What is the point of Reputation Points?

I was hoping the remaster would fix this issue I've had with the adventure path but I've just received my book and as far as I can tell it doesn't.

I understand the reputation subsystem represents the general feeling of the two town factions towards the NPCs, and affects social DCs and earn income checks. The table on p13 of the new book could make clearer that once you reach 'Liked' then only moderate or major (2 point +) favours should count towards increasing it further (according to the GM Core), but that's not my question.

Page 94 has a text box that says:
"Reputation, along with any Preparation Points the PCs accumulate (see Preparing for Winter on page 93) will ultimately help determine how the people of Willowshore fare in the third act of Season of Ghosts."

But in Act 3 there's very little detail about reputation points, only that they can be lost in a number of ways, including when there are no Hope points left. Is that it...? I was expecting something more significant to do with the ritual outcome or something like that, but reputation points are completely forgotten about by Act 4. Is all that work tracking them really just for an earning income and social DC modifier?
