Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, wife found dead in Santa Fe home
Very sad to hear that he, his wife, and dog were all found dead. He was a legendary actor. Rest in Peace
Autopsy results are done. I am spoiling the reconstruction due to disturbing details.
The couple go to the vet to pick up one of their three dogs, bringing it home in a crate, stopping on the way to get dog food.
They get home, Betsy goes to the bathroom and brings the dog in its crate with her. She goes to take some of her pills and dies from hantavirus-related respiratory failure.
Hackman lives for another week in the house with her corpse and a dog starving in its crate. Due to his Alzheimer's, it's unclear whether he was aware of Betsy's death or was aware but unable to cope with it. He did not apparently eat for that week but was not dehydrated. He then died of heart failure (possibly not taking medication due to Alzheimer's). Their other two dogs were free to move about and left the house via the doggy door.
