What should I expect to happen to my summoner after Impossible Magic releases?

Can I continue to play him as is? Will I be forced to abandon or rebuild him?

Will I be given a free rebuild credit to update to the new version of the class?

Lorespire Remaster rules

There may also be more specific rules etc allowing Legacy options but I wouldn't expect them until Impossible Magic is added to Character Options.

This question came up recently in an Org Play Discord I'm in, and I gave the following answer there (after providing the same Lorespire link Pirate Rob posted above):

Quote:

Assuming later books work the same way as Player Core and Player Core 2, you can continue using the old chassis if the character already has at least 1 XP, but specific character options (like feats and spells) reprinted with the same name have to use the new rules text immediately. (New characters created after a class is Remastered must use the new chassis.)

There are no longer any free rebuilds beyond 1st level (as there were the first year of Remaster), so you will need to pay for a rebuild boon if you want to fully convert an existing PC of level 2+ to the Remastered version.

That is my understanding of how the rules work (and I ran my answer past my wife, who is a VC). When the book is released, check the Character Options page for it to see if there are any specific rulings beyond those general rules at Loremaster.

For the record, I'm very eager (if not impatient!) to see what the Remastered summoner looks like. I currently have two in play in PFS, one at 5th and one below that, but I'll pay for the rebuilds if I like the Remastered version enough (starting with the cheaper one, because I've been playing that one more recently).

I understand your concerns given the different ways the Remastering classes has been handled. To summarize

1) With the release of Player Core 1, all existing characters were granted a free rebuild that did not force the usual gold penalty. Those who did not wish to rebuild could continue to run characters using old wizard schools (which was all the Player Core 1 remaster invalidated) or if they wanted to grandfather in some Organized Play Perks (Pathfinder Training and School Benefits). I consider this the most successful implementation.

2) With the release of Player Core 2, players were not given free rebuilds. This was never promised, and would have been fine, except this time sweeping structural changes were made to classes, and a decision that changes to class features that kept their old name would be treated as errata meant that existing oracles and alchemists were borderline unplayable, something nobody expected. Oracles and Alchemists who predated the remaster still had a month to rebuild their characters, but those who had created alchemists and oracles in the meantime, who had no idea their characters were ticking time bombs were told to pony up the ACP or play broken characters. This is the worst case scenario, but previews of Impossible Magic suggest it's not one we're headed towards.

3) With remasters of legacy titles, Remastering your character has been mandatory, as all changes are considered errata since these are essentially reprints. This has gone over fine up until now, as the only complaint about these remasters I've heard has been a lack of desired changes. Impossible magic, however, is a brand new title...

A non-core new title containing remasters is not unprecedented. Hellknight and Runelord have both been remastered, and largely followed the Player Core 1 model (even allowing Legacy Runelords to keep their old version of Runelord Dedication! Wizard privilege, I guess). Maguses and Summoners also aren't the only characters who may experience changes when the book releases- Playtest Necromancers and Runesmiths became legal for long term play when the Risks and Rewards Playtest began. Lorespire says they must rebuild to use the Impossible Magic rules.

So, in conclusion... Tim and Rob's guidance is the most likely procedure. That being said, things have not been perfectly consistent, so I very much understand everyone's anxieties.

It would be nice if free rebuilds were implemented (if for no other reason than long running maguses and summoners were unable to use their remaster rebuild because it expired before their class was remastered), and given the overall positive reception of the magus changes a mandatory update would probably go over with a fair bit of celebration and a minimum of grumbling. But there's no indication that's coming beyond the aforementioned inconsistencies.

The good news is I do not foresee a repeat of the Alchemist/Oracle debacle. The magus changes are far less drastic (Although I am concerned that Studious spells changing might be... an issue). While we have less information about Summoner, I strongly suspect that if an Alchemist/Oracle scale rework had happened it would have gotten its own preview.
