This is sort of a general question, but when writing a novel to be sold that does NOT take place in golarion, how can you easily tell what needs to be omitted or changed that is not a proper noun?
For example, if a story published on royal road had a conspirator dragon as its antagonist in a not-golarion world, would that be something that requires a change or would it be similar to using a blue dragon from DnD? How would one handle wishing to use a 'Cinder Archdragon' instead of an 'Ancient Red Dragon'? If one wanted to write a horror story about a Brainchild, how much of it would be able to be used? If a story included kobolds, but they had the same visual description, biology, and magic benefactor lore of pathfinder kobolds would it be something that would need to be changed?
I ask questions like these because I see many authors utilizing terms and creatures from other copyrighted media that are not proper nouns, and I'm unsure how to tell what particulars are specifically allowed.
