Also would work for a home brew race! A lot of possibility for backstory and games about what they are... Here goes nothing!
Voidborne
+2 con +2 int, +2 dex, -4 str
Hit points: 5
Size: Medium Humanoid
Nebula's Kiss: Voidborne don’t need to breath or eat and have a 30 foot fly speed in space (40 foot in nebulae and 60 foot in their home nebula)
Ion Storm: The Voidborne have the unnatural ability to control, summon, and start nebula storms (even in non-nebula space). You can use this ability in three ways: In spaceship fights, you may choose to do an extra 1d4-1 damage to hull damage every round (ignoring shields). In a standard fight, you can summon a bolt of electricity from above that does 1d8 per level until level 10 plus your int modifier (as long as you’re above ground and on a celestial body). Targets can make a reflex check for half damage, and on a crit fail the target is deaf, blind and staggered for 1 round. You can also use this ability to call away nebula storms.
Anti-grav adapted: Hundreds of years of living in a thrashing nebula has required the Voidborne to adapt almost exclusively to the tortuous living conditions of an active nebula. They are quick, smart, and resilient but not adapted to gravity, making them significantly weaker. They start with a -4 strength score, and no points can be invested in strength at first level.
Void sense: All voidborne start blind and deaf. They have limited telepathy, blindsight vibration, and thought all for 60 feet. Their sense of vibration is also fine enough for them to generally understand what other people are saying. They also have a connection to technology and can understand it even without visuals. This means that all of there technologies developed differently (e.g. for what we would call a comm unit, they have what resembles a small metal box that vibrates with what the person on the other end is internally inputting)
Societal description
Physical Description - The Voidborn don’t have eyes, a nose, a mouth, or any other facial features, making them slightly off putting to those who are not used to being around them. They are mostly humanoid (apart from the 8 foot tall stature on average) and purple or blue in colour. Some Voidborne have external features made of stars and nebula dust (e.g. wings, a halo or an extra set of arms). Ironically, this race didn’t even know about this until told by other people's since they don’t cause vibrations. These external features do not aid them in combat and are merely decorative.
Home World - The Voidborne Don’t have a home planet, instead living on a sort of archipelago of asteroids and space stations in the middle of a large, particularly active nebula. This is known as the ‘breathing nebula’ for how it seems alive and reactive to the presence of life (In that it will seem to target any non-Voidborne, intelligent creatures with particularly violent storms). The home language of the system is known as Nebulan and is an telepathy exclusive language and mostly involves the transmission of 'blindsight pictures’, thus making it staggeringly difficult language to learn for those who don’t have blindsight, and can cause sickness or confusion for those trying to hear them fully.
Society and alignment - The Voidborn are an incredibly cooperative race. Their collective goal, after leaving the nebula is the pursuit of knowledge. It has been theorized whether they can actually communicate with the nebula or whether it gives them a sort of hive-mind type communication from what has been noted about their race, however none of them has ever been documented saying anything about this. They have 2 genders, but they don’t see any difference between them besides the physical. The Voidborne are all lawful good to true neutral when in their home nebula, however they become the full range of alignments when outside of the nebula.
Relations - Generally, the Voidborne are cooperative with other species, even though they are generally quiet for the first hour or so when meeting new people. They also tend to talk and communicate less with others who don’t communicate telepathically, however befriending them is a fairly large boon, as they are a very smart race and share their knowledge with people they like.
Adventurers - Voidborne adventurers are a very good thing to have in your party. They exclusively seek knowledge and care little for the material, meaning you can often undercut them with the promise of them getting information. They are also usually very intelligent and powerful with their ability to control nebulae and their storms. It is highly recommended to bring a voidborn with you if you are ever exploring a nebula.
Names - Voidborn names are, similar to their language, often blindsight pictures. They choose names when joining the society (as this is almost the only reason for needing a name when they leave the breathing nebula). There names generally use the ZI (X) or EX (also X) sound (e.g. Xion, Xero, or Xro [ex-ro]), however this is by no means universal.
