Character Add-on Q...

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hi,

I've bought the Base game Rise of the runelords and all character add-on expansions.

Q : Why are the stats of the base character cards a little different than the ones in the add-on? (with same name for example Harsk)

Q : How or when do i choose the correct card ? Harsk core set or add-on?

Q : My add-on characters have a letter B in the upper right, is that correct? (I read on the internet that there should be letter C on it...)

thank you all for your time,

greetzzz,

C.

There are three different deck types that you're talking about. The first are the character versions that come in the AP, and these will have the "B" in the top right corner. The second are the character versions that come in the character add-on decks for each of the APs, and these will have the "C" in the top right corner. Note that the characters in an AP's base set and its character add-on deck aren't duplicated - there are 11 unique characters for an AP when the 7 in the base set and 4 in the character add-on deck are combined (and some APs also had promo characters marked with a "P" in the top right corner). The third type of deck that you're talking about is the class deck/character deck/ultimate add-on deck, and these will have the "B" in the top right corner. Each of the class/character/ultimate add-on decks included version of the iconic characters for the class(es) they covered, with the exceptions of the Goblins (Burn! and Fight!) and the Pathfinder Tales decks. Since the first three APs only used iconic characters, you'll see duplication of those characters across APs and class/character/ultimate add-on decks. In addition, you may find two or three other characters from the same class, each very different from the iconic characters in that class/character deck (the ultimate add-on decks only included one character).

The different versions of the characters are all the same character, re-imagined each time. They're variations on a theme. For example, there are three different versions of Ezren in the legacy sets: Rise of the Runelords AP, Wizard Class Deck, and Mummy's Mask AP. Each of these versions has the character card and the role card, associated with each other by the deck indicator in the top left corner (i.e., the Rise of the Runelords logo, the Wizard Class Deck logo, or the Mummy's Mask logo). The character card and corresponding role card may only be used with each other - you can't mix and match the character cards and role cards. The versions in the adventure paths typically have one of their roles well suited to the challenges of the AP in terms of powers and theme, with the other role being a bit more general in nature. The version and roles in the class decks, meanwhile, are generic explorations of other themes.

You may use any version of the character (character & role card) in any AP/OP season that you want, using both the whole way through the AP/OP season.

First intro game was a succes!

But now i have another Q...

We want to start an adventure. At all the cards, from items to henchmen, are numbers in the upper right corner. I read in rulebook that when we make our own deck, we should start with all "basic" marked cards.

When can/may/must we use the cards with letters B to numbers 6 in our deck OR the created decks for the scenario's like monsters, barriers,...?

I understand that when you succesfully complete an scenario you receive a reward and at the end you must take all the cards back into your deck from discard pile, hand, cardpile, buried pile but cards who were banished are gone...So you can remake your deck by adding new cards in it?

Thank you all for your time,

Christophe

Glad you are enjoying PACG!

The first adventure of Rise of the Runelords is the B adventure, Perils of the Lost Coast; the first scenario of that adventure is Brigandoom!. I assume that's the one you will be playing.

To build your character's starting deck, the rules are:
(1) You can only use cards which have the "B" or "C" adventure deck 'number'; and,
(2) You can only use cards with the 'Basic' trait (or, if you happen to have a B,C or P card marked 'Owner:<your character's name', you could use that, but no such cards appear in RotR itself); and,
(3) The mix of cards in your deck must match the count and type of cards listed on the back of your character's character card (for example, Harsk starts with 5 weapons, no spells, 1 armor, 3 items, 1 ally and 5 blessings).

To build the location decks when playing the B scenarios, you take all the monsters with the B adventure deck 'number' (and also the C adventure deck 'number', if you happen to have the Character Add-On deck), shuffle those, and randomly select (face-down) the number of monsters indicated by each location type. The same for each card type. You won't use the adventure deck 1 cards until you play the first adventure deck 1 scenario (Attack on Sandpoint). When you play that scenario, you shuffle all the AD1 cards of each type with the 'B' and 'C' cards of that type before building the locations. And so on.

You are correct about rebuilding your deck: you can use any boons the party acquired during the scenario (whether or not you banished cards - you can replace cards you started the scenario with by using boons the party acquired during the scenario or as rewards). Your rebuilt deck must match the card type and count list on the back of your character card (as modified by any card feats your character earns). If your party lacks enough cards of a given type for a character to make a complete deck, you can go to the box and select a card of that type (but you have to choose a Basic card, until you are playing Adventure 3; after that you can pull any card with an adventure deck 2 or more lower, meaning in adventure 3 you can pull an AD1 card, in adventure 4 you can pull an AD2 card, etc.)
