My homegame has been playing in the eastern Flanaess, Old Aerdy, for a while and I've been researching and tinkering with ye olde Great Kingdom and Aerdy history (for play) for quite a while.
And I've encountered a snag.
Greyhawk Grognards like me will know both the importance of The Battle of Fortnight's Length and that no one knows where it took place.
Well dagnabbit! I want to know!
(Normally I just spend some time reading from the Gold Box, and Carl Sargent stuff, and the LGG, and old modules, etc., then make a decision all by myself. But this time I figured I'd talk to some other Greyhawk Grognards and get some opinions.
Where would *You* place the site of The Battle of Fortnight's Length (you know, if you were going to design an adventure where PC archaeologists search for the historical location) ?
Battle of Fortnight's Length
Aerdy defeats united Flannae clans and begins expanding west:
1} Owlsthorpe:
Strategic-- slightly west of the Flinty Hills opening into Nyrond/The West, and at a confluence of three rivers (still a crossroads)
Canon-- importantly mentioned in 'Saga of Old City' confirming it came from Gygax
Freedom-- effectively nothing outside earliest Gord novels means DM has effectively free creative reign
2} Harskern:
Strategic-- perfectly west of the Harp River and coming into the Almor/Nyrond western-subcontinent
Canon-- not Gygax, only Carl Sargent, but included in Mona & Holian's LGG
Freedom-- tons of Duke Szeffrin stuff nearby with Ivid the Undying material but nothing specifically on Harskern
3} Womtham:
Strategic-- on the Duntide where the Gamboge, the Flinty Hills, and Nyrond meet is probably the best spot on the map
Canon-- 'Saga of Old City,' Gold Box, Carl Sargent, even a map from Dungeon Magazine
Freedom-- as long as the archaeological site is a mile or two away there is room for creative freedom without stepping on Canon's toes
4} Rel Mord:
Strategic-- Gateway to the West, the inarguable point on the line between Aerdy and western Flanaess
Canon-- by mountains of published work the biggest possible location
Freedom-- canon says Rel Mord was *founded* after the victory of The Battle of Fortnight's Length implying either the conflict either *HAD* to be nearby -- or, since it is not published, that it *can't* have been fought nearby since Rel Mord history would have recorded it!
