Just started with starfinder: Witchwarper: Wisp Ally spell.
OK the text reads that I produce a blob of light which I can sic on a target (no saving throw, no SR) in (short) range. From text: "This wisp can move 60 feet per round in any direction, and you can direct it as a move action on your turn. If the wisp occupies the same space as an enemy, the wisp provides your choice of either harrying fire or covering fire (see pages 246–247) against the enemy each round on your turn, and it follows that enemy within range automatically unless you direct it to change targets."
Questions: (1) "follows the enemy within range" If the enemy (or the caster) moves out of the initial spell range does the wisp persist and continue to follow him? Does it hold up at the border of the spell range as the enemy moves out? Or does it wink out? If if does wink out will it reinstate itself if the enemy becomes back within range (and the spell duration hasn't expired). (my interpretation is that it follows the enemy, staying with it if the movement is less than 60' in the round, independent of the location of the spell caster).
(2) If you want to move the wisp to another place via a move action, must that target be within the range of your then current position? Or does both the target, and the then current position of the Wisp have to both be within range? (My interpretation: that short range applies only to the location of the instantiation of the Wisp. The psychic/arcane bond between the caster and wisp, once established is essentially unlimited, subject to the wisp maximum speed of 60' (and probably shifting to any new targets (either an enemy or a particular physical location) would have to be in sight of the caster at the time of their designation).
(3) The wisp provides harrying/covering fire: The rules for that are written for H/C fire are clearly written for the case of someone taking a single shot at the target (against a fixed AC 15), and state that the effect applies to the single NEXT attack (by any ally of yours -- harrying) or the single NEXT attack by the enemy against a designated ally (covering), either occurring within one round of the harrying/covering action. For the WISP you need to designate harrying or covering.
(3a) Is the choice of harrying vs. covering fixed for all the rounds of the wisps existence? Or could it be changed? (Again does it have to be in range of the caster in order to make such a choice?)
(3b) If covering fire, are you allowed to change the ally being covered? When? Does the Wisp need to be in range if you do so (assuming it persists out of range, see above).
(3c) OR is my interpretation correct: The Wisp is providing CONTINUOUS action against the target to provide harrying or covering (though in truth I'm not sure how the behavior for the Wisp would change to produce the different result). There is no need of any action against an AC 15 (as with a shot), it is just happening. So, I would state that the effect applies to ANY and EVERY attack against the target by allys (if harrying) while the wisp is on the target. Also, if covering it should apply to ANY and EVERY attack of the enemy (and I would maintain against any ally, but I guess you might make a case for for some sort of specificity in the wisp actions).
Honestly, if this all supposed to be the effect of some unshieldable glowing blob zooming around my field of vision I think that reasonably it would apply to BOTH my ability to defend myself (harrying) or attack against any and all targets (including called shots on environmental items) (covering) so long as its doing its thing.
But this is an RPG, so the rules might not be reasonable. Someone please help.
