Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

I’d heard this was pretty good, and considering it was James Gunn, I thought I’d give it a shot. Surprisingly, I was not disappointed.

The story was simple, fun, and cute. The cast was, as expected, great. Lots more focus on Mantis, which was cool. Cosmo the space dog was fun, and even had a “Russian” accent. The gift giving part was really nice. And the flashback to Peter’s earlier years with Yondu was cool.

I don’t recall if Mantis and Peter are related in the comics, but they made them siblings here. That’s a little weird, since Ego killed most of his other children. I assume he had a reason for keeping her alive. It makes me wonder, however, if they’ll try to bring more siblings into the franchise in the future.

If it has a future, that is. With Gunn being over at DC now, I don’t know what they’d do beyond the next movie. I’d hate to see what kind of damage Disney would do to the GotG franchise without Gunn.

Quill and Mantis aren't related since they have completely different parentage in the comics. Not even closely.

I'm still confident in the future of the MCU. Even with Gunn doing more DC stuff.

It was fun, and I enjoyed it. I hope one off specials like this are a way we can get more low-stakes just fun stories in the MCU.

As for the future of GotG, it sounds like quite a few of the current roster will be done with the third movie: Gamora, Rocket, and Drax, so they'll have to re-shuffle who's even in the GotG going forward, which is actually a great time to also change directors, rather than have a new director try to continue what Gunn set up for many of the characters.

Same here. I’ve enjoyed the two they’ve done so far. Other than Spider-Man: No Way Home, they’ve been the best things since Endgame.
