sight, stopping just before the area of darkness.

Once he's moved enough, he concentrates inwardly ,calling upon his mystical ability to heal his wounds.

Running into the darkness, he seeks out the Druid, running up the stairs and through the doorway...

If he finds him, he attacks! Imbuing his spear with psionic power, he attempt to skewer the evil Druid...

A visibly frustrated Valen seethes as the vines continue to hold him tight despite his best efforts to escape their grasp; while the druids take turns taking pot shots at him.

Not sure why, with my record with the RNG, I thought Valen would be in good hands with me rolling for him <shaking head as taps play softly in the background>

Round 8 Malthorn

Thanks Niles the spell states that you use the spellcasting ability for both attack and damage, so +6 to the damage :) Based on the earlier twigs that should end it.

Feeling the crunch of something on the other end of his staff, a satisfied grin come across Malthorn's face for any that can see. Stepping to the right searching for an opening in the darkness he finds the upper balcony running towards the middle stairway.

Taking aim at the druid in the lower corner, he sends a blast trying to draw some of the heat from Valen down below.

I just realized there was a wall in the way so the Other Evil Druid couldn't have targeted Valen. However, because we've been operating under the assumption there was no wall there, we will continue to operate under that assumption.

Str(DC13): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1 in 4 rounds I have rolled a collective 16 points (1,8,6,1) just barely enough to break him out should they be added together

Between the hits he's taken, and the entangling vines, and the frustration of both together the paladin seems to be fighting a fight that he can no longer win. "Silvanus, why hast thou forsaken me in this land of foul creatures, ruled by the devil himself?"

Round 9 - Jarreck

Ducking as the ice shard breaks against the wall behind him, the bits lacerating him anywhere his bare skin shows forth, Malthorn concentrates on the druid below. Yet a disturbance above does catch his eye. "Beware something comes!" He calls out to the others, unaware as yet the thud in the darkness was Gail.

That'll do it.

Valen stabs the Evil Druid in the heart, slaying her. Malthorn, his fiery anger ignited, points at the Other Evil Druid and his spell scorches big holes in the man. The Raven Swarm continues to peck and caw and peck some more at the Vine Blight. Eventually the thing collapses to the ground.

Combat Over.

That fight was much harder than it was supposed to be, mostly because of some errors I made. 1) The Raven Swarm was supposed to be active beginning in the 5th Round and deal 1d8 damage to a single blight each round. 2) The wall I oversighted would have meant that the Other Evil Druid could never have cast spells on Talus or Valen and so Talus would have had more HP when he engaged in melee. Apologies for that. To make up for it, everyone can have inspiration and Talus/Gail can be at one hp and conscious

On the next LONG REST:
Anyone who studies, uses the strange looking staff finds it has several magical properties. It is a Gulthias Staff. Made from the branch of a Gulthias tree, a Gulthias staff is a spongy, black length of wood. Its evil magic makes beasts visibly uncomfortable while within 30 feet of it. The staff has 10 charges and regains ld6+4 of its expended charges daily at dusk. If the staff is broken or burned to ashes, its wood releases a terrible, inhuman scream that can be heard out to a range of 300 feet. All blights that can hear the scream immediately wither and die.
Vampiric Strike. The staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff. On a hit, it deals damage as a normal quarterstaff, and you can expend 1 charge to regain a number of hit points equal to the damage dealt by the weapon. Each time a charge is spent, red blood oozes from the staff's pores.
Ray of Enfeeblement: You can point the staff at a target and cast Ray of Enfeeblement on that Target as per the spell The DC to resist is 13 and this takes 3 charges from the staff.

Blight Bane. While you are attuned to the staff, blights and other evil plant creatures don't regard you as hostile unless you harm them.

A bit more noisily Gail follows him out of the door and stops to listen. Not hearing anything she suggests, "Lets try this first door here."

I find the short rest healing rules confusing:
The rules state "A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total. The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll." It talks about spending Hit Die, but there doesn't seem to be and advantage to not using all of them. What am I missing? Healing: 4d8 + 12 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 1) + 12 = 22

The number you recover during a long rest, I think 1/2, without consulting the rules. So would take 2 days to recover from spending all of your HD this rest period.

Speaking of which I failed to list Malthorn and Valen's resting HD

Malthorn 1HD: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5hp 25/27 total Malthorn will also call upon Fiendish Vigor to return the shielding protecting him. Fiendish Vigor: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 bonus hp

Valen 2HD: 2d10 + 4 ⇒ (8, 1) + 4 = 13hp 27/36hp

Malthorn's HP?:

Starting Hp 27hp base + 8hp fiendish vigor = 35 total

Round 1 -9hp from evil Druid = 26 hp,
Round 4 cast fiendish vigor +5 temp hp
Round 6 -9hp from vine blight
round 9 -2hp from evil druid
Post CombatFiendish vigor +6
Post short restExpend 1 HD +5 and re-establish fiendish vigor +6 for total of 25/27hp and 6 bonus
Will try to do better with keeping up with them.

Seven's earlier question:

PHB wrote:

At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost
hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up
to a number of dice equal to half of the character’s total
number of them (minimum of one die).
For example, if a
character has eight Hit Dice, he or she can regain four
spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest.
A character can’t benefit from more than one long rest
in a 24-hour period

Re:Short Rest Also, the DM guide assumes 2 short rests per "adventuring day" so if you use all of them in one SR, you don't have any for later.

Malthorn and Talus head out of the Printing Press and don't spot anything untoward in the hallway in either direction.

Gail checks the two rooms 19

Two pairs of bunk beds occupy this room. Against the west wall rest four identical footlockers.

and the final room on the hallway 18

This room contains a rectangular table surrounded by eight chairs, an L-shaped cupboard, and a floor-to-ceiling closet pantry. Next to the pantry is a small iron stove.

Let me know where you go, the map is labeled with Numbers. There's also a cellar which isn't on the map but will be once you investigate. You can access all the floors from the curved staircase

OK seems it's best if she only uses 2 HD. I suppose that means she healed 6 + 3 + 1 = 10 HP using the dice from the rolls above.

Gail checks the cupboard and the pantry, if there's nothing of interest in there, she'll try the door that leads to the bedroom. Softly she tells tells the others, "This all seems to be pretty normal, I wonder where those druids where holed up."
Will try room W17.

The cupboard and pantry are filled with foodstuffs and crockery/cookware.

Gail and the heroes enter the next room W17

This room contains a four-poster bed, its headboard carved in the likeness of a giant raven. A soft black rug covers the floor between the bed and the door. In the corners of the south wall stand two slender wardrobes with a tapestry of a church hanging on the wall between them. Beneath the tapestry sits a handsomely carved rocking cradle. To the north, under a window, is a plain desk and chair. Other furnishings include a wooden chest and a freestanding mirror in a wooden frame.

I wonder if the designers assume we're going to burglarize the place? I suspect we're missing lots of loot.

Gail spends a moment looking at the church, wondering if it represented an actual church with a particular a religion.

@Gail They did, and you are. But I'll make it up to you.

Gail sees the same strange Lathander-like iconography she has come to know as the Morninglord. However, this tapestry has ravens sewn into several key areas, as if trying to make a connection between the Morninglord and ravenkind.

Malthorn leads the Heroes down the stone staircase into what looks like a barrel storage area

Rows of new barrels fill this room. A narrow stone staircase spirals upward in the southwest corner.

To get down to the Basement level...there are two options. The Stairs in the southwest corner or the stairs in area w10

Malthorn and Valen move to investigate the main floor of the winery, searching from the northern wall rooms across to the southern wall. assumption is the map is oriented with north being at the top. not sure I've seen a cardinal rose on it. If the floor is clear thy will move down the steps.

search order: current, W3, W5, W8(where we came in), W11, W12 and W2, before getting to last room in W10. Intend to close doors behind us so that someone moving in a hurry might forget to close and would see the passageway had been used. Niles this would be a methodical search so do you want a bunch of perception checks?.
I'm with Gail in not looting the winery of the people we are trying to help, the druids, that's another matter :) granted they haven't had much outside the staff. Thanks for the future loot promise.
