Dark Suns Sorcer-King

Conversions

I know a direct copy isn't possible. But I'm curious if anyone has any good build ideas for a Sorcer-king like character.

Sorcer-kings in Dark Suns are psychic/wizards that attained a dragon like form, and ruled over city states.

I think I remember an old dragon magazine had a conversion to 3.5, but can't remember the issue, and would like an even further update to 3.P.

Thanks all!

The way I would do it would be a mythic gestalt sorcerer/oracle. On the sorcerer side of the gestalt take 10 levels of dragon disciple. Take the mythic path ability longevity and divine source. You could use another class besides oracle. A sorcerer king would have to be at least tier 3 but probably higher.

I honestly didn’t consider either gestalt or mythic, but that seems obvious now, thank you!

Dragon #339 (cover date: January 2006) has the 3.5 Athasian Dragon (i.e., Dragon King) epic prestige class on pp. 22-25.

The prestige class offers 6/10 advancement of either arcane or manifester spellcasting.

I rarely use the material from occult adventures, but it looks like a Psychic may be a better choice than Oracle. Use 4 feats for favored prestige class and prestigious caster to make up for the loss of caster levels from dragon disciple. Longevity will allow you to ignore the penalties from age effects, so you can gain 3 points on each mental stat. I recommend using the ABP rules to boost the stats. A sorcerer king is going to need to be at least 3rd tier to be able to grant spells, but that only allow his follow to cast spells equal to his mythic tier. Mythic Paragon will boost that by 2.

Wow…that is actually one of the first issues I ever got! What a pull! Thank you. I’ll have to dig those out.

What about the psychic bloodline, instead of the psychic class?

And why oracle gestalt? Is that just to have mo’powa?

What about a pre-epic/mythic build? Like a nascent sorcerer-king, how would you guys design that?

In Darksuns the sorcerer kings were trying to become dragons. Dragon Disciple fits that and gives some decent physical boost. If you are not looking to follow that than skipping Dragon Disciple and taking another bloodline would work.

Oracle uses the same casting stat as Sorcerer, so has a lot of synergy. The Sorcerer Kings also grant divine spells so it seems fitting they should be able to cast them. Oracles revelations add a lot of flavor and would allow you to create some interesting theme based creatures. As I mentioned I rarely use occult adventures so when I think of two different casting types I usually think in terms of arcane and divine.

I have been playing around with using mythic gestalt characters to create demi-gods. I wanted something that was capable of being the ultimate BBG, but less than a full deity.

Ah ya I mean, cross blooded to keep the dragon requirements.

So far I have a cross blooded psychic/dragon sorcerer into dragon disciple, mixed with an Oracle.

I’ve never messed with mythic, that’s something I’ll have to look into.

Shame dragon disciple is such a hold over from 3.5, the class had more to offer sorcerers. Can’t think of another single-bloodline specific, or sorcerer in general, PrC off the top of my head, this one could’ve done more with bloodlines, really leaning into the magical nature of dragons as a whole: Advancing bloodlines like an arcanist, or 1/2 level progression like oracle curses….dunno. Not a fully formed idea. Maybe…also not requiring sorcerers/bloodragers to have the dragon bloodline, as no other arcane spontaneous caster has that requirement for entry. Have draconic themes that would fit the majority of bloodlines, advancing those bloodline abilities as well as giving dragon stuff.

There also seem to be very few template-style PrC’s, whereby the player acquires a new type, but these seem on theme and might be something to look into. What other classes change your creature type or give you so many physical changes?

Anywho, all that was off-topic a little, but maybe fodder for recreating an Athasian Dragon PrC? Since each sorcerer-king “dragon” was a pretty unique creature, with its own style of ruler ship and focus, this might be a cool route to take.
