Adventure Path Metaplots

While part of the genius of the writing and design of these APs is that they are meta-plot light so you can pick up any AP and enjoy it fully without having to buy others, I personally LOVE those meta callbacks, or those moments of frustration when a PC from CoT, say, finishes HV and shakes her fists at the uncaring heavens... it’s such a nice payoff for seasoned campaigners.

So my question to the seasoned members of this forum, what are the metaplots you have found?

Rise-Shattered-Return, sure, but there’s also:

Rise-Curse-Darkness-Carrion-Shattered-Wrath-Return-Tyrant

Council-Rebels-Vengeance

What else you got?

And which are the three APs most INDEPENDENT of metaplot?

Council-Rebels-Vengeance

You can get more expansive with this one:

Council of Thieves => Serpent's Skull => Skull and Shackles => Hell's Rebels/Hell's Vengeance => Age of Ashes

Can you elaborate ? Is this because skull and shackles has the chellish navy in it? And where does serpents skull fit ?

Anything with a Vancaskerkin.

Ooh! Thanks fellow-traveler: I'm fascinated. Can you talk about what you perceive as the connective tissue? Is it related to Aroden as mortal?

So Matrix, that'd be Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne, Second Darkness, Shattered Star, Hell's Rebels, then Return of the Runelords?

Interesting saga.

And Hell's Rebels does not. The Vancaskerkin presented in A Song of Silver is supposed to be used in Giantslayer.

Council of Thieves deals with unrest in the Chelaxian City of Westcrown, which...has problems.

Serpent's Skull....dunno.

Skull and Shackles culminates with the Chelaxian Navy utterly failing to invade the Shackles and losing a ton of ships.

Hell's Rebels/Vengeance deal with a civil war in Cheliax. Paladin Army takes over Westcrown (Where Council of Thieves took place) and its implied, I think, that the weakened Chelaxian Navy because of the failed Shackles plot is helpful to the Paladins. Hell's Rebels is largely uninvolved except that it also takes place at the same time and the rebellion is successful in separating Ravounel from Cheliax. There's also a Chelaxian Navy ship captain in Rebels that can become a close ally of the PCs.

Age of Ashes brings the PCs to Ravounel once more a few years free and dealing with...stuff.

If you're interested in the political revolution of Cheliax, then its a neat arc.

If you're interested in Aroden as a mortal, you'd probably be best served by Ruins of Azlant (for a bit of history and culture) > Tyrant's Grasp (To find out Aroden is a bit of a jerk) > Extinction Curse (No, he's actually a big jerk).

Has more to do with the background for Vidrian than with Cheliax directly, but given that Sargava was a Chelish colony and that its elite considered themselves Chelish (albeit not subjects to the crown in Egorian), it fits well enough to my mind.

That makes sense. I thought it might be something like that, but I've never read that AP.

Ok, I roffled, thanks. I actually love this trilogy idea, and I just got Azlant, so thanks for that also!

Thanks for that catch.

So RotRL, CotCT, SD, SS, GS, RRL, then AoE.

Even weirder.

Oh hey, I love these kinds of threads! In fact I think I might have posted something akin to this subject before...

There are a lot of great continuity nods, though what I listed only covers the big main plot links I could find. Naturally since then Age of Ashes has joined the Cheliax Continuity (and I agree with the earlier discussion making a case for including Serpent's Skull and Skulls and Shackles). The Aroden continuity is one I didn't think about but is really neat! You know, there could also be one for Norgorber in a similar vein... There are loads of APs that dig into his lore, with Hell's Rebels and War for the Crown in particular each offering pretty big reveals.

So, to answer the other question about standalone APs, let's see what we have left...
1. Legacy of Fire: I could have sworn I saw it referenced somewhere, but I can't remember where now... Might have just been in a Lost Omens world book or something.
2. Kingmaker: I guess you could make a case that Strange Aeons could be linked via the boat ride through the Riverlands but otherwise I don't know of any links this AP has.
3. Mummy's Mask: I think this one might tie into several modules or society scenarios, but no other APs as far as I'm aware.
4. Iron Gods: Setting aside the massive link to Starfinder, of course.
5. Giantslayer: Not to my knowledge anyway, though I've never read it thoroughly.
6. Ironfang Invasion: Given how significantly this one altered the political landscape I imagine they'll have to have some continuation to it eventually. Maybe a pro goblin-themed AP... But for now it's only got some loose ties to some modules and scenarios to my knowledge.
7. Ruins of Azlant: though the Aroden Continuity picks this one up.
8. Extinction Curse: Yep that goes into the Aroden pile too.
9. Agents of Edgewatch: So far anyway, not counting the Vancaskerkin mention...

Seems like it's mainly the forest/dungeon crawl APs left. Makes sense that they would be the most self contained I guess.

I look forward to seeing what else gets dug up!

It does occur to me that Wrath of the Righteous also careens off Aroden in a fashion. You meet Iomedae, who directly benefited from Aroden's passing (We aren't sure how she feels about that.) You also fight someone who had a personal beef with Aroden, Deskari. And the Worldwound opened on the day he died (or around that.) So its Aroden Adjacent.

Giantslayer takes place near the Mindspin Mountains for a large portion of it, which is near Nirmithas, so Ironfang and Giantslayer form a duology of Monstrous Armies in a localized region.

Mummy's Mask involves an ancient undead coming to life and terrorizing the countryside. You could tie that into Carrion Crown and Tyrant's Grasp in a 'Night of the Living Dead' themed trilogy. That's only thematically not in a meta plot sense. The Esoteric Order of the Palantine Eye from Carrion Crown does have a Osirionologist as a big NPC, and you could add a Whispering Way cult to Mummy's Mask, but we're doing a bit too much work to squeeze it in.

There are minor connections to Xotani in Age of Ashes.

One could play up Castruccio Irovetti in Kingmaker having a couple of bits of Numerian tech to hand.

While it is not mentioned anywhere in the text, it seems to me that a group of giants intending to go on a rampage of conquest and destruction pretty much have to be in some ways influenced by large numbers of giants being dominated by rune giants in the service of a human wizard a few years earlier.

Liberty's Edge

Norgorber's followers seem to appear in a good number of APs.
