[SnS] Modifying the damage of Blood Hag outside of the check.

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Rise of the Runelords has monsters that are able to deal damage to players who are not attempting a check to defeat against them (such as Warden of Thunder, Galenmir, Teraktinus). They also have some other power, that modify how the damage is dealt (for example, all the above monsters deal damage to all characters at the location).

However, the authors forgot to add words "during the check" to the damaging powers of such creature. The intention was the powers that modify how damage is done only work when the creature is dealing damage during the check.

They later added an errata for such cards in RotR FAQ. For example

Warden of Thunder wrote:
Damage dealt by the Warden of Thunder during the check is dealt to each character at this location.

--------------------

In the Skull and Shackles set, there is another creature (Blood Hag) that has a way to deal damage to players who are not encountering it:

Blood Hag wrote:
If defeated, the Blood Hag deals 3 Fire damage to each character at your location.

and it also has a power that modifies the way the damage is dealt:

Blood Hag wrote:
When you are dealt damage by the Blood Hag, you must first choose allies to discard as your damage, if you have any.

But there is no errata in the SnS FAQ for this card. Have they forgotten to add the errata? Should this card also say "When you are dealt damage by the Blood Hag during the check, you must first choose allies to discard as your damage, if you have any"?

They did not forget the errata because the card is worded as intended. Just because something applied in RotR doesn't mean that's the only way it can be applied moving forwards; later sets introduced additional mechanics and additional things that can spread around the party.

Blood Hag hurts everyone if defeated and goes after the party's allies first. This happens outside of the check (indeed a card is never "defeated" or "undefeated" during a check, because determining its defeated status is a later step of the encounter).
