Spoiler free: Working with Academia - Downtime and Classes for players

Strength of Thousands

I'm currently a player early in book 2 who just hit level 4. I know there are other threads about this, but they are made by GMs and should be free to use spoilers. I was hoping to hear how other people had handled downtime without spoiling the plot.

My GM gives us 3 free blocks of time a week that aren't taken up by regular classes. They take about 4 hours each and can be used for social activities, the studying and cramming activities, or basic downtime like Earning Income. Being able to study that frequently strikes me as overly generous-- failure only sets you back less than a week and this campaign takes years. (Though depending on how quickly the events happen, maybe being off a week or two can impact whether you get to use your extra feats and stuff for the actual adventuring.)

So I'm curious how other people have used or experienced the passage of time. A campaign this long should allow for activities like Crafting items and retraining, but I'm not sure how much in practice. And how long do you make a studying activity take?
